HarborMaster Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 I dont know if this clears any of it up or not but..., FOX news ran extensive reports last year about a "Gay Day " at the Florida park which offended its nieghbors., and apparently Disney makes alot of porno. If this is not true., I am certain Disney would have sued FOX........, they did not., and FOX ran this for a few weeks on prime time. As I have always said., Disney is about making money., pure and simple., its not a magic kingdom or anything like that., it is simply trying to make bank any way it can. If Cinderella sister was a man., and others were kicked out., It was biased and kept in the closet., and they wanted to watch out for their "Image" and they still do., even tho they are into many things other than childrens entertainment. The topic here is "Gay Pirates ? Sounds Interesting? No-one here seemed to answer this topic squarely., or took a straight forward response to address the question., mostly a bunch of dancing., except of course from Lady Barbosa., she seems to be the only one who did not actually avoid the question. "Gay Pirates ? Sounds Interesting? For you probably it does "Sound Interesting" or you would not have brought it up., am I right? For me I recognise the gay community wasnt prominent aboard late 17th century and early 18th century shipping. probably it would have been very secretive when on a rare occasion something might have happened. It this thread is just to pose the question., is it interesting..., well since there were not many women involved in piracy., we would have to assume you are refering to men. To answer the original question. No I would NOT find it interesting to see for example Edward Teach taking Stede Bonnet's temperature., while Bartholomew Roberts was counting the Korne in Jack Rackhams Poo-Poo. Did I get it right., Did I answer the question., "Do I find it interesting" ? No I do not. Actually I find these mental images., depressing., degrading., and sic? I imagine there may have been a few incidents that no-one has heard about..., and I can also imagine a few were killed..., and that was the end of it. Society today is more tolerant of such debauchery. I am not Lost .,I am Exploring. "If you give a man a fire, he will be warm for a night, if you set a man on fire, he will be warm for the rest of his life!"
Merrydeath Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 I havn't posted on this yet, but I imagine that sex on ships was about the same as sex in prisons.. and there is more than one story about females being taken aboard ships against their will. I can imagine that young men would be in the same predicament. I googled these sites, that talk about homosexuality on pirate ships.. but I would remind any who think that Religous men were not homosexual, that King James I was an obvious 'lover of men', despite children from his wife. He had something to do with the King James bible I believe.. ................................................................................ ................................ also this article-- This week, Newsweek ran a cover story on Pirates of the Caribbean 2 star Johnny Depp — with the contextually-Freudian cover line "The Pirate in Johnny Depp" — in which producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed the studio's trepidation about Depp's depiction of Captain Jack before the first Pirates: Jack Sparrow was initially conceived as a young Burt Lancaster, Depp had re-imagined him as a debauched, vain, slightly fey rock star, inspired by Rolling Stones icon Keith Richards and cartoon skunk Pepe Le Pew. "The studio was, like, 'Is he gay? Is he drunk? We don't know what he's doing!'" says producer Bruckheimer. "It took a little while to calm everybody down." Said director John Waters: "It's the closest part he's ever played to his real self, but the fact that he played it kind of nelly was a big risk." Pause. "If only real gay pirates were that much fun." ............................................................................... http://www.alienperspective.com/Gay%20Pira...e%20Article.pdf http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/081471236...glance&n=283155 http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_..._5/ai_n14931149 and this really ornate shirt for gay pride, that takes some liberties with history. http://www.cafepress.com/maryranneb Pirate Lass with sass, brass, a cutlass, an a nice *ss. Iron Bess Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 All this aside I 'd like to point out that Disney Studios was the first major Studio to openly and without pause offer insurance coverage to their employee's gay partners if they were living at the same address. Many other places still don't. We openly support, sponser and advertise a Gay Day at our theme parks. If non-Gays come to the gates and are offended they are encouraged not to go in. It may be rare... but we are not always all about the money. Time marches on I suppose... Well, you may not realize it but your looking at the remains of what was once a very handsome woman!
Red Maria Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 If you want historical openly gay pirate look no further than Robert Culiford the bane of Capt. Kidd's existance. He even had a partner named John Swann who was called his Great Consort (or was that Grand Consort ). Took half of Kidd's crew away from him too. :)
Christine Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 I know I'll be checking out Gay Day at Disneyland. Perhaps there'll be less strollers than usual. I know gay people have kids, but I'm just hoping it won't be a lot. Lately Disneyland is becoming Strollerland, it's crazy and out of control. My mom got her foot run over 3 times when we were there last Saturday. And these people don't apologeize, they look pissed to be pushing a stroller thru a large crowd. Well, that's just tough, no one asked them to bring a stroller! My parents never used a stroller with me on my first visit, I was 3. They waited til I could walk on my own, if I got tired they just simply picked me up. Made it easier to get thru the crowd. The majority of the reason for strollers is because parents are taking little babies. I've seen some that look like newborns. There were quite a few babies waiting in line for rides like Pirates and Haunted Mansion, that's just way too young. Poor kid doesn't even know what the hell is going on!
Dusi Sparrow Posted July 6, 2006 Author Posted July 6, 2006 I know what you're talking about Christine. Last year friends took their 1 year old son with them to the faire, because she was still breastfeeding him. Looked like this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v343/Tim...ie/Satzvey4.jpg
Christine Posted July 6, 2006 Posted July 6, 2006 Other than the fact the baby won't understand what's going on and the parents will be tied down, they're subjecting their child to a lot of germs. This is why I'm so surprised to see a lot of babies in large crowds. Lots of people, lots of germs, not good to have a baby around that, but what do I know right? I'm not a mother......

The Doctor Posted July 8, 2006 Posted July 8, 2006 I hate those carpet-commando carriages! They're almost as big as my SUV, and carry as much junk! Don't get me wrong; I love kiddies, if prepared properly. Especially with mint sauce or a nice peppercorn bernaisse. Yo ho ho! Or does nobody actually say that?
Bloody_Mary_Bonney Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 I most certianly agree with you!!! It's total stroller-hell there!!!! oh yeah alomst had my knee taken out by the one the size of a monster truck. Never sit on a railing.... when they go by they aim for you.... My name is Micheal J Kabous and i eat babies! Your toast has been burned and no amount of scraping will remove the black stuff
Hester Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Naw, I can't see Jack being gay or even bi-curious. He's always busy with the ladies, which is why they're always slapping him, pissed he loves them and leaves them. I actually think of Jack as omni-sexual, ready to shag any convenient warm body that smells better than he does -- be that Elizabeth Swann, the working women of Tortuga, Tia Dalma, a passing mermaid (or was that a dolphin?), Will, Norrington [i'm rooting for you, mate!], or Norrington's goat. Cheers, Hester
Sea Sage Posted October 10, 2006 Posted October 10, 2006 I've been doin research for a possible pirate film, shyin away from POTC. Accordin to http://www.infopt.demon.co.uk/pirates.htm, thar was discussion of Ann Bonney and Mary Read being lover whilst members of Calico Jack's crew. It was also thought that Calico Jack was Captain Vane's Quartermaster and paramour. Also there was another pirate friend of Ann's named Pierre Bouspect aka: Pierre DElving, Peter Bosket, "Pierre the Pansy Pirate" Google list other possibilities as well. :)
Culliford Posted October 16, 2006 Posted October 16, 2006 If you want historical openly gay pirate look no further than Robert Culiford the bane of Capt. Kidd's existance. He even had a partner named John Swann who was called his Great Consort (or was that Grand Consort ). Took half of Kidd's crew away from him too. :) This is true according to the sources I've read... but that's not why I go by the name "Culliford" (in case anyone was trying to put two and two together...). I go by the name "Culliford" in some online pirate games I play, and it's interesting to me how this REAL pirate, the guy that did most of the things Kidd got blamed for, is so unknown and forgotten. He was ruthless, bloodthirsty, and yeah, probably on the gay side. He was also a very witty speaker, and was able to talk his way out of trouble on more than one occasion. (I was going to say he had a slippery tongue, but... well... double entendres and all...) I have no problem with people being involved in relationships with other people... whether they are same-sex or not. I have a few friends that have gone "both ways," and have relationships with people in general, and not with members of the opposite sex. It seems like a way to broaden the pool of perspective soulmates... but that's not for me. I looooooooooooove the ladies! As a historian, there's one thing that troubles me with quotes like "It's not in contemporary literature..." Social or cultural taboos are rarely in contemporary literature. Many times, the things that went on but against cultural mores were not discussed openly, and especially not in literature. To do so would be to call attention to oneself and the unacceptable behavior. I think that there was probably a lot more "deep sea lovin'" going on than we will ever know, although I'm certain that ships were not floating disco ships with crews on deck singing "YMCA."
Taemus MacRoegen Posted November 4, 2006 Posted November 4, 2006 Even more so in 'Dead Man's Chest'. He's already made a parody of himself by the second film! How limp-wristed will he be in the third? I'm almost ashamed to admit 'yeah, I'll go see it'. When are we gonna get a realistic, hardnosed pyrate flick? The Blackbeard saga would be a perfect op, just dripping with memorable scenes. Here's ta' swimmin' wit' loose limbed women.... Iffen ah'm drunk ta' tha' brink, do prop me up, me darlin'... But iffen ah'm anywhere near bein' sober ta' me gills, do buy me a drink!
Red Cat Jenny Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 Noo nooooooooooo!! NO gay pirates! agh! ::slapping head:: (nothing against being gay - I've had gay friends - Agh! don't spoil me fantasy! Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.... Her reputation was her livelihood. I'm a pirate, love. By nature and by choice! My inner voice sometimes has an accent! My wont? A delicious rip in time...
Kenneth Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 How come the village people didn't have a pirate? I'm offended! "Without caffine, I'd have no personality at all"
Red Cat Jenny Posted November 6, 2006 Posted November 6, 2006 They were land based? *snicker* Some days even my lucky rocketship underpants won't help.... Her reputation was her livelihood.
