MadL Posted January 5, 2009 Share Posted January 5, 2009 Now I done it...actually I did it a month ago or so, but I broke th' tip off me ramrod, unfortunately I did not know it until I got home so I do not know where to find it - tried blaming it on three little kittens but that don't seem to work... So, does anyone know a good source for locating ram rods or ram rod tips? I need t' replace one for an Elliot Light Dragoon. I have written to both Middlesex and Track of the Wolf - I did see a tip at Track of the Wolf for "45 cal and up" but only in steel, the others they offer I do not know if they would fit as I no longer have my original to take measurements from. Does anyone know the difference in size between a Brown Bess ram tip and a Light Dragoon? Shape is dead on but I do not have a Brown Bess t' compare with, they say th' Brown Bess tapered tip is 7/8 diam which would fit me 5/8 diam barrel but they do naught say how 'long' it be....perhaps someone here with a Brown Bess would measure th' length o' their tip for me? uh, RamRod tip please, just yer firearm's RamRod tip.... ~All skill be in vain if an angel pisses down th' barrel o' yer flintlock! Also got a response from Track of th' Wolf say'n th' Early Brown Bess should have th' correct size tip for it be naught but one half inch, but they did naught tell me th' length? Then Middlesex also wrote say'n they recommend just a solid wood o' Hickory that it would be proper 'period' and with out th' weak point made by th' section - that sound like a good thought as well. ~All skill be in vain if an angel pisses down th' barrel o' yer flintlock! Capt. Bo of the WTF co. Posted January 7, 2009 Share Posted January 7, 2009 If you go with hickory, here's a tech tip; buy three or four when you do. Get a piece of PVC 2" diameter water pipe, a cap, and a screw plug fitting and make a tube. Fill that tube with either kerosene or boiled linseed oil and place your hickory rods in it, seal it up tight. This helps keep them flexible and they will last alot longer. Having the extras ready for when the inevitable break occurs is the reason for buyin three or four blanks at a time. Bo Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I plan'd on get'n three or four, however I have naught yet found any blanks. All Track of the Wolf seem t' have are th' tips, they be thread' for metal rod but I figure that still be fine for wooden. I found a link t' a couple places local that offer Hickory and several other dowelings, but I do naught have a lathe t' turn them 'n get th' taper like th' original (I still have th' rod, just th' tip be miss'n). Middlesex wrote me and suggest gett'n a straight one then use a vise and scissors (held open in a V) then shave it down. Would prefer t' find proper turn'd blanks if I can.... still gotta go check Rifle Shoppe however, been kinda busy see'n as I get laid off Friday so everything else suddenly take th' back o' line :angry: ~All skill be in vain if an angel pisses down th' barrel o' yer flintlock! Worthy of note is that my fowler needs a 52" rod. Not so easy to find, but Rob over at the shop is able to make one. I'll post an update after I receive mine. Quartermaster James Posted February 14, 2009 Share Posted February 14, 2009 (edited) To follow up: I received my rod Monday. Rob at Period Ramrods does good work. The ramrod is exactly as described: a wooden ramrod with a steel core. It has brass ferrules at each end, with 8/32 threads at one end and 10/32 at the other. Very nice to have the threads at the tail end, for one can simply screw in a T-handle instead of needing pliers or a rod puller when the rod gets tight. Great at the range too. Not to mention the obvious versatility having both thread sizes available allows. Of course, it's a bit heavier than a plain twig of hickory; but unlike my first, it's not going to break (the only rod they have reported fail was shot downrange!) Also, when loading the 51" barrel I do appreciate the added heft. In short, I highly recommend these. Tell Rob I sent you over. BTW: Since I am refinishing my fowler anyway, I ordered mine in unfinished hickory so I could match it to my stock. Rob will do his best to match any color you choose if you order yours finished. As they are a few coin more then what th' Riffle Shop offers in plain wood I have just ordered th' plain wood for now but do intend t' return for an unbreakable. It seem from his form that he currently only makes for rifles but said if I send all the measurements he would quote me a price for a smaller pistol rod. Got his site bookmarked, now just wait'n for a new crew t' sign accord with....which may be delayed as I also just began venture int' a training program for a new certification - gonna take me network engineering career in a new direction and see how networking 'Intelligent Homes' works out (maybe I can begin a new market and develop th' "Intelligent Tavern"!) ~All skill be in vain if an angel pisses down th' barrel o' yer flintlock! As much as I like these rods for a long arm, I have to question their value for a short piece. IMHO, it seems a pistol rod is much less likely to break, and is much more readily replaceable. (maybe I can begin a new market and develop th' "Intelligent Tavern"!) But please don't put my favorite wenches out of work! Bent down while getting geared up at a fest and it fell off me belt one day, I think that is when it broke but I did not notice it until I got home th' next day. No idea where the tip is, most likely embedded in someone's tire treads by now But please don't put my favorite wenches out of work! Oh NO!
