  1. I'd advise washing it.  However, before you do, run a stitch along both cut ends to keep fraying to a minimum.  Then be prepared to iron the hell out of it.  It's been awhile since I've messed with linin, but I seem to recall ironing it whether I've run it though a dryer, or let it line dry.

Thanks! Maybe a dumb question, but here goes... If I pre-wash the linen material, and then use (not pre-washed) linen thread, am I going to have a problem with shrinking linen thread, thus messing puckering or otherwise messing up the seams? TIA.

  2. Mick, both of those mugs would work, as they are 18th C repros..... Jas Townsend does very goode as they maonly sell to reenactors...

These might be more in the 1750s timeline, but I can't see them being much different than 30 yrs earlier...

Thanks Dorian. Hmmm... that's what I was a little worried about, i.e. that they may be a little later than GAoP. Does anyone know a pewter or other mettalic mug/tankard that's GAoP for sure? TIA.

  3. I had more fun than human beings should be allowed. I only wish I could have stayed for Sunday. MDRF Pirate Invasion is definitely becoming the highlight of my ren season. Thanks Crimson, Snake, Blender, Madam Macaw, Marona, Rummy Gal, and lots of others for the great company. And major props to Duncan for organizing the encampment. You rock! B)

  4. I will be at the camp  saturday morning. My pirate jeep can hold about 6 drunkin sailors.....so all we need is a helmsmen to get us back to the camp.....If you are staying at the campground and you don.t want to drive back than catch a ride up with me>>>>>

    Crimson,

I'd like to take you up on that. My A/C isn't working at all, so if I could catch a ride from camp to faire and vice versa on Saturday, I'd really appreciate it. It is a bummer. In return, I'll buy you a round or two. (Like I wouldn't have anyway?) .

  5. All,

Thanks for all the advice. I just ordered some black 1-1/2" Twill Tape, since they are out of stock on the hat braid. I'm going to try it out first on a black felt hat I made a while back with metallic trim. I recently 'waterproofed' it with thinned shellac, and when it dried, the edges sort of 'flared'. Neat look, but the metallic braid didn't fare well. So I'll make a reclamation project out of it when the twill tape arrives. I'll post a pic when the time comes. Thanks again!

  6. The trim you see on the picture from my site is a wool hat with a period style worsted wool twill tape.  You can find some in several colors from  Wooded Hamlet.

    GoF,

Thanks for the links! I was looking at the woodedhamlet site and I see they have both "Heavy Worsted Hat Braid" and the "Worsted Wool Twill Tape". To my (inexperienced) eye, the "Hat Braid" looks more like the trim on your hat than the "Twill Tape" does, but I can convince myself either way. Are you certain that yours is the Twill Tape? I want to make sure I get the right stuff... don't know if one is easier to work with, etc. TIA!

  7. Once I have them tied up and shapped I coat them in a bee's wax kind of stuff, it gives them a really worn and authentic look. I forget what the stuff is called, but you can get it at a hardware store, usually in the paint section.

    Petee,

If you can remember what the stuff is called, I'd be much obliged.

  8. Having made a couple of tricorns from blanks, which I trimmed with 'glued' on mettalic braid, I want to try something a little more challenging, like sewing on a fabric 'ribbon' trim. So the question is... what kind of material would be suitable, and how should I go about sewing it? Do you sew it on before or after steaming and tacking the sides? And do you fold it over the edge of the brim and sew it to both sides, or just sew it flat on the 'outside' side? Also, hand or machine, and what kind of stitch? TIA!

  9. Well, it doesn't look like there's a time/place arranged for a P.P. meetup tomorrow, and I'm not going to suggest one, since I'm not exactly sure what time I can get to PARF (maybe 2:00?). I'm going to try to remember descriptions people have given. Myself, I think I'll wear a black felt tricorn with gold trim, off-white shirt, plain brown pants, black boots, red sash, brown belt and baldric, cutlass on the side, dagger in back, belaying pin and leather tankard somewhere on my person. Or something like that...all articles subject to change! Oh yeah, I'm about 6' tall and have a goatee.

  10. Well now I finished the sash today, with a couple of days to spare. My hook didn't get caught even once. Now I have to figure out how to wear this thing with a belt over it, i.e. with the knot 'above' the belt and the ends draped over the belt, or with the knot sort of smashed under the belt, or...

  11. Anyone heading up for opening weekend?

Opening weekend at PARF, I'll be there on Sunday with a couple of non-pirate type friends, though I myself most definitely will be pirate garbed. If you see a brown tricorn with little gold-leaf cutlasses around the edge, that'd be me.

  12. If it takes you nine days to hem a sash, you have other problems of  truly epic proportions.

:) You haven't seen me sew! Actually, it's more like 8 days to get my wife to thread and install the bobbin for me, then one day for me to look at the machine, then 3 seconds to do the hem.*

    * Unless the needle breaks, in which case we start all over again. 8 days to replace the needle...
