Seafarers suffered 49 attacks between January and March around the world, up 20 percent from the 41 recorded in the same period last year, the International Maritime Bureau said in a report by its piracy reporting center in Malaysia. Capn_Enigma Posted April 21, 2008 Author Share Posted April 21, 2008 Presumed pirates take fishing boat off Somalia MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- Another vessel has been hijacked off the coast of Somalia, this time a Spanish tuna fishing boat, a senior Spanish Foreign Ministry official told CNN on Sunday. "We presume pirates," the official said, but said he could not confirm news reports that four pirates were involved in the assault. Read more. "The floggings will continue until morale improves!" Three people were wounded in the operation, said Abdullahi Said Samatar, security affairs minister in Somalia's semiautonomous Puntland region. ET Essay How to Deal With Pirates The rise of piracy is threatening international trade and raising complex questions. The only way to end the scourge is to respond aggressively, says Michael B. Oren. * Such a campaign will not be risk-free. The danger exists that America and its allies will become bogged down indefinitely in seeking to locate and destroy an elusive foe. The operations may also prove costly at a time when America can least afford them. Finally, there is the constant headache of maintaining an international coalition which may contain members who, like many early Americans, prefer to bribe the pirates rather than fight them. In spite of the potential pitfalls, an America-led campaign against the pirates is warranted. Though the Somali pirates do not yet endanger American trade, they will be emboldened by a lack of forceful response. Any attempt to bargain with them and to pay the modern equivalent of tribute will beget more piracy. Now, as then, the only effective response to piracy is a coercive one. "We shall offer them liberal and enlightened terms," declared Commodore Decatur, "dictated at the mouths of our cannons." theM.A.dDogge Posted November 25, 2008 Share Posted November 25, 2008 has anyone noticed the coincidence between the state of the general population of somalia today...and many parts of the world durring the GAoP?!?!? no money or trade....no jobs....high shipping traffic thru their waters...high tarriffs on trade....ransoms and bountys....pyrates vs the un-armed merchant sailors who once boarded simply give over the ship to be ransomed....safe harbour for pyrates in secret ports...faster lighter more manuverable boats vs huge trade laden ships....better weapons vs the unarmed ships..... and who says history dosent repeat itself??
