Capn_Enigma
Sid Meier's Pirates!, the long awaited sequel to (or remake of) the classic Pirates! and Pirates! Gold has hit the stores this week. Has anyone here already played it? I am considering getting it and I' d like a few opinions. Although the graphics are stunning, the game seems to have remained much the same as last time around. "The floggings will continue until morale improves!" JoshuaRed
I've been playing it like mad for most of the week....it's amazing! The base gameplay is very much like the old Pirates, which in itself was about perfect. Sid said all along that he didn't want to mess with the original formula too much, but rather to update it for the 21st Century. Its definitely the most seamless, well done game I've played yet. Captain Charlotte Savvy
This is one of those games that I can't buy because I know I will do nothing else with the rest of my life but sit in front of my comp screen and play it. My gamer coworker and I were talking about it at work -- and it sounds definitely uber-cool. "Pirates ... were of that old breed of rover whose port lay always a little farther on, a little beyond the skyline ... if they lived riotously let it be urged in their favor that at least they lived." ~ John Masefield Those who live by the sword, get shot instead. Captain_MacNamara
I hear that you have to have a pretty much brand new computer just to be able to run it... what are the system requirements? Capn_Enigma
Sys requirements aren't really that high: - Operating System: Windows® 98/Me/2000/XP - Processor: Pentium® 1.0 GHz or higher - Memory: 256 MB RAM - Hard Disk Space: 1.2 GB Free - CD-ROM Drive: 4X Speed - Video: 64 MB video card with Hardware T&L support - Sound: Windows® 98/Me/2000/XP-compatible sound card - DirectX®: DirectX® version 9.0b (included) or higher "The floggings will continue until morale improves!" Bilgemunky
I've been spending my extended turkey weekend kicking myself. I pre-ordered Pirates! (so's I could get the special edition that comes with extra goodies and such,) but like a dunderhead I had it delivered to my office rather than a local store. So while everyone else that preordered has had a pirate-filled weekend, I've had to make due with drinking rum, hosting a pirate themed murder mystery party, and watching the Spongebob movie. Maybe the game will arrive soon, and next weekend will be a little more interesting I AM BILGEMUNKY
MajorChaos
I just picked up the game the other day. I thought it was going to be something like the Civilization games. It's not. I like it though. It's pretty fun. The game has lots of fun things, sword fights and ship battles and other things. The one thing I haven't gotten figured out yet is the dancing parts. It's not easy to follow the silly hand gestures that indicate which way to go. I love the animations of the ships exploding and some of the battles. So, far, one of the things I'm not happy with is the forced time off when you divide the plunder. they should give you the option whether or not you want to keep plundering or rest. Over all though, I really like it. I can see many hours of my life virtual pirating! Chaos, panic, pandemonium - my work here is done. Isabella
Dang, looks like I need an upgrade before I get this one. Why can't they just X Box some of these! I know not the same, but more friendly! If yer shopping for a new comp their selling an HP 2.93 Gig processor, with 533 front bus and 356 ram at Walmart for 468.00. 17 inch monitor included. I put mine on lay away and it'll get out just in time for me berfday. My 900 mhz is a great little comp, but it's needing to take a backseat for a new one. Cap'n Pete Straw
Purchased the game for my 13-year-old pirate-obsessed son for Christmas. I'll post an review when I find out what he thinks about it. ... or better yet, I'll have him register (I already know his Pirate name) and write it himself. "He's a Pirate dancer, He dances for money, Any old dollar will do... "He's a pirate dancer, His dances are funny... 'Cuz he's only got one shoe! Ahhrrr!" DumbassTurtle
Carefull about the minimum system requirements that they list. I just got Sims 2 and it says OS : Windows XP, Me, 2000, or 98; CPU : 800 MHz or faster; RAM : 256 MB or more; .... CD Rom, big hard drive, good sound and video the usual. I have a 950 with 512 MB of ram with a 64 MB video card and a nice sound card, biiiiig hard drive and of course the cd rom *rolls eyes* I can not play the Sims 2, I can "run" the sims, I can load it up and it doesn't crash but it does not play smoothly (ie it renders the 3D environment and people every few seconds, not so pretty or flowy for a game). The default install settings have everything on the lowest settings you can choose. So just be careful cause they give you minimum requirements but that doesn't mean you'll be playing the game. William the Bloody
Arr, William the Bloody here! Me daddy, Cap'n Pete Straw made me type this review... Anyway, Sid Meiers Pirates be one of the greatest games of all time, says I! Ye choose a difficulty level, as well as a speciality and a name. Then ye head ta the narby tavern and sign up with either the evil Spanish, the greedy Dutch, the cowardly French, or the almighty British! (Arr, I bet ye can guess which one I signed up with...) Ye start out with a mouse of a ship, and begin sailing across the seven seas. Often ye will get in fights with the enemy ships. To defeat them, you will have to select from three different kinds of ammo- Chain Shots, Grape Shots, and Round Shots... I have recently discovered that if ye ram the enemy ship ye may board them. Doing so allows ye to fight their captain. Ye select from a variety of swords to use, then perform a variety -o- attacks and counter attacks. If you win either by sinking their ship or defeating their captain, ye take all their gold, food, cannons, spices, sugar, luxuries, and even their crew! Should ye defeat them by knocking their cap'n overboard, ye can even cature their ship! This is how you can advance yer fleet from a puny vessel to a massive juggernaut of a ship! Throughout the game ye will earn fame points. These are rewarded for capturing other ships, getting promoted, killing famous pirates, discovering lost islands, romancing governers daughters, and finding lost islands. I have five fame points- one for killing the deadly Cap'n Silvers. As ye sink ships, the enemies of those ships may promote ye. Getting promoted makes recruiting easier in ports that belong to the nationality that promoted ye. Also, when ye have been promoted enough, ye may recieve the honour of escorting the governer's babe-licious daughters to the ball. There, you must follow the females lead while dancing. I failed miserably on me first try. If ye succeed, ye may kiss the girl. I ye sink lots of ships, the nationality who owns the ships will obviously get mad and not allow ye to enter their town. So, ye can wait until night and sneak in. Then ye must take out the annoying nightwatch, and slay the governor. I have spent more time writing this than I have actually playing the game, so if you will excuse me, I have some matters to attend to. I will continue to post reviews as I learn more about the game...
julius27
I bought a copy with me new computer, an' it don't work right. I installed it, started the game, an' things went smoothly 'til I got to the other side o' the mutiny. Then it just shuts down with a error message that I don't understand, 'cause I ain't enough of a techie. Does anybody know enough ta lend me a hand 'ere? Iron James Kidd
Yo, behold my friends...for I bought this game too and have had a many problems with it. Seems that Atari and Firaxis (makers of the game) have NO SUPPORT for this at all. I have a very capable computer (AMD 64/ 1gb ram/ 256 GeForce 5500 Overclocked/ SB Audigy Z/ 200 Gb) and can get the game to run sometimes, but most often it just kicks you completely out of the game to your desktop for no reason. After I started having problems with the game, I started to search the internet and there it was....I wasn't the only one with the same problem. It seems to occur on many different types of computers and NOBODY seems to know how to fix it. Atari and Firaxis have little support, just said to turn off all services/programs using msconfig and start computer and try to run it that way. No patch or anything. My suggestion is to search the net yourself BEFORE you buy this game. I love the game when it works, but it really can get you mad when it just decides for no reason to quit. Sometimes I can play for hours and other times it might just be two minutes at a time. So, be forewarned! On a good side, I did go buy Port Royale 2 for a quick pirate fix and am really happy with it so far. A little more complicated that Sid's, but it will do for now until Sid's is fixed. Hope this helps.

Zath Chauvert
According to the firaxis website: "Sid Meier’s Pirates! Xbox is coming soon." :) Xbox seems to have a fair number of novels written to tie into their games. There are "Halo" books, "Crimson Skies" books, and a few others whose names I cannot recall at the moment. In addition, though not Xbox related, I have seen books based on "Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri." I wonder if that means that we have a chance of getting some "Pirates!" novels. julius27
Well, my rig's pretty good. Bought it less than a month ago. I gots a AMD processor, 512 mb RAM, 160 gig hard drive, 16 x dvd rom, an' 64 mb video. I ain't tried shuttin' evrthin' down an' runnin' it, but it shouldn't require all that, should it? I still just get through the openin' movie an' pick my political affiliation, after which is another movie showin' the mutiny when I gets kicked ta me desktop.
