What's your day job

If all goes according to plan, sometime in August I'll be working as an assistant to an underwater archaeologist, entering data into the RUST (Resources and UnderSea Threats) database.

The guy I'll be working with did his master's thesis on a magnetometer scan of Beaufort, looking for Blackbeard's other ship. Cool!

So are you a certified diver, Blackjohn?

"Am I not?"

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Coordinator. That's a nice fancy term for using a computer to make maps. So I do some Cartography, some data bashing, some teaching, some web design.

On the side I design t-shirts, do some chinese brush painting and sculpt.

Computer Network Administrator, ie I keep all the computers at my comapany running smoothly, plus I make sure all the employees can browse for porn while not doing their work.

Other then my day job, I do calligraphy and illuminiations on the side for fun nothing for sale and nothing I have done imho is worth scanning yet I am getting better. My big pipe dream project is to make a large map done with period inks and gesso.

(sorry to raise this thread from the depths of Davy Jones Locker...flog me if need be)

Every time I tell people I work in the IT industry, they want free help wih their home PCs. So now, I tell everyone I'm a piano player in a whorehouse. The conversation moves right on to something else very quickly. ;)

Yo ho ho! Or does nobody actually say that?

Mad Jack here is one on me mate ;)

Heck I do not tell people freely in public I am a IT guy heck my family thinks I work in an adult book store selling marital aids. ;)

When I was younger I always was the one they(family) called to fix a computer so when I was in college I thought up the Adult Book store job and have kept it going since. ;)

I did the IT thing for nineteen years; getting asked to fix stuff for free or give free diagnostic advice did get awfully old, but I discovered it was a useful skill to parlay into discounts on furniture, free chiropractic treatment, etc. I did it all: hardware tech, network engineer, applications developer, sys admin...

I have a semi-technical job, kinda sorta. I am a financial planning software support specialist, but the job mainly involves teaching, tech writing and giving advice to financial advisors.

So where do you work, what do you do besides pyracy.

The last time I worked - I haven't in over a year due to medical grounds although I've still got a job to go back to by all acounts - I was a quality controller working for a fruit importers over here in the UK.

Did mean I never got scurvy-ridden despite any foul rumours to the contrary! ;)

I'm a full time college student, which is job enough, and I work in the library archives, which is a great job, except for the whole minimum wage thing. Yuck. This summer I'm hoping to get back into archaeology, because it pays so much better, and it's outdoors! Best job I've ever had.

When people find out that I sew for a living, they want me to fix thier seat cusions...... or him thier pants.....

Ditto, Pat! I hate that! :D

Well, I don't really sew for a living. I keep a colony of elves adequately fed and watered and they sew for my living. I just tell them what to do. ;)

I run an Evil Empire (I mean, own my own business). Started as a hobby, became part time, and this spring I had to quit my day job (as a graphic designer) just to keep up with it.

Blackjohn, Huzzah! Congratulations! ;)
