Walking the Plank

I just happened to be looking for something else in the images from Charles Ellms' The Pirates Own Book (most, if not all, of which appear to have been modernized to the time of the book's initial printing in 1837.) While looking, I happened to come across the image below.

It basically fits in with Foxe's original comments about a couple examples being found in the 1820s. It is the frontispiece to the book. (Curiously, the act is never mentioned in the book's text that I can find. Also curiously, I never heard about anyone's head exploding when they performed this act. Or maybe that's supposed to be a cloud.)

Mycroft: "My brother has the brain of a scientist or a philosopher, yet he elects to be a detective. What might we deduce about his heart?"

John: "I don't know."

Mycroft: "Neither do I. But initially he wanted to be a pirate."

Eye have had fun with the plank as a gag at fairs..

Eye was playing the Girls Liars dice and lost

my wager.. My punishment was to walk the plank!

The real experience, was on the Wolf

during PIP 2009 Walk the plank contest. Alot of us here

on this web site jumped with the prompting of a cutlass.

The link to that is on this web site buried with other treasures.

Even though eye know it is not period

thar are some things eye like

for entertainment purposes.

The Plank is one of them. plank-1.jpg

Hangin at Execution dock awaits. May yer Life be a long and joyous adventure in gettin there!
As he was about to face the gallows there, the pirate is said to have tossed a sheaf of papers into the crowd, taunting his audience with these final words:

"My treasure to he who can understand."
