blackjohn
I'm on my way out the door, so I'm cutting & pasting a conversation from the piratebrethren mail list... read the bottom part first... In my opinion (and I was once a Prussophile) that royal cypher looks more like FWR than FR. Frederick Wilhelm was Old Fritz' dad. Reigned from 1713-1740???In S&B there is a European hanger circa 1690-97 (#9.S) with a iron heart-shaped hilt, and an English hanger circa 1725-1740 (#11.S) with a brass one. They both look EXTREMELY similar to this sword. You want my opinion. Buy it. > Ok, so more pokin about on the web has turned up a better picture of the > "pirate hanger" from Windlass: > > https://www.reliks.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=1...&step=4&close=1 > > If I am not mistaken, that is Frederick the Great's scribles on that blade, > which dates it no earlier than 1740, right? (please chime in if you think > that is wrong and somehow it is ok for earlier) So, I guess I won't be using > it for 1717. Bah, specially since it looks awful nice, and gets good > reviews. Supposedly Windlass makes a different so-called 1742 pattern hanger > that is not so prussian, but i can't find it for sale. Monterey Jack
For authentic looks and the occasional waiving about I like the ones at Loyalist Arms, tho' I can't find the bloody link at the moment. For more functional ones Darkwood armory is working on some beauties that aren't listed on the site yet, and for heavy contact Popinjay's up in bangor Maine. happy hacking!
