michaelsbagley
I'd recommend staying away from wool for stays... It's generally too stretchy. Just curious though, does not Kass recommend wool stays first ? It's entirely possible that she does.... But I just realized how silly my statement was... I had it in my head for stays of ALL wool construction, when Nell mentioned Mary's stays that are wool with likely linen lining, I then thought what is my issue with wool stays? I shouldn't have one, as long as they are interlined with linen or other not as stretchy fabrics. So wool stays are fine, and I completely retract my previous statement! Capt. Sterling
Ah I see where you were going now... now it makes sense... my apologies "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... michaelsbagley
And the madness continues... Here are links to the latest images from this project, now completely sewn together (except for the straps and edge binding). The panels are joined together using backstitching. Tomorrow we'll insert the reeds, and then perhaps attach the straps... Outside View Inside View Dutch I think you might be correct, had I been more vigilant in my sewing duties and made her a second set of stays sooner, this madness may not have come to pass. erisblackrose
Now if my hubby made me garb. I'd look bad. He has no sewing skills(except maybe a patch on his uniform). I'm the one handy dandy with a needle.Beautiful work on the stays. I'm not at that level. I have a question for the ladies and gents. What the hell do you wear to a Pirate ball? I am planning to attend the Buccaneers&Privateers event in New London,CT and closest evening garb sad but true. I got is belly dance or 21st century evening dresses. I'm not looking for authentic re-enactment but I'm more Ren faire type, period related you call it. My mundane color pallette is mostly black, purple, peacock and jewel tones. Any suggestions or websites so I can buy the garb (under $200.00). I got no time to make one otherwise I would whip out my mother in laws 1929 hand cranked singer(rest her soul). I saw a few but I could use recommendations on which ones are better. I got a bit of time but I could use the help. thanks. Also etiquette tips would help too at the pirate event.(or you can pm me as well) mehndidancer at aol dot com Going to my 1st Pirate convention is a lot different than interacting at a Ren faire or sci-fi convention. I got to get myself prepared. ERIS Welcome to my nightmare.... I have embraced my inner magpie. OOH SHINY!!
Cheeky Actress
Possessed? No. Determined. Cheeky knows how determined. Indeed I do, Kate... There is something very rewarding about getting something finished PRIOR to an event and not worrying about finishing it 10 mins. before the event starts. LadyBarbossa
Ooo... can't wait t' see th' new attire at RF5, Kate. :) WOO HOO for new attire! :::Does a snoopy dance::: Eris... not many places out there that are quality 18th c clothiers will have a gown for under $200. If ye have no particulars, eBay does have some outfits from a couple eras out there that could be close enough to piracy for th Ball. As to a pirate ball, not sure. Not been to one yet. I have at least one person wanting me to attend a Pirate Ball in Missouri at the end of February. Not sure if that will happen. If I do, might either wear my gown (if I have it finished in time) or some fancy piratey outfit of mine like the crimson velvet outfit. ~Lady B Tempt Fate! an' toss 't all t' Hell!" Cheeky Actress
I've been looking at this for some time now... I would love to make it, but I am not sure if I should make it a mantua or bodice gown. Any input will be helpful. Cheeky Actress
Ooo! Nice picture...great find, Captain. (GROAN)Yet, I was worried you (or someone else) was going to say that. I don't have a problem with making another Mantua. It's just that I have a devil of a time fitting it to me. No extra hands in the household ...that know what they are doing (wink!) My dress form isn't my size any longer and it doesn't increase to the size I am. I will see what I can do to find a affordable velvet/velveteen in blue. Nuts! I will need a new pair of bodies (Stays) for this one. All the others don't seem to fit quite right now...and I know that I will look like a full "chest of draws" if I wear the lay-woman's stays I made. Capt. Sterling
Ah now that I am finally thinking... is ermine doable in England for non-nobility?? I know you aren't using the real stuff... just curious... sure would save you a ton of time and trouble, if you went with just the white, if the law doesn't allow the ermine...
