Lady Cassandra Seahawke Posted January 13, 2009 Share Posted January 13, 2009 SYDNEY (AFP) – An Australian state is offering internationally what it calls "the best job in the world" -- earning a top salary for lazing around a beautiful tropical island for six months. The job pays 150,000 Australian dollars (105,000 US dollars) and includes free airfares from the winner's home country to Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland's state government announced on Tuesday. In return, the "island caretaker" will be expected to stroll the white sands, snorkel the reef, take care of "a few minor tasks" -- and report to a global audience via weekly blogs, photo diaries and video updates. The successful applicant, who will stay rent-free in a three-bedroom beach home complete with plunge pool and golf buggy, must be a good swimmer, excellent communicator and be able to speak and write English. "They'll also have to talk to media from time to time about what they're doing so they can't be too shy and they'll have to love the sea, the sun, the outdoors," said acting state Premier Paul Lucas. "The fact that they will be paid to explore the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, swim, snorkel and generally live the Queensland lifestyle makes this undoubtedly the best job in the world." If its a hoax, its running on a lot of websites that carry real news and real job placements. 100G's for six months work- note a one time gig, not a recurring job. And the work consists of hiking, scuba diving, going to resturants, and running a video blog on the experience, oh and maintianing the house w/pool you live in for an addition to the base compensation. Real bottom line its a video spokesman job that works like a reality TV show. You'll need to make a one (1) minute video saying why you think the Great Barrier Reef is interesting as part of the application process. Not to shabby. Why am I sharing my opinion? It is as stated...they are taking applications until Feb 22nd, with the one hired starting on July 1st. On another site they did say you can take your family with you...as the home is a 3 bedroom. Your airfare is taken care of too. Only thing I am not a good swimmer....HUMMMM, wonder how good I can get by Feb 22nd? Anyhow...the main statement in the above is.... While the advertisement is a stunt, the job is still genuine. Applicants must submit a 60-second video application, and 11 finalists will be flown from their home countries to Hamilton Island in May for the final selection process.
