"Goggles? I think I have a pair of goggles," says Chain Shot. Leaves to rummage around in one of his dresser drawers. Comes back and hands me a small brown, heavy cardboard box. "How about these? I think these are from WWI. I got them from a friend, who got them at a garage sale way back when."

Inside their original box are a pair of folding aviator goggles, brown leather, light tin frames, and elastic head band. He hands them to me and says, "Try them on."

I do, then he says, "You know, the reddish-brown leather goes nice with your red hair."

B) I think I may keep him!

I'll post pictures of the goggles after the holidays. They really are very kewl!

Rats.... this should have been here, not in the "Steampunk thread".....

I'm takin' a break from the weed whacker (Dang thing was sold as a sewing machine, but all it can do right now is shred the thread....)

I finished the "Combat Vest" and am (attempting) to sew a leather flight helmet....

I was digging through my stuff looking for the really old linen for a Buccaneer shirt, and found a russet brown jacket I forgot I'd bought... I'm Lining the thing with some light tan blanket (may be too warm to wear in Summer, unless I fold it up...) I still have to add the goggles loops, a brim, two "D" rings for the chin strap and sew the lining to the shell, so whenever the weed whacker decides to work again..... it should turn out great....

I might have to dig out the eyepatch I made... I wet molded the leather, and sewed on a skull and crossed bones necklace danglie... the cool part of it, is that the necklace danglie has holes for the nose and eyes, so I can see outta it..... Wax my mustache add a scar and I will make a down-right fearsome Airship Pyrate.....

I also have to do some modification to the legs of the jophers that I made... but that should be easy enough... Then decide if I want boots with a ton of buckles, or to just make some tall gaiters...

Pictures should be coming soon.......

Was rummaging through my pattern box and ran across a pattern for late 19th century Britches. Bought the pattern when I was a SASS member but never sewed up a pair. Also found patterns for vests, shirts and a duster coat. I think thay all will fit the bill with some modifications.

Wandered into the local fabric store where the girls know me but some of the other customers were taken aback by how I knew my way around the store and the the fabrics. Decided on a nutmeg cotton duck for the britches and a deep chocolate duck for the duster coat which I'll treat with duxback to make it weather tight (dual purpose wear). Still working up the shirt ideas and the vest. Not sure bout foot wear yet. I've got a line on a WWI Flying helmet and goggles.

I'd like to have it done for NY Comic-Con in February.

Looked long and hard at a new sewing machine. They had Husqvarna demos going on all day. Little Pricey...

Yeah... kinda funny when that happens....

"Can I help you?"

"Nah... I'm looking for the right shade of polar fleece for a Bandito's head...."

it does kinda throw them off.......

Not unlike when I roll into Sally Beauty Supply and head right for the Nail Polish Aisle. I use it as paint. Cut it 50:50 with lacquer thinner and run it through the airbrush. Dries almost instantly, wears like iron and can be hand polished out to a mirror finish. Throw on a couple clear coats and it's a thing of beauty.

I walk right up to the counter with my polish, a handful of the nail sanding sticks and my Sally Beauty Member Card. Again, the girls who work there all know me (I went to college with the store Manager) but it's always good for a laugh with the unsuspecting customers.

You know, Patrick, once you get the design finalized, then you could customize patch designs with small logos for the different positions of the crew — a gunner would have..., a quartermaster would have..., a bombadier would have... added to the basic design.

I've been kinda playing with this, but I want to see what others think about it....

An Alternative History; or what and why the crew of Columbia's Revenge is Pyrating...

Kinda short version...

The South wins the American Civil War.... OK, they don't occupy the North, but they do/did secede From the Union.... so the Countrys of North America....

The Confederacy of America

The Union of the United States

The Republic of Texas

The Republic of California

New Mexico (part of Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona and part of Southern California)

French Mexico

English Canada

The Great Wilderness (all the rest of North America)

Because North America is fragmented into different smaller Countrys, and there isn't much cooperation between any of them... Airship Pyracy can flourish... For example, it's easy to get a letter of Marque from the California Republic to attack whaling ships from the Union of the United States in the Pacific... The Union of the United States and the Confederacy of America, are not at war, but their borders are heavily trenched and defended.... New Mexico and French Mexico raid each other frequently... and The Great Wilderness is untamed and free to exploit...

Because North America is fragmented, there isn't a trans-continental railroad... shipping and trade between the Countrys is all by Airship... (three guesses where Airship Pyrates fit in...)

I'm thinking of having the Columbia's Revenge originally built in the California Republic... but Emperor Norton's Government won't acknowledge it's existence.... (Pay the right people, and you can get almost anything in the California Republic...)

Sounds great! But can I make the suggestion of including "French Canada" as well? It seems kinda odd to have "English Canada" without there being any non-English or any other type of Canada... Other than that, I love the concept. :D

Some ideas, and stuff we would need:

A base of operations/safe haven...like Port Royal was for the GOAP.

An outlet for the goods pyrated to be sold off. Maybe a contact person/company which turns a blind eye to where their goods are coming from?

Pyracy for hire...like a letter of marque, pitting our airship against another country? But with no loyalty to any one country...steal for one on one day, steal from another the next day...or both at the same time. LOL

AND, a really seedy tavern to hang out in when we're not in the air. :D

and buccaneers and buried gold...

That would be easy enough to change... (I was focusing more on the United States,... and just added "English" Canada as an after thought....sorry) SO... How did Canada split into English and French?

A base of operations/safe haven...like Port Royal was for the GOAP.

I'll have to add a few.... but The California Republic, the Republic of Texas and New Mexico all would work well for a Port Royalish city friendly to Airship Pyrates.....

Hummmm. Lake Tahoe might be really nice for that.... it would be close enough to all the shipping lanes, and isolated enough to avoid reprisal attacks... And geographically, it's easy enough to find from the air.....

Well, going with the "spirit" of historical parody... Originally in "real" history, Canada was colonized by the French and then the English came... In "real" history England didn't take over until the F&IW (late 1750s), so in the "altered time line" it could just be that England never took over the French portions, and hence the two seperate Canadas always existed.... If you want to really throw back, they were originally called Lower Canada (French area and what would be modern day Quebec and Labrador) and Upper Canada (English areas, Ontario and most of the Candian Maritime provinces).

OK... not about Airship Pyrates.....

Fwiw, there still is, to this day, French America.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Pierre_and_Miquelon

The only time the guillotine was ever used in North America was in Saint-Pierre in the late 19th century. Joseph Néel was convicted of killing Mr. Coupard on Île aux chiens on December 30, 1888, and executed by guillotine on August 24, 1889. The guillotine had to be shipped from Martinique and it did not arrive in working order. It was very difficult to get anyone to perform the execution; finally a recent immigrant was coaxed into doing the job. This event was the inspiration for the film The Widow of Saint-Pierre (La Veuve de Saint-Pierre) released in 2000. The guillotine is now in a museum in Saint-Pierre.

Hey, Michael just color in the part of Canada you want to be French, then I'll change the map.....

I had to work this weekend, so I didn't get anything fun done..... I have one of those cheap Spanish Falcions that I want to re-grind and make it look more like a Bowie knife..... eergh... Bowie Cutlass..... Then I can make a scabbard for it and sew that to the back of my Combat Vest..... I still have to add the eppilets and make a paldron for the vest.... I also want to figure out where to paint a picture of Columbia somewhere on the vest (or maybe on the pauldron.... ) Pictures should be coming soon, but dang, the thing has enough pockets to hold alla my loot.....

I have two metal "Hip Flasks" that I'm thinking of salt etching so one says "RUM" and the other "MORE RUM"....

Sounds like you've got some brilliant ideas in the works Patrick!!!

Okay, here is my suggestion on the division of Canada... The red area would be French Canada (or Lower Canada, or Neaveaux France, or whatever you want to call it), the blue lined area would be English Canada (or Upper Canada, or whatever).... Anything beyond the area I've slated for English Canada would likely just be more of "The Wild Lands" as you've labeled them. Sorry for the shoddy work on the map, but I've re-installed my computer recently and haven't installed any graphic software yet, so all I had was Windows "Paint".

Well I'll have to come back to this thread when I re-do the map, to get the correct spelling anyway.....

I have an older map that I will more than likely use when I re-make the map... (it will be fun to erase some City's that don't fit.... :P .) I want to also add major Airship.... eeergh... shipping routes....

I love it!!

Maybe there could or should be an independent hold out in the wild.... maybe add Washington and Oregon to California and go with a Western Republic.. I seem to remember a good oriental population in Seattle and Vancover in BC??? And down in San San Fran, isn't there a good size oriental population??? maybe California went heavily oriental?? and the rest of the coast was more settlements and coves where anything goes??

We'll still need some sturdy grappling hooks for boarding actions!!

I can't forget to add a temporary heat shroud for either my double barrelled Shotgun or Blunderbuss..... maybe bayonet lug??
