Yersinia Pestis Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Does anyone know when dispensing valves were developed? I am looking at a very nice powder horn. It is beautifully scrimshawed; however, it has a dispensing valve on it. I might be incorrect, but that does not strike me as being GAoP. Any ideas?
Dorian Lasseter Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Well..... I used to do ECW (1640s), and for the bandoleer of wooden powder charges, there was also a shot pouch and priming flash that had a valve, but it usually didn't hold up to abuse, so was replaced with a stopper.... So, a stopper would be seen as well as a valve of sorts... I'll see if I can dig up an image of what I mean... More to come... This is off Sykes Suttler's site, notice the stopper... This is a very fancy flask, and a small image, but there you can see the valve... Truly, D. Cascabel Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Dispensing valves existed at least as far back as the wheel lock era, but they tended to be fairly delicate and not very robust at all. Most of the ones I have seen were on ornate powder flasks made to go with fancy guns. The 19th century designs that we usually see are much less prone to damage from rough handling. >>>> Cascabel
Patrick Hand Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 There are some interesting guns and flasks in the Royal Danish Arsnel Museum this page is a list (Unfortunatly in Danish) http://www.thm-online.dk/tidsperioder/ this page shows some guns and flasks.... http://www.thm-online.dk/tidsperioder/1648...-1670/montre12/ Unless you can read Danish, your kinda on yer own..... Yersinia Pestis Posted April 12, 2007 Author Posted April 12, 2007 Gentleman, Thank you for your input. It looks as if I could go with either a valve or a stopper. The Royal Danish Arsenal Museum web site was awesome. They have some very beautiful pieces. Thanks for the reference.
