  1. I see some recent posts in here so thought I would go back and read some of the old posts, it is funny as many good sea shanties as I have heard in the last few years, some always seem to always be around.

But I thought I had a new favorite song of the sea and find that it is actually documented as older than most.

If you get a chance to hear a version of "Go From My Window"...I think by just about anybody...give it a listen....the first I heard it was Pint and Dale, but it looks as though just about everybody has covered it...

Mingulay, Sailors Prayer (both), and all the ones that are always sung.... just good Music.....

  2. It's been quiet in this forum as late so just thought I would just throw something together for the fun of it.....

Several years ago I had the distinct pleasure of hearing the Corsairs at Silverleaf Ren Faire in Michigan. It seems there has been some changes since then and wonder if anybody could make a comment on their recent reincarnation.....

I also would like to recommend to all of you out there that if you have the chance to see "Pint and Dale" grab on with both hands. This Duo is familiar to alot of the East and West Coast Ren Faire people and they do a number of Maritime fests. Singing traditional songs of the sea, along with newer arrangements of some of the old things and newer songs. William Pint plays Guitar, Octave mandolin and Felicia Dale plays the "real" Hurdy Gurdy, whistles, fiddle...

Not long ago I ran across an old Folkways recording of sea songs(like from the 70's) and found William had contributed to it. This is a wonderfully strong duo and you will be glad you gave them a listen....A couple of my favorite songs from them are "The Wreckers" and "Mary Come Down"(from Hugill). But with something like 13-14 CD's out there is alot of music to choose from....

I realize the "Who's your favorite Group" forum has been done, but if you have a personal favorite, write up a bit about them and let us all know!!!!!

  3. Not so good news................

I received a communique from Hank this afternoon telling us that the November camp has had to be postponed....just not enough people signed up this go-round. There will be another planned soon but will be in the new year....

I will keep everybody up on when it is so if you are of a mind to make the trip you will have plenty of time.

In the mean time if anybody is in Seattle on the last Sunday of any given month let me know.....The Last Sunday Shanty Singers would love to have you join us for good song, conversation, RUM (yes this is an adult sing) and just plain alot of fun...next one is this coming Sunday. I will be hosting so if you are going to be around let me know and I will get you directions.....

good gods, its darkRose! I thought you was about dead out there on the coast. You are missed, my friend, and I hope someday you can make your way back. There's a bottle of rum in it if you get back to these chilly waters.

  6. I will keep all informed as to the scheduled events of this sort....

And if anybody knows of other things like this going on...let me know... We'll get it posted and maybe stir some interest....

  7. As I said I would I would like to throw this out there for anybody that might be interested.

The weekend before Thanksgiving this year myself and Slo Gin will be attending a 4 day musical workshop that is strictly focused on sea shanties.....

The camp is put on by Hank Cramer along with whats looks to be an excellent staff....Hank has been the Shantyman on the Lady Washington and other tall ships he also has a group called "Constellations Crew" that does concerts for the preservation on the USS Constellation that is in Baltimores inner harbor.

While it might be a little late to get registered for this one, this is the 3rd camp in 2 years.....so one should be coming up in the spring.....

As I was reading the forums there are any number of questions, period shanties, sheet music etc.....

There are several historians that are gonna get a workout on those questions.

I realize alot of people will be doing preperations and be getting ready to go to pip....but if you are interested in checking out more about this here is the link

    www.seashantycamp.com

Check it out and if your in the PNW and might be interested...give them a shout.....I am sure there is still room!

When camp is over of course I will write a full report on the goings on.

  10. Well...it's been awhile.....

I seemed to have gone asleep somewhere in the cornfields of Iowa and woke up out here in the Pacific Northwest!

At one time I was a bit of a moderator of this forum with Dutchess (Hi Dutchess!) and after talkin a bit to Stynky have thought I would throw my hand back in.

Actually might have a bit more to offer than before....Since comming out here to Seattle have helped to form a small monthly get together thats called "The Last Sunday Shanty Sing" (guess when it is)... been trying to get our shanty group organized enough to do something ("Storm in a Port"-name used with permission) and hanging around with a number of great shanty singers. (No I am not great---even by association, but love singin them songs)

I will be throwintg some things out there for your persual, and the first one will be a "Shanty Camp" that I will be attending....It is being led by Hank Cramer and people who have attended have said it is fantastic....but more on that later with specifics....

But for now I will just say hi and that it is good to be back!

  13. Calamanco, Callimancoe Woolen textile, plain, striped, checked, or figured and glazed. (1)

A woolen stuff of Flanders, glossy on the surface, and woven with a satin twill and checkered in the warp, so that the checks are seen on one side only; much used in the 18th Century

Found this on the web....seems to have been pretty common...

  14. Hmmmmmm...since I am supposed to be a moderator of this forum should throw in my 2 cents worth....
