hello!

First post here. I understand that asking for a British Military coat pattern on er.. well the oppositions board.. is a bit like flying the black flag of No Qarter.

But Im a huge fan of the Jack Aubrey books, as well as Hornblower, and have always wanted a Post Captians coat.

Anyone know of a good facimilie or close copy thereof? If not, id be interested in patterns etc...

Thanks,

David Hartman.

Ah dharman07....give you joy, my dear! May this be of aid to that of which you seek.

This vendor offers a pattern with variations of civilian and millitary top coats. I have never laid hands on this pattern mind, and adjustments may need be made for the outcome desired. Never the less, it appears to be a good foundation in which to work with.

This vendor should be able to provide you with the trappings that you would require to finish the coat out. They offer braiding, cloth and the buttons that would be appropriate.

I have made several RN officers' coats of that period (including a captain's undress coat). There was no set pattern for officers coats so they followed the civilian fashions of the time, with specific braid and buttons depending on rank. So, if you can get hold of a pattern for any coats of the right period it would do. The only things actually specified by Admiralty orders were whether the coat was single or double breasted (Captains' were double breasted),whether the collar was falling or standing, the colours and the braid and buttons. I believe I took a pattern from Norah Waugh's excellent "The Cut of Men's Clothes".

I also have in my possession an original pre-1812 Read-Admiral's coat so if you're planning to go for ultra-authenticity I'd be happy help with construction details.

I had mine made by a local civil war seamstress...I just gave her a picture of what I wanted and she did the rest. Might be cheaper than most other sources.
