Guest Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 The fiber glass resin job dinna come out like i wanted to. Dang... sorry to hear that..... but wot th' heck.... Yer goinna feel so much better when you get it fixed..... (or something like that....) Ain't that a large part of any project.... sometimes parts don't work, and ye gotta figure out how to fix them... but when ye do, ye feel so dang good about it........
oderlesseye Posted August 10, 2009 Author Posted August 10, 2009 (edited) I finished sanding the table down as much as I dared without taking the paint up and re-did the finish with an amber shalac. The Table is to my liking and the coins have even a bit more deeper definition due to the amber effect. The great thing about resin is that when it is re-applied, all the scratches from sanding (I went all the way to using 600 wet and dry) does not show up. It turns clear. eye am calling this my own personal Pirate lords table.. Eye decided to use the Disney image on the Tiki bar with a piece of Plexiglass over it. Aye So NoW Eye am ready for a dead mans party and you all can come on the 22nd of this month..If not ..hell I will have a swill of rum fer yas all in a toast.. Gotta go swab the deck now..Gotta clean up before guest arrive. I am excited.. This is the first party I be having here..we went all out fer it too. The Treasure chest is the next project as far as the cove is concerned. Mean while it has been converted into an ice chest for the party..Yarrr ~ Edited August 10, 2009 by oderlesseye http://www.myspace.com/oderlesseyehttp://www.facebook....esseye?ref=nameHangin at Execution dock awaits. Tavish Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 I wished I lived in the area near you. I used to work as an upholstery for a few yrs before the company bellied up and closed up. Id offer my services if youd buy the materials whether it be vinyl or leather and Id do it for a 12 pack of beer and you buy my lunches and Id do it just for the previledge to work on them to see how they were built. For Ive been wanting to build my own someday for my own place. Sorry After much haggling and shall Eye say lusting..I finally landed some barrel chairs in my area that i hooked up the trailer and picked up this week end...I won them On Ebay and got the Whole lot fer $285.00 . Not bad considering the price fer one chair originally went for as much a $375.00 .They're in prime condition however they will need to be reupholstered to my taste..Good bye 1970's retro and hello to a Piratey place to swill me rum wit friends! Yarrrr! I have already consulted one reupholstering place but will take my time to get this done while I shop fer a few more places to get a custom job, at a reasonable price... As for the table..i want to do something more rustic but again it all takes money..And I have to keep a weather eye on that ..My parent company ( Caterpillar) just laid off 20,000 people... Me Timbers be shivering! Nonetheless Oderlesseye be stoked at this moment! YArrrr!
Tavish Posted August 30, 2009 Posted August 30, 2009 What about bar top laquer the stuff that when dries become like 20 layers of varnish? just make sure when you use it rather using a brush as you found out has a habit of pulling out some of the bristles. use something like a if i can spell this right....a squeegie. can be an old credit card, stiff cardboard or a thin 1/8" plywood to help spread it more evenly and fast. just make sure that you have it leveled and if airbubbles start to form before it dries and hardens use a paperclip or needle to pop the bubbles. The fiber glass resin job dinna come out like i wanted to. Eye am in dispair but not all is lost...I will have alot of sanding in front of me to make the table presentable..I had an epic fail with a paint brush and got bristles every where.. also the resin began setting too soon while still in application which left a ruff finish in a few spots.. Dang i was nervous and regret my choice to glass it rather than just use Valspar .
oderlesseye Posted August 30, 2009 Author Posted August 30, 2009 (edited) Tavish thank you for the tips and interest ~ The finish on the table is to my liking now.. As an after thought ..I did think the same as you mentioned when it comes to applying resin. I forgot about that technique at the time.. The table finish is not perfect but then again it is rustic because it is Not perfect and Piratey to boot.. So I more than met my objective with this piece. Many a compliment were given to me about the table at the party.. so it was a hit and a major improvement over the round barrel table..Which Eye still have as an extra table for events ect.
