Aye Rumba..In December of last year I went into the hospital my blood count had dropped to a four and had to have a major blood transfusion. I still have the issue that causes me to severely anemic and it's considered life threatning and cannot afford the surgery to fix it. So If I disappear again it's for more blood.

And BayPirate yer a sweet scallywag..."Ray make that two buckets fer the gent"

You all thought I was kidding.

Read this. Donating blood in someone's name.

The relevant text from the page:

Can I donate blood in someone's name or as a credit against future blood needs?

Yes. Delta Blood Bank operates on a credit system. Each blood donation creates a credit that can be used for one of several options: Replacement Credit, Bloodplan Credit, or Community Donor Credit.

Replacement Credits can be applied to a patient who is using blood, to help reduce the patient's hospital bill. The name of the patient and the name of the hospital should be provided to us at the time you register to donate.

We need to find out whether this is a national system, and whether there is a blood bank in your area that will facilitate this!

I found out some more information about "Replacement Credits" aka donating blood in someone's name.

- Some blood banks participate in this program, some don't. Red Cross does not. You'll have to find one in your area that does.

- The size of the credit is between 20 and 30 dollars. Appalling, when you consider how much they charge per unit to put it in.

If you are going to be donating blood anyway -- and you should be donating blood anyway, provided you are eligible-- you may as well make the donation go a little farther by taking advantage of the credit ... provided it makes sense. In my case, the nearest participating blood bank seems to be two hours away. It would cost more than the 20 dollar credit just to drive there, so it's not a good option for me. Your mileage may vary.
