CapnJake Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Speaking of "Northwest Passage" by the late Stan Rogers. It seems we're not particularly well known on this board, and I should make some effort to raise our flag. Bounding Main has been performing together since January of 2003. We've been singing maritime music at many venues in the Midwest US and have a quickly filling-up schedule for 2007. We have a version of "Northwest Passage" that seems to be well liked, based on our CD and digital sales on CD Baby. You can hear it played on our MySpace Page: http://www.myspace.com/boundingmain. Please also visit our "real" web site at Bounding Main Web Site. If you click through the images of our two CDs you can listen to previews of all of the songs there. We're working on our third, as yet unnamed, CD now. We'll be recording live at the Chicago Maritime Festival in February. I hope you can join us. Quartermaster James Posted December 8, 2006 Posted December 8, 2006 Tannahill Weavers The Final Trawl Now it's three lang years since we made her pay Heave away my laddie o And the owners say that she's had her day And sing haul away my laddie o So it's heave away for the final trawl Heave away my laddie o It's an easy pull for the catch is small And sing haul away my laddie o And we'll join the venture and the morning star Heave away my laddie o Riding high and empty before the bar And sing haul away my laddie o And I'd rather beach her on the skerry rock Heave away my laddie o Than see her torched in the breakers dock And sing haul away my laddie o And when I die you can lay me down Heave away my laddie o In a rusty hold where the breakers pound And sing haul away my laddie o For I've fished a lifetime boy and man Heave away my laddie o And the final trawl scarcely nets a cran And sing haul away my laddie o
Morgan Dreadlocke Posted December 9, 2006 Posted December 9, 2006 Iffin's ya could addlib some piraty lyrics to it, "Touch and Go", by Emerson Lake n Powell is a fine ditty. Rev.Sam Posted November 12, 2008 Posted November 12, 2008 I have a few Fathom th' Bowl Cape Cod girls Blood red roses
darkRose Posted November 19, 2008 Posted November 19, 2008 I see some recent posts in here so thought I would go back and read some of the old posts, it is funny as many good sea shanties as I have heard in the last few years, some always seem to always be around. But I thought I had a new favorite song of the sea and find that it is actually documented as older than most. If you get a chance to hear a version of "Go From My Window"...I think by just about anybody...give it a listen....the first I heard it was Pint and Dale, but it looks as though just about everybody has covered it... Mingulay, Sailors Prayer (both), and all the ones that are always sung.... just good Music..... dR The Enigmatic Rogue...and may always be

"I kissed her... once with passion... once with love... and told her good bye"
RustyNell Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 SO MANY!!! lets see Barretts Privateers thanks to Braze who introduced me to Stan Mrs. McGrath The Rolling Sea Lowlands Away A Dying Sailor see a trend here! I guess I like songs of lament. the only others I truly love are... well the ones that can only be done past 10pm in the pub. “PIRACY, n. DeadcrowIsland Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Here be a couple of tunes that've been seeing a lot of playtime lately "The Mariner's Revenge Song" by The Decemberists. Honestly one of my favourite tunes of all-time. "Crush A Man To Death" by Interrupt Vector vs. DJ Plague. One of the first speedcore tunes I ever listened to, and I still love it. Anything by DJ Plague is good with me, definately one of the better producers as far as hard electronic music goes. "A Merry Life To Savage Men Who Stand by Freedom's Right, Fuiling Rum To Arm Our Drive And Raid This Ship In Sight. YARRR!" -"Voyage" by Verbal Deception
Capt Thighbiter Posted April 12, 2009 Posted April 12, 2009 We, The Brigands , perform 'Mariners' in a piratey fashion and less Klesmer like, in concert, an it's on our new CD, "X", too. My personal favs are songs that tell a story, an I always try to do that when writing an original song. Non-secular songs of the period have some distictive chord structures, and we try to emulate that too. But being an instrumentalist first, and a singer second, I love the old fiddle tunes that are still around. Devils Dream, a reel, ( aka Hell Amoungst the Yearlings), one of my favs, was at the height of its popularity in the early 1700's, and survives today. Any fiddler worth 'is salt knows at least couple of variations on the tune. Our version is on "Bloody Seamen". Pirate music at it's best, from 1650 onwards The Brigands
LadyBrower Posted April 13, 2009 Posted April 13, 2009 "There's no such thing as free lunch, unless you're talkin' bout Captain Crunch!" That makes me giggle And I like some of the different versions of High Barbary ... particularly one I have on a mixed CD sung by a lady. 'tis pretty Cook and Seamstress to the Half Moon Marauders Lady Brower's Treasures, Clothing and other treasures Hell Hath No Fury like the Wrath of a Woman... No that's it. She doesn't need a reason. www.myspace.com/halfmoonmarauders www.myspace.com/faerienoodle

Capn Bob Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 Cape Cod Girls for me...altho I'm infamous for belting out Free Americay at work... Least Fave? Gotta be "Battle Hymn of the Republic"...and I'll tell ye why, below: Many long years ago, me aunt was a member of something called The Freiheit Club family's German speakers on the maternal side...on me father's side, we came from Brit-land in 1632), and was in their choral group. I can remember sitting in on their sessions, and they *always* ended with Battle Hymn. Now this was when I was 7, and fresh out of Virginia (we came to Ohio to be near family while me father was in Vietnam, 1964-1965)...I guess the teachers got to me at a very early age, because I was *ever* so tempted, even at such a tender age, to stand up and belt out at the top of me tiny little lungs, "Dixie". "Battle Hymn" has *never* been a fave of mine. I never did sing out Dixie. But now I come to think of it, I wonder what they'd have done if I "treated" them to a rendition of The Ballad of Captain Kidd (...To Execution Dock, I must go, I must go...) Damn, thats sharp!
Capt. Lazarus Gage Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 A very good year - Frank Sinatra Pirate's Gospel - Alela Diane Billy Bones - Skip Henderson Hurt - Johnny Cash etc....
RustyNell Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Ok my new favorite is one I just wrote .... ohhhhh well the "babies" are always my favorites for a while. I just put it up a couple of days ago on garageband to get some opinions... (I do that sometimes...just to get a feel for where it might benefit from some re-writes) ANYWAY....here's the link if ya wanna take a listen. BLACK THE MOON The Cappy asked me for a song about death and freedom...anyway its not what I expected... I can never craft these things they just kinda come out. This is a bedroom recording... LOL hope to have studio version on the next BIB album, along with a few more NEW songs. Hope it will be a favorite of some of yours. With love, Nell “PIRACY, n. Grymm Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 (edited) From a simple belting it out round a campfire song I do like a couple of Men They Couldn't Hang numbers both from the 1988, Waiting For Bonaparte cd. 'Smugglers' Not the best version I've seen them do but by'eck it's fun in the mosh pit.The boat rides south of Ailsa Craig in the waning of the light There's thirty men in Lendalfit to make our burden light And there's thirty horse in Hazleholm with the halters on their heads All set this night up on your life if wind and water speed Smugglers drink of the frenchmens wine and the darkest night is the smugglers time Away we ran from the excise man It's a smugglers life for me It's a smugglers life for me Oh lass you have a cozy bed, and cattle you have ten Can you not live a lawful life and live with lawful men? But must I use old homely goods while there's foreign gear so fine? Must I drink at the waterside and France so full of wine Smugglers drink of the frenchmens wine and the darkest night is the smugglers time Away we ran from the excise man It's a smugglers life for me It's a smugglers life for me Though well I like to see you Kate, with a baby on your knee My heart is now with gallant crew that plough through the angry sea The hitter gale, the tightest sail, and the sheltered bay or goal It's the wayward life, it's the smugglers strife, it's the joy of the smugglers soul Smugglers drink of the frenchmens wine and the darkest night is the smugglers time Away we ran from the excise man It's a smugglers life for me It's a smugglers life for me And when at last the dawn comes up and the cargo safely stored Like sinless saints to church we'll go. God's mercy to afford And It's champagne fine for communion wine and the parson drinks it too With a sly wink prays "forgive these men, for they know not what they do" Smugglers, drink of the frenchmens wine and the darkest night is the smugglers time Away we ran from the excise man It's a smugglers life for me It's a smugglers life for me It's a smugglers life for me It's a smugglers life for me And the Colours I am a member of the council of the naval mutiny And no traitor to my conscience having done my sworn duty These are my last words before the scaffold and I charge you all to hear How a wretched British sailor became a citizen mutineer Pressed into service to carry powder I was loyal to the crack of the whip It I starved on the streets of Bristol, I starved worse on a British ship Red is the colour of the new republic Blue is the colour of the sea White is the colour of my innocence Not surrender to your mercy I was woken from my misery by the words of Thomas Paine On my barren soil they fell like the sweetest drops of rain Red is the colour of the new republic Blue is the colour of the sea White is the colour of my innocence Not surrender to your mercy So in the spring of the year we took the fleet Every cask and cannon and compass sheet And we flew a Jacobin flag to give us heart While Pitt stood helpless we were waiting for Bonaparte Red is the colour of the new republic Blue is the colour of the sea White is the colour of my innocence Not surrender to your mercy All you soldiers, all you sailors, all you labourers of the land All you beggars, all you builders, all you come here to watch me hang To the masters we are the rabble, we are the 'swinish multitude' But we can re-arrange the colours of the red and the white and the blue Red is the colour of the new republic Blue is the colour of the sea White is the colour of my innocence Not surrender to your mercy Red is the colour of the new republic Blue is the colour of the sea White is the colour of my innocence Not surrender to your mercy Edited June 5, 2009 by Grymm Lambourne!
