Modern Music

OK. Just woke up after a night of dreamin' of the sea...and of pirates.

Thought I needed some appropriate music, so I checked my CD library...what did I find?

The Blessing is the band (William Topley ring any bells?).

Prince of the Deep Water is the name of the CD.

Popped it into the stereo...turned up the volume. Dogs watching me with terror in their eyes...God, I remember why I loved it so much....There's not a bad track on the album...and there's most definately a pirate mystique...

Just a little sample from "Hurricane-Room"

See me wistful in some harbour bar

I tend the warm glass and the duelling scar

I sing my misappropriation song

for lovers land-locked far too long

Oh come inside the hurrricane room.........

If you don't have this...you really should get it. It'll make your ship rock.

Another few lines from the title track from Prince of the Deep Water....

There's a hole in the sky and the sun's burning down

and the wind on the water fills my sails with sound

there's a reef around the island but the coral is dead

from the filth in the water and the things that you said

But the storms of my memory still come to plague from time to time

but don't let the Fisher King trouble your mind

You count on the grace of the Prince of the deep water

If you cheated in love that can sometimes shape your destiny

Some fly with the birds and some with more courtesy

You count on the grace and favor of the Prince of the deep water

Yeah, this sets my sails......

How about Dropkick Murphy's "Good Rats"? It's about a bunch of rats getting sloshed, but it has a line about the rats diving into pitchers "like a bunch o' drunken pirates, prepare ta walk the plank". Murphy's are more Irish Folk plus Punk, but they've got a rather swashbuckling feel in my opinion.

I thought since there was earlier talk of the Pirates that don't do anything, I'd be makin' me presence known. If ye want some good modern music with piratey tendencies, check out Kilbrannan: http://www.kilbrannan.com/

A lost of Scottish and Irish, but Kirk's solo album, Eye of the Storm is the best one yet with some great old favorites and even better originals. If yeh have the means to see 'em live, I highly recommend that too. I was hooked after the first set.

"Tell me quick" said Old McFee

"What's this all have to do with me?"

"I've spent all my time at sea a loner."

"Is there something else I should know?"

"Something hidden down below the level of your conversation?"

Well he turned away before the answer

Though I yelled aloud he refused to hear

It became too clear

So it went as we put out

I was left in constant doubt

Everything I asked about seemed private

The captain strolled the bridge one night

I stopped him in the evening light

To ask him would it be all right to join him

But he stood there like some idol

And he listened like some temple

And then he turned away

All along the fateful coast

We moved silent like a ghost

The timeless sea of tireless host possessed us

The wind came building from the cold northwest

And soon the waves began to crest

Crashing cross the forward deck

All hands lost

I alone survived the sinking

I alone possessed the tools

On that ship of fools

My choice

Richard Wagner - The Ride of the Valkyries

preformed by New York Philharmonic plus many others

a good sailing song. You may have heard it from the movie

Apocalypse Now. that version was by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra

That was a good version to listen to. Really made that scene come alive.

Pushing the limits means getting out of my comfort zone and giving more when I don't think I have any left.

I hate punk music, but my friend sent me the song:

Relient L - The Pirates who don't do anything.

It's not historically correct... it's more of a humorous look at pirates.

-Captain Cronus

Great song!

Me an' Blackeye Susan been discussin' it 'twixt ourselves.

I am familiar wit' the version done by the World Famous Sanger & Diedle. They are hee-larious!

If ye e'er get a chance t' se them do wot they do well, don't miss it! They are usually out her in Washington, but 'oo nose where they'll be next?

Sir Nigel - aka "Sir Freelancealot"; aka "Ace of Cads"; aka "JACKPOT!!" (cha-CHING!)

"Mojitos BAD!...Lesbians with free rum GOOD!!!"
