*Sigh* Good luck. These people don't read this forum. They come in, register, post their junk and leave. Being able to see the IP addresses, I can tell you they come from all over the world.

I wonder how they orchestrate this stuff? If you watch the patterns, you'll notice that the same basic stuff keeps coming up. It's like they have a network where they share forum addresses and then swarm in and attack.

You KNOW they have their own hangouts, right?

It seems logical, but I guess I don't truly know anything until I experience it. What is the motivation for people all over the world to promote a particular site, though? Since I've been having to fish these things out of the Beyond Pyracy stream, I've seen about 20 different IPs...ranging from Florida, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Asia, Latin America, China and more.

So just as we pyrates gather together from the Seven Seas in this one place then go forth to other places, so do the spammers.

Their motivation? What is anyone's motivation? Answer that and you'll have the answer to why spammers do what they do.

I think it might be the evil chaotic faction just practicing their craft. If they can make some money off the deal, so much the better - that might be one way the thing is happening. They figure they're getting the best of both possible worlds - making a profit while sowing discord and confusion.

I'm no expert, but I do recall hearing that when you log on using cable modems, the IP addy changes. So it probably wouldn't do much good to give you the list of IPs. Unless you know something I don't?

what if you could make it harder/take longer to join? not difficult really, but maybe having to wait 24 hours,or having to send a reply email of why you want to join.maybe that would deter spammers? i dont know.

:lol: And I figured no one would reply to this..though I must confess I am sorry to have lost my temper so.

Yes you can make it more difficult to join, and all that..not sure about sending a request though will have to change the settings on my forum and see how that works..But again a moderator would be busy all day sorting applications and that can get frustrating and time consuming.

And it seems we get most of the spammers in the late afternoon and evening, so as long as we can delete them as they come..All to the good.

Sorry for losing my temper,

unfortunately alot of people are.loo at the number of people viewed the threads like "britney spears naked".i just mean to say that they are getting alot of exposure (no pun inteded)

they are called trolls and have contests to see how many people will respond to their threads and such.. we found that out when we all went after a spammer who wrote nasty stuff about women and hurting them.. they rack up points and piss us off.. I do wish I had a webcannon. :)

Those bloody spammers make everyone's blood boil. I've never understood what they hope to accomplish. Do they really think we are that stupid? B)

That's part of it, certainly. But I've been told what they really accomplish is having links to their sites on legitimate sites means the webcrawlers rank them higher in their search sites.

See, Google ranks sites based on the results of what their webcrawler 'bots turn up. (Webcrawlers follow links from one page to another.) If there are a lot of links to a site, Google ranks them higher when someone does a search on their site. The links the webcrawlers find are also weighted by the legitimacy of a site. So if your site is ranked highly on Yahoo!'s search site, you get lots of "credit" - making a strong case for a high ranking of your site. (This stops people from creating a bunch of sham sites that are just links to their crappy porn site and getting lots of cred for their massive numbers of links.) So if these SPAMmers flood forums with their links, they get loads of "legitimate" links. The ranking game is a really curious animal.

Point being, by putting their links on our site, they get a two-fer. Some people may follow the links, but, far more importantly, the web crawlers may credit them with having more legitimate links and rank them higher. A couple dozen people may seem them here, but if they're ranked on the first page of Google when someone searches for "Britney Spears naked," tens and probably hundreds of thousands of people will see them. Most people don't get past the first page of a Google search, so the first page is prime real estate. See how it works?
