DocF225
Coastie, Fear not, I will have to be there in "civies" as well. Me garb met with disaster when our basement flooded o'er the winter and I just found out. Seems me bride moved it without me knowledge. Went looking for it last night and found it in a mildewed mess. May not be salvagable. Doc Wiseman - Ship's Physician, Stur.. er... Surgeon Extrodinaire and general scoundrel. Coastie04
Ahh, but mildew would just add to the authenticity, I'd think Hope at least some of it's salvagable, though. Merrydeath
Mildew? Here's some links for washing tips from the Net. I havn't used them, but I have washed them with baking soda to get rid of smell. http://tips.tipking.com/laundry/tip_13.shtml Jeeves Technique:Mildew thrives with warmth, darkness, and moisture. Mildew is alive and actually eats fiber and can also attack manufactured fibers, causing permanent damage and weakening of fibers and fabrics. Read and follow the care instructions. 1. Brush (soft brush) off as much mildew as possible off affected area. 2.Pretreat the stains by rubbing the areas with a laundry pre-treat. Then launder in the hottest water safe for the fabric, using bleach which is safe for fabric (if possible). (Chlorine bleach is best if OK for the fabric.) Always check for colorfastness before using bleach. 3. Add Bleach to the wash water once it is full and has mixed the clothes a few times, to prevent direct contact with pure bleach with the clothes. 4.Badly covered fabric may be damaged beyond repair. Dry cleaning fluid may help remove old stains, however the damage may be to the fibers themselves, which cannont be repaired. -------------------- http://www.ivillage.com/home/experts/clean..._198564,00.html answer 2 Items that are white or colorfast can be washed with chlorine bleach, which is the most effective mildew remover. Otherwise, soak the clothing in warm, soapy water and borax. If that still doesn't produce results, combine 1/4 teaspoon of bleach for colored clothing (oxygen, not chlorine bleach) and 1/4 cup of three-percent hydrogen peroxide (the kind used for medicinal purposes, not for bleaching hair). With a clean cloth, gently rub the stain until it's gone. Launder the garment and dry in the sun if possible. Pirate Lass with sass, brass, a cutlass, an a nice *ss. DocF225
I'm a'feard that mildew is the least of the problems; seems over the winter we had a small furry "visitor" who took a liking to the gabardine and felt. Apologies mates for missing the Raid, my relief at work showed up late and I got stuck in traffic. Dint get home 'til nigh on 7PM with a screaming headache, took a bit of rum and a nap. Got up near midnight a bit late for the 90 minute trip. Doc Wiseman - Ship's Physician, Stur.. er... Surgeon Extrodinaire and general scoundrel.
