Firewood, Meals and Cooking

To make the best use of the fire in our region of the camp, we're working with St. Johnson and son of the Searle's crewe to coordinate all the cooking equipment needed and other fire issues, such as fire extinguishers and such. Consider this fire handled! :)

The Pyrates of the Coast will be using it for hot meals each night in concert with St. Johnson. Of course, others can use it too - we won't be using it during the daytime activities as we're too busy to do any cooking. So the fire is open then for all to use without any us being in the way. That said, our crewe won't be maintaining the fire when we're not using it. Just stoking it up for dinner-time.

Hope this helps in the planning. I think everyone with a fire needs a fire extinguisher nearby...

Thank you Hurricane.

Good point regarding fire extinguishers. We also have one for the fire in our neck of the beach.

Most likely we'll be using the fire for breakfast each day and dinner Thursday night. Outside of that, it should be clear for anyone to use.

Latest update from Fayma via email today (Nov. 11)

Bring firewood, hammocks are ok (take down in daytime), bring any extra rope you can, showers are good, soap issue pending, braziers for one and all are good, any type will be fine, in modern camping the colemans work too.

I just bought a brazier as well, anyone in the Mercury camp is welcome to use it (and anyone else in neighboring areas as well). I believe Mark G is bringing a brazier or two as well (although it isn't for me to offer the use of his brazier, although I would guess he will). I have one bag of charcoal left over from last month, I'll pick up another or a few more on the way... It would be most appreciated if those who plan to make use of the brazier try and contribute to the charcoal situation.

Not sure where to post this, but this seemed like the best spot...

Does anyone know if there are picnic tables in or around the Modern Camping area. If so, it would save me from having to bring along some big, folding monstrosity.

In the past, I could care less about a fire pit.... well we did have one inside of the Fort about 4 years ago.... that was cool..... But one happily largish fire for everyone to hang around (the Silkies Hide last year) is doable.....

But for the Buccaneer Camp.... we really kinda need a fire.....

I'm hoping that Shay will be bringing some firewood for the Buccaneer Camp (I can't... I'm flying in..)..... I think making a grill type buccan and having some chunks of meat getting turned into buccan/jerkey would work out well.....

AH HA! I'm back; my computer has been behaving nastily for several weeks and I've not had the patience or time to troubleshoot it out. My apologies to all. Patrick, I am securing more firewood as of this morn; native seasoned buttonwood in 4' chunks 10-14" in diameter. I know you are crazy busy, but please advise ASAP as to how large the firewood logs can be. I am at present securing a chainsaw to buck them, but down here in the Keys, no one's has a bar large enough for serious firewood cutting, so I have been scrambling. I'm trying to secure as much as possible, between pallets and non-glued wood so we can share with all; at present, I am unloading the trailer to haul it all down. -Shay

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a reminder for folks driving down, if you can bring firewood (not Baywood) PLEASE bring some. We are running out of options. Going to Home Depot tomorrow to see if we can purchase wood and have it brought down.

Many thanks to everyone that have done their best in the great wood hunt.
