Saddles and tack

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd start a thread on horse related stuff and see where it goes. Here's one of my period saddles;

I still have to put my brass stirup irons on and switch those back onto my nglish utility. I'll put some photos of it up next. Any other horse related stuff out there?

I am planning on tacking the horses out for a photo session as soon as the winter fur sheds. They all three look like fuzzy mud-puppies right now. My little guy, I think he is part pig. He's always rolling in the pasture and covered in crap when not being worked with or ridden! If he didn't already have a name I'd call him "Pig-Pen" after the Charlie Brown character. I still can't climb into a saddle with the knee yet, but I'm getting closer. went for another walk in these Ozark woods and hills yesterday and cannot hardly walk this mornin. I'll be posting more pics pretty soon. If the economy don't shape up soon, I may have to start a real highwayman impression for tourist season! Anyhow, we're selling some of our modern western tack to fit all the horses out in colonial tack. The Amish love those old high-backs with big swells and we have several. I'm just now getting used to the English type without all the ball-busters and knee-grabbers up front.

LOL.... :::nods::: Completely understand, Bo. Can't wait to see yo'r "mudpuppies" all suited out. And here be hopes that yo'r knee gets better soon.

BTW, where did you get yo'r saddle from? Or where did ye find it?

That's a Hillcrest Buena Vista plantation saddle made by Myron Razor out of Indiana. I bought this one from a lady in New York used. Myron is a champ! I had called him about building one last year, and he was about to go for rotator cuff surgery, so he is out of commission for awhile, but he told me about this one as she had contacted him about buying it back. He has "loaners" for potental customers to try out before they spend the coin. The originals were built specifically for long rides by preachers and post-riders, and those who travelled far and often, and have a "suspended" seat. (kinda like ridin' my Shadow with that big touring seat!) I highly recommend him for anyone wanting a nice hand-built period saddle.

It does look a lot more comfortable than my barrel racing saddle that's for sure. Sometimes the way we ride it's definitely nice to have that extra padding!

HeeHee! I was thinkin the same thing. What year did they install horns on a Mac! Ha Ha. :D Right before the turn signals and windshield wipers... Funny. The one I used to have only had rawhide covering. I hated that thing! Glad to have it gone too.

Can say that again... padding is nice, we were in the saddle for one event for 17 hours straight... ouch!

oh we have done cross county trail rides that would make me wish I was alone so I could cry when I dismounted lol.

my step dad is President of a hunting club so when we ride through there to check things out we ride where there are no trails, we forge our own. And being east Texas the brush and foliage is thick and the land is marshy and sometimes you and your horse sink. I do NOT miss riding like that..I miss riding, have not rode since I got myself hitched and then with my femur broke and damaging my knee so that it does not fully bend Im not sure I could do it anymore.

shheeesh...thought ya folks could read 'tween the lines and git the gist of the story... :D

so....here it goes..... :D

a young lady strode into her home...a bit dishelved and flushing...her folks asked her how she made it home so fast?....they knew it was a long walk in from church....she said ..a young gentleman offered her a ride on the back of his horse....and t was a wild ride indeed....there was nothing to hold on to...so reached round front and held onto the saddle horn...to keep from falling off....

her pa took one look outside at the young gentleman outside still sitting upon his horse...."Ma....GIT ME GUN!!!""

ma said..."but why pa?....he seems like such a nice young fellow?"

the daughter kept telling her story.....it was a wild ride indeed.....the horse was goin fast...so i gripped that saddle horn tighter...not to fall off....and the horse went faster....so the tighter i held on...the faster the horse went...ive never been on a horse that fast before!!

"MA...GET ME GUN!!!!"...says pa

"But i dont understand pa?....she jest had a wild ride?...whats wrong with holdin on the saddle horn to keepfrom falling off??".....

pa says....."cause he's riddin a MACCLELLAN!!!"

ma says...."PA.....GIT ME GUN!!!"

Hehehe. :) Oh, I gots it th' first time, Dogge.

Syren, I'm sure someday ye'll get back up on a horse. Bum knee or not. :) I've a bum hip and still rode. More I rode, the better. Though, can't sit in a canter unfortunately unless it's more of a western lope. Hip doesn't allow for a good roll as one should. So, most of the time, I 2-point. Save the horse's back.

Tis a nice saddle. I'll keep the saddlemaker in mind when God graces me with a horse for reenactments.

Ooooo! Get th' Grullo! GORGEOUS color. :)

Lucky mum ye have... with th' horses. :D Oh, someday I'll get a horsey.

I'm sure th' knee and hip will get better so you can ride again. After all, gotta have a Pirate Saddle Club now, don't we? :D

Oy, Bo. Did ye get a period girth with it or are ye using a different girth?

Peligro! Las pyratas del arbolado! Cuidado! :D

I have a leather girth and a neoprene at present, but am looking at a wool and leather dragoon version that looks a lot more comfortable for the animal.
