Oh, no, no, no.... I drafted the pattern, after that it was all Kate. So you mean Kate's new stays for Kate! -

Or she could just tied the ribbons on the straps a little shorter so they sit a bit higher and more correctly... -

Uhm, how to say this without sounding wrong.. uhmm... Well, there's no way... Cleavage is fine for this period, if you look at period paintings and fashion plates, cleavage is shown in moderation. Now also keep in mind that showing some décollatage (that's French for cleavage) is okay, practical haning out of your clothes was generally not done.... Make sense? They look great on you, they look like they fit well. Greta job! -
I'm probably way too late on this... But I didn't see Mark through out December and the first part of January... Anyways, he bought a brand new red haversack from Weeping Heart while there, and can't seem to find it. If anyone found a new unused red haversack and is willing to return it, I'm sure Mark would be most greatful. Please let me know, as I feel very bad for not having mentioned this sooner.... It was probably lost around the Mercury camp or Silkie's Hide or in that vacinity...

Speaking of Pyrodex... I have had NO END OF TROUBLE with the stuff... In fact I've had so much trouble with using it in my flintlock, I've earned myself the nickname of "wuffer" (and various derivitives) due to how much trouble I have had with my flintlock because of my use of Pyrodex powder. At PiP, someone was kind enough to let me use some of their powder all weekend (thanks again M.A.d'Dogge), and I had absolutely no troubles.... I'll be disposing of the remaining Pyrodex in a safe manner when I can, and from now on I am only buying Goex, or if I can get the brand name of the stuff M.A.d'Dogge had (it was in a white tin with black lettering) I would use that as well.

Ridiculous Poll Thingy to Appease My Wasted Afternoon (RPTtAMWA)

For you sir, I would happily do Poly clothing... But it would be conditional on you starting to do mock surgeries (or real surgeries) and only for the sake that fake (or real) blood would wash out of the poly stuff more easily.... Insincere or not (I kind of agree with you on that, but I am a fellow cynic), I would still prefer the ice cream and candles, I LOVE sandelwood... And the mother-in-law regularly gifts us with nice top quality towels, so the ice cream and smelly stuff would be a welcome change... -
I've had some good luck at Hellmart (Walmart) for wooden bowls and plates, usually between $4 and $8 in some interesting shapes and sizes.

Blair is aware of the theft of images, and the mySpace page and I have read that he is taking every legal recourse he is able.... But Middlesex may not know about this joker stealing their images yet (or maybe they do?).... I've seen this guy get put on moderated status and/or kicked off of a few forums now (mostly F&IW or Rev War), with the exception of maybe letting whoever owns Middlesex know about it, there is naught much else we can do, besides continued vigilance and warners people when we can.

In the ever ongoing research to improve my Red Coat portrayal, I came across this article. I have read this article before, and in fact a great deal of my inspiration for my portrayal came from this article... But this is the first time I have found the article as a web page and not a PDF file on a forum that requires forum access to view. British Regulars in America, 1664-1714 by Lee Offen The rest of the web site if pretty good and worth a look as well. First Captain’s Company - Colonel George Douglas, 1st Earl of Dumbarton's Regiment of Foot, 1660-1685 I also stumled across this on the Pirate Brethren forum... It's a book in 5 parts in PDF format. It is essentiall a 1701 officer's manual. I copied it onto my hard drive and will be printing it out in the very near future. I will be using it to derive musket and military drills from to add more depth to the Red Coat portrayal. (I hope BlackJohn doesn't mind me linking this material here...) The Compleat Gentleman Soldier Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Originally posted On this thread of the Pirate Brethren Forum.

Simplicity "Jack Sparrow" and other mainstream patterns..
michaelsbagley replied to LadyBrower's topic in Crafting Kit
Another thing you may want to do is thoroughly read through the below discussion topics... There is a TON of good information contained in those threads, and if you start directing any additional questions in those threads they will become even more in depth so in two months time when the next person asks those type of questions, even more of them will already be answered. Minimum Garb Standard This is kind of supposed to be an "Authenticity 101" discussion (geared mostly towards men) Female Minimum Garb Standards Same as above, but geared towards women. Top 10 Items for your pirate Kit various opinions and lists of gear/clothing/items those with experience think would be most valuable to a beginner. Hope these help. -
Simplicity "Jack Sparrow" and other mainstream patterns..
michaelsbagley replied to LadyBrower's topic in Crafting Kit
I know this pattern has been debated on this forum at least a few times before, but I honestly can't begin to remember the discussion topic titles to search for them... And I never paid enough attention to those discussions to remember anything useful.... Except that the patterns seem to be a far cry away from accurate. I have the simplicity pattern (for Renn-Faire use), and all of the Reconstructing History patterns to compare them to, as well as over the last several months I have begun to draft my own patterns based on what I have learned from using the Reconstructing History Patterns and extensive review of line drawings from historical costuming books and archaeological reports. I guess the best question to start with is, what look are you going for? A pirate Captain? A crewman? A more gentlemanly pirate? (wearing lots of looted finery) A more rough and tumble man's man working class sailor/pirate? There are lots of opinions as to just exactly a pirate may look, most have some historic justification, but the least flashy and least trodden path is the one in most of people to follow it (IMO). There are online sources for period sketches of clothing patterns, if you are confident in your ability to draft patterns, I guess it wouldn't be too hard to use the Sparrow costume as a base, and then majorly alter them to a more historic line. Or if you can find a copy of the "Cut Of Men's Clothing" by Norah Waugh (or is that one the Janet Arnold book, I always get those two confused), there are plenty of historic patterns sketches in there that you can scale up and alter the sparrow costume to more resemble... Anyways, there is no easy answer to your question, as there are lots of differing opinions, and most of them valid opinions... You relly need to decide which path you want to take and get a bit more specific, then those who are most knowledgeable about the gentlemanl;y look, or the common look, or whatever look you choose will be better able to help you. Cheers -
Now that I am home and can actually view mySpace (the mySpace network is blocked from my company's systems), yeah, this is the guy causing (or trying to cause) havoc.

Being early to mid May... I would suspect the temperature to range in the high 60s or low 70s... Maybe sinking to the 50s at night. So it should be fairly comfortable re-enacting weather, but you may want to pack some warmer clothes and blankets for sleeping. And since you made a point of it, that would be 15 to 20 degrees C, dipping down to 10 to 12 C at night. That of course is average... And of course subject to natures bouts of randomness...

Double fold bias tape is essentially edge binding, but what exactly are you having trouble with? What do you mean you've ripped it out four times? Have you sewn it and not been happy with the results and removed it? Have you been sewing it and pulled too tightly and torn it out by accident? Expand and we'll seee if I or anyone else has some helpful advice to give. Cheers -

Unfortunately, one needs to create a User ID and log into Living History Worldwide (it's basically a mySpace/Facebook style social network for re-enactors). I found this out last week when I tried to send a friend a link to something on there. Maybe the wife can post her pics here as well? I'll leave that up to her... Or if you feel up to it, either you or Silas could create an account on LHW in order to have a look. Kate could better speak for herself here, but as I am online all day, and her only in the evenings... She seemed to really enjoy working with silk. Specially the silk thread. There was the initial oh my god what if I miscut this valuable fabric thing, but once you get past that, I think her words were "It's a dream"... Or something along those lines. Anyways, hope this helps. Cheers

Okay, the ballots are in... And the date is SET! This will go down on the weekend of May 9th and 10th! Mojito, we'd love to have you and any of the other Sacred Hearts that would be willing to come up! I think I have sent invites to Fayma the last time or two we did the Santa Maria to-dos (or at least I hope I did), but if you and the others would be willing to join us that would be awesome!!! Perkeo, really hope you can make it back. It would be good to see Efera and Grizz as well! If half of those interested show, this event is likely to double in size from the last time... and if most or all of those interested show, this is likely to grow to be a pretty huge event.

Happy Birthday mate! Hope you have a great one.

I was admiring the avatar as well... It's kind of funny, I just re-watched most of the series a few months ago (Twin Peaks, for those who aren't sure)... I started by getting the dvds from NetFlix, but I found that the series was online, so I stopped netFlix-ing them and just watched them streaming on the computer so I wouldn't have to wait days between discs. Awesome series... Not as cool as Firefly, but damn cool series as well.

I haven't been following this thread very closely, but I thought that powder horns were not in favour for re-enactment firing. I thought it was almost a "standard" (as standard as anything gets in re-enacting) that powder horn were only worn as decoration and that rolled cartridges were almost used exclusively. Or is your lot a bit of an exception to the rule Hawkyns? Not trying to pass judgement, I just think I may have a bit of a misconception that I would prefer to have cleard up. Cheers

Sjöröveren, there are no stupid questions... And trust me, I'll happily give as much advice as you want or need (and probably some you don't as well ) What step number is the instruction to fold at that you are unsure about? I can have a peek at my copy of the pattern when I get home in about 2 hours and get back to you with a fuller explanation, if that will help. Cheers, and if you are willing or feel like, please post pics of your progress, I like to see how others proceed with their projects.
