Northwest Jack
Ahoy mate, Just got a beautiful Dragoon pistol from Military Heritage out of Canada. They do not drill the vent and I am about to. Anything I should know before strapping said pistol in a drill press? --NW Jack
Littleneckhalfshell
Ahoy mate,Just got a beautiful Dragoon pistol from Military Heritage out of Canada. They do not drill the vent and I am about to. Anything I should know before strapping said pistol in a drill press? --NW Jack I don't know about others, but I would detach the barrel from the rest of the pistol and put it in a drill press vice to do the drilling. First mark on the barrel, while it is still in the stock & lock, where you want the vent to be, but then remove said barrel and secure it in a cross vice, attached to a drill press base and drill carefully, also I would suggest using cutting oil, remember a vent is a small hole and will require a small drill, don't force it, they are very easy to break. Dutchman
in addition to halfshells thoughts, I would center punch the site and start VERY small with the bits. if you can, adjust the belt to get the slowest rotation, but most torque out of it you can and go slow. let the bit do the cutting, don't force it and use lots of oil. Northwest Jack
I have a Dixie gun kit "Kentucky pistol" and will use it as a gauge for the approximate size of the ent hole. It is pretty small.
Cascabel
Before you drill, you need to check to see if the breech plug is seated overly deep in the barrel. You don't want to be drilling into the plug. The hole wants to wind up just forward of the face of the breech plug. Plug depth is sometimes variable with these India-made guns !! The hole sould be about 1/16" in diameter. It should be centered in relation to the pan, and a little above the bottom of the pan, about even with the top edge. It should not be so high as to not be covered by the frizzen when it is closed. >>>>> Cascabel
