Capt. Sterling Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 As always the number one question is..what type of look are you going for? Hollywood/fantasy or historical/accuracy? "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... I was forced to write what I would say to prevent the loss of blood, and because of the pain I suffered by speaking."~ Woodes Rogers Crewe of the Archangel http://jcsterlingcptarchang.wix.com/creweofthearchangel# http://creweofthearchangel.wordpress.com/
Jacky Tar Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 As always the number one question is..what type of look are you going for? Hollywood/fantasy or historical/accuracy? Sterling's Archangel's, whose goin' Hollywood now? (The Charlie's Angels style shadow picture is very funny!)

Jacky Tar Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Blackbonie, the lads are right, don't lop off yer head luv. Yer more attractive than the rest o' us, an we include our mugs in our pics. The jacket needs buttons (I'm sure ye know this), an I'd say the pants says Hollywood or at least Sunset Strip (The Roxy); but it all says, Pirate!
Capt. Sterling Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Thank you, they make me proud... very proud indeed "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... Capt. Sterling Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 Actually the cut on the front of the coat is not too bad really... Not sure about the neck edging... looks a bit too smooth for what I have seen in patterns from actual garments... any chance on a picture of the back since the pleats were what really made the coats so interesting.. its that..."swish" thing when yer fencing... Also is the coat lined? Hangs a little... um... limp... waistcoat looks fine, except I prefer the longer ones... Jack Roberts Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Thats the pattern I used to make my first waistcoat and coat. I'm planning on changing the pattern a bit on my next shot. Squaring out the neck a little bit and stuff like that. And Capt'n Sterling I would also like a little clarification on what you mean by smooth. It looks like the edging I used on my brown coat.
HildeKitten Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 its made using that POTC simplicity pattern. I'm sorry to have to say this, but if you're going for historical accuracy then you're using the wrong pattern. The Simplicity one is a costume pattern, and it's not even an accurate PotC pattern (the coats in that movie are made entirely differently then a coat from that pattern). Godets (gussets) weren't used during the GAoP, they came into fashion later. If you want a real historically accurate pattern, then I can heartily recommend the Reconstructing History ones. They're more expensive than the Simplicity ones, but they're SO much better (and ALL sizes come in one package printed on real paper instead of that flimsy crap Simplicity etc use ^^). I have 3 of them and I love them all to death :) If you decide to do fantasy pirate after all, you can just adjust them to suit your needs, that's what I did :) I used the Simplicity pattern (I do own it) to make a waistcoat for my brother Scott and a frock coat for my brother Timothy for their LARP characters (they didn't need accurate and specifically wanted this kind of thing) but I didn't particulary like working with them. For my own fantasy pirate costume I adjusted RH patterns and I vastly prefered that over working with the Simplicity pattern. The fit and model of the garments are much better looking. Anyway: these are coats I've made with modified RH patterns: It's a little big on me, but that was done on purpose because I like my summer coats loose :) House of Secrets Incorporated Fashion and costume design For all your piracy needs
Capt. Sterling Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 Hope this helps...scanned some different necklines for patterns taken from original coats... the softer curve seems to just start coming in during the 1720s and by the 1730s the neckline edge no longer has a sharp distinction... 1730s is after the recognized hey day or Golden Age of pyracy... Capt. Sterling Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 And, here we go, 1720-27 All from Cut of Men's Clothes by Waugh "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell...
Jack Roberts Posted July 10, 2007 Posted July 10, 2007 The Simplicity pattern definitely has the 1730's curved neckline. Which is one of the thing I wanted to change along with the godets removed and leaving an opening in the back. Cause you would need that riding horse. (which I've actually done with a coat made out of this pattern.) Another question is do the shoulder seams look right with this pattern? They're set at an angle toward the back. That might be a bet severe. Oh well good job by the way. I like the colors. And lining the coat shouldn't be to hard. It did mine with no real issues.
blackbonie Posted July 10, 2007 Author Posted July 10, 2007 thanks so much for the input.it helps alot.i have always been into fantasy but am just now starting to get into the authentic. i am gonna finish this coat because i am happy with it so far,but i think i will buy that better pattern for future projects (im always working on something).
