  1. For all those pyratical students of period swordplay who turned at some point to the very knowledgeable Patri Pugliese to purchase a hard-to-find manual - it is my sad duty to report that the good Mr. Pugliese finally lost his battle with liver cancer yesterday, Feb. 11. For anyone who never had an opportunity to deal with Patri or meet him in person, he was exactly what you would imagine him to be based on his name (and yes, it was his real name): delightfully unique, a distinctive gentleman, and seemingly visiting from another time period. In his book "The Secret History of the Sword" J. Christoph Amberger called Patri "an institution among sword enthusiasts" and that was no exagerration. He will be sorely missed.
  2. Greetings to you, Mary Diamond. Though it's a wee early in the day for a pint (even for me) I'll take my particular morning coffee. Ray, if you would - a strong coffee with healthy pinches of cinnamon, cloves, and green and black peppercorns. And should anyone ask, I call that a "Back the ---- off, mate - I'm not awake yet" coffee.
  3. The only other piratical figure from the same company that I know of is a Blackbeard figure that, shall we say, leaves a bit to be desired. But it's still fun. A couple of years ago, a friend gave my wife and me the Blackbeard and Anne Bonny figures as a goof. The same company also sells figures such as Edgar Allan Poe, William Shakespeare, and Marie Antoinette (with a removeable head).
  4. Welcome aboard, Mr. Wages. And as long as you keep the skunk-sporran downwind I'll join you in a drink. (I'm still quite new to this forum, but I think you'll find this one very welcoming. As an actor and not a living historian/reenactor I've had some of the same difficulties you mentioned in other forums. Everyone here at the Pub has been great and very willing to address my questions, historical or otherwise).
  5. Mine doesn't really "mean" anything - it's the cover of William Fowler's biography of Silas Talbot. The portrait is one Talbot himself commisioned and still belongs to his descendants.
  6. Welcome aboard - and thanks to you for the drink.
  7. Pleasure to meet you...and since you're buying I'll have the day's first pint. Thanks to you, miss.
  8. Captain M...I have just gone from "interested party" to "sold". It looks great.
  9. I suppose it's really egotistical of me to say that my favorite character actor is me, huh? (Hey...if I don't believe in myself, nobody else will). I do have to give more props to Julian Glover, though. Great classical actor as well. He's done lots of work with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
  10. As weird as it might sound, my day job is being Capt. Silas Talbot. I started playing him for the Freedom Trail Foundation is Boston a couple of years ago. Occasionally I play other characters because of a special request (most often Paul Revere), but 95 percent of the time it's Capt. Talbot. In addtion to leading tours of the Freedom Trail I get to sail on the Liberty Clipper and...best of all...lead the Historic Pub Crawl. Yes, that's right. I get paid to drink beer. My job ROCKS. Other than that, my time is spent acting either onstage or on camera (just auditioned to play Edmund the Bastard in "King Lear" today), doing theatrical fight choreography, film stunt work, or teaching acting/scene study/ stage combat.
  11. Good evening and welcome aboard. A pint of stout, if you please.
  12. ARGH...this is gonna be a tough one. Hope the "eclectisism" doesn't make anyone's head hurt... I'm No Angel- Gregg Allman South Side of the Sky - Yes Heart of the Sunrise - Yes Princes of the Universe - Queen Creep - Radiohead Big Fella - Black 47 I Got Laid on James Joyce's Grave - Black 47 Friends in Low Places - Garth Brooks Lawyers, Guns, and Money - Warren Zevon I should add to this that if I could have "entrance music" it would be the Mozart Fantasia in F Minor...and I want to use the J.S. Bach Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue as underscoring for a swordfight.
  13. Also interesting because I named the "hanger" I use in the historical gigs "Black Sam". But that was more in honor of my boss. At least he'd better feel honored...
  14. Hmm...Sam Bellamy. Which is particularly interesting since I'd thought about playing him if we expand the historical maritime tours in Boston to include GAoP.
  15. Welcome to the pub, sir. And thank you for the tankard. S.Talbot
  16. Wait...the title of this test might lead one to think that there is such a thing as an "ordered" personality. Wow...what a concept. Not that I believe it for a second, mind you.
  17. Welcome aboard. Mr. Smythe. Or is is Mr. Dirty? Whichever you prefer, another stout for Capt. Talbot here. Word of warning - come mealtime, keep a sharp eye on CrazyCholeBlack. Keeps wandering off to the bath with everyone's soup. Can't say why, and I think it best not to ask.
  18. Welcome to the Pub, lad. A pint of Ray's best stout for me. Don't get too upset about buying the first round, it's a crew of the first order here. The favor will soon be returned. S.Talbot
  19. Red Cat...you may be sorry you asked. The paper is an examination of the differing stage directions in the 1597 Quarto and 1623 Folio versions of Richard III comparing them to the historical document called the "Platt" of The Second Part of the Seven Dealy Sins. The argument being that comparison to the Platt (a genuine late 16th Century theatrical artifact) shows that the 1597 Quarto does not come from a theatrical source, but is a reconstruction of the text made by spectators. In fact...it's a PIRATED text. Makes you want to run right out and grab it when it's published, huh?
  20. Now that is my kinda pool! You should invite us all over for a pool party! Shipmate...if I'm accepted, youse can all join me in the pool...or in the hot tub, which will only be filled with water. But the bottles of Tullamore Dew and Midleton will be over there. I'll even start the festivities by sabreing a bottle of Veuve Cliquot. But I'll take no responsibility for the state of anyone's head the next day.
  21. And thanks to you, Lady Snow. Another pint shall never go amiss.
  22. I had a couple of the "Celtic Women" singers on my Freedom Trail walking tour several months ago when they were doing shows in Boston. They were very sweet girls. As for the music...emmm, it's okay. Bit too pop-flavored for my taste, but that's just me. I'm the guy you'll find putting away a pint or three in the corner on seisun night at the Green Briar...or screaming my head off at a Black 47 show.
  23. I have to say this SOMEWHERE...it may as well be here. I just finished a writing sample for a grad school application that has gone through three drafts since last Thanksgiving and caused me lots of sleepless nights and too many days sitting at the computer until my butt was numb. By the end I had a piece that I am quite happy with and I think it proves that I can not only handle academic writing, I can butt heads with the best of 'em. I just got back from turning it all in at the admissions office. Tonight, I'm gonna swim in Guinness.
