Hand mortar for sale!

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of having a hand mortar built (its a kit from the Rifle Shoppe).

But Ben Coogle has one for sale that he hand built. Its $1300 and a beauty!

It will fire raquette balls.

I think its the "Predden" lock. The Rifle Shoppe carries them.

Can't wait to get mine. The Kit was about $800. Aparently, its not too difficult a job to put it all together (I bought a kit with a completed lock). I am just a little scared that i might F#$#@ the thing up.

I am going to wait until I have it (the kit) in my hands to see just how difficult it Looks.

Speaking of kits... here is a mighty fine Queen Anne kit from the UK

The lock looks like one of the pseudo miquelet locks that Dixie was selling a few years back. I picked one up but I haven't found the right piece for it yet.

I'm real tempted to get one of the barrels and mount it up with a matchlock. Somewhere around here I've got documentation for one of these things back to the late16th/early 17th C.

I've always wanted one, that's for sure, but I can't justify spending money on something like that until my blunderbuss gets put together (like another decade from now?).

I've seen reference to them as matchlocks too... and I seem to recall reading that my home state of Maryland had some "rocklock" versions in their arsenal in the late 1690s.

If you have never dealt with The Rifle Shoppe before, be prepared for a VERY long and frustrating wait.

I have had dealings with them on several occasions, because there is no other source for some of the things they have. I would not deal with them at all if there was another choice

You will find that they will absolutely not keep their word about delivery times, and seldom answer the phone or reply to e-mails. I don't mind waiting, but I hate being lied to, and I have made promises to customers based on what The Rifle Shoppe has told me about delivery dates, and been made to look foolish because they keep giving me bad information. If you are able to get them to answer the phone, they always tell you "It will be sent out next week", and several months later you MAY get delivery. However, they seem to be honest, and always eventually send the goods. (End of rant...)

You will find that your barrel maker, Ben Coogle is very good to deal with, and always keeps his word about delivery times. I can only say good things about dealings I have had with him. He is also very accomodating about special order requests.

Thats the real fkd' up thing about this whole hand mortar. I have always heard that the Rifle Shoppe takes forever. So, I thought, I got plenty of time and no money. I will order the gun, and maybe, when the parts are ready, I will have the money.

So I order the hand mortar back in October/November of 2004 (11 months ago) and back in May I got a call saying "its ready, pay us".

Needless to say my wife just about had a Aneurism when I told her I owed $820 + shipping on a hand mortar kit.

So, I have kind of been stalling since then, selling things on e-bay and making payments to TRS. I paid it off Aug 20 and got the barrel 2 weeks ago. Now I am waiting for the rest.

I figure, I got until next July to get it and get it together as I won't be back in the states for a gig until then.

Thanks for the heads up though.

I think a fusil boucannier from TRS will be next.
