  1. Yes, we know a lot of the same people... I wasn't speaking in absolutes... there are some folks who do step "out of the box"... But as a generalization, in comparison to other eras I have re-enacted, the flexibility is a lot less in the Golden Age.
  2. I think one thing that is not mentioned here is women dressed as women.... while women who were pirates most often dressed as men (and were rare), and women who dress as men for reenacting is almost common... there is a lot of room in reenactment for women dressed as women. They may not be specifically pirates per se... but there were a lot of women who would have interacted with pirates (and not just "wenches"). I think the pirate re-enactment scene is one of the worst for people being willing to step out of the box and portray something other than pirates (or privateers, or other nautical personas). To drive this point home....A few years ago I started putting together a period correct military uniform for the pirate era. While a number of folks have over the years since then expressed interest in the portrayal, myself and one other guy (Matt from eastern PA) are still the ONLY correct military reenactors for the period... everyone else just borrows later period military reenactors when they can get them. Or uses "militia" which equates to pirates who were willing to pretend to be on the other side for the day or duration of the event.

  4. You and I wake up in a small, purple Volkswagen Jetta together. We're wearing Stormtrooper costumes and have a Jack o'Lantern, a digital camera, five 10-sided die, and a large jar of peanut butter. USING THREE WORDS ........ What would you say to me? NOTE: IF you comment, YOU MUST COPY and PASTE this to YOUR STATUS ..... So I may comment on yours as well. Be a good egg and play along. (3 words is harder than you think!)

      Am I pregnant?!?!?

  5. As it stands, it is looking like I might get to be there all day Saturday and/or Sunday... (although I will be on call and may have to vanish on no notice)
  6. A couple of things.... The main discussion for this event is being done on a private (closed) Facebook group, but we are not too strict about who is in or out... So if you are seriously considering coming, and are on Facebook and wish to be a part of these discussions, please do contact me so I can get you added. One thing under heavy discussion is food. Over the past few events, our chefs have started to feel a little hard done by, so we are seriously considering dialing the food back to cold lunch (fruit, bread, cheeses, hard meats etc.) and not cooking a supper leaving everyone up to their own devices to go out for supper at their own whim (or cook for themselves). If we find there are enough folks coming that will depend on food being cooked or prepped at the ship for supper, we will try and make arrangements, but we will also push heavily to have the burden of labour for those efforts onto those who require that accommodation. We're really trying hard to not be unwelcoming on this point, but the burden of labour versus the amount of folks who need has become seriously unbalanced over the last few events, and we are getting burnt out on it. Any questions? Comments? Let me know!

  8. Agreed on just about all points... Not allowing battle re-enactments is fine if that is how they want to be... Stating the reasons such as preserving potential unfound artifacts, and some of the other reasons would have been fine... But ripping on re-enactors who do battle re-enactments as strongly as they did in that video crosses lines. Stating that injuries from canon fire and other black powder use during battle re-enactments is almost as idiotic as stating that no one should be allowed out of their home during a lightning storm as it is documentable that people have been hit by lightning. NPS's stance is justifiable from a standpoint, but their choice to state their stance for neutral reasons (which would be fine if it had stopped there) and then continuing to rip on a large and varied group of people who volunteer great amounts of their personal time and resources is sickening.
  9. No, I don't feel that way... But apparently the NPS does (National Park Service). Saw this posted on Frontier folk and though it might be worth sharing here for discussion as well. This policy has always been in place (well at least for longer than I have been re-enacting), but this is the first time that policy has gone from just being there (and inconvenient) to a publicized item of negative propaganda. I've long been wary of the NPS and have generally avoided having anything to do with them, but this video has made the line in the sand a down right battle line for me.
  10. Mission shared this on Facebook, but I thought I would repost here for everyone... this is an article by the local newspaper (local to the event)... it has a lot of great pictures of the event and the site. There are some great shots of Rusty Spike, Mark G, and other familiar faces in there. Those who missed thus one missed the beginning of what will be a great event. http://www.whas11.co...-127664788.html And the Bagley's photos from the event (mostly taken by Kate, you can pretty much bank on the not-so-good ones having been taken by me) http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150249179182023.320680.697857022&type=1
  11. Kids have always been welcome to the Santa Maria events, and always will be. So little G would be a welcome addition. I might even wear my tiara if it will make more comfortable...
  12. So I guess it is less than 6 weeks away... The 4th Annual Talk Like a Pirate Day weekend on the Columbus, OH Santa Maria.... This will be the 8th (I can't believe I have done so many of these) pirate weekend on the Columbus, OH Santa Maria reproduction. Where does the time go? General Event information on the following web page... http://www.re-enactmentevents.com/SantaMaria/SantaMaria.php Or for information more catered to re-enactors and pirate participants visit this web page ... http://www.re-enactmentevents.com/SantaMaria/Participants.php There are Facebook pages also... Please contact me to get added to the participant page, otherwise the public event page can be found http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=159786114096447.
  13. You may want to post this over on the Frontier Folk forum as well. There is a lot more late 18th century re-enactors there, so you're potential market would be much broader. Also frocks and smooth bores come up on the trading post section there so you can get a better idea of what the current rates are like... unfortunately I am seeing a lot of great items selling for much less than they are worth because of the current state of the economy.. but I wish you the best of luck with this! Who knows you might get a good trade offer on it? Cheers http://frontierfolk.net/phpBB/index.php
  14. William is just made of awesome that way... reminding us of events he can't make it to. Although. Do wish he could be there.
  15. Im not trying to ignore anyone, but in the last few weeks I have been on the road for work a ton more than I have been home (ive spent a lot of time in Florida and California), I've had to squeeze in a trip back to canada because of the passing of my grandmother, and in all that I have been trying to find some time to have a real life as well. Sadly, I will likely be a very scarce person for the rest of this summer. Edit... I suppose I really should have taken the extra few seconds to let you know that yes they did arrive safely, and they AWESOME!!! Thank you very much for sending those. Pictures of Lob all jotted out will be forthcoming... but with all that is going on ib my life right now, it may be a while.
  16. Now that GoF mentioned the other barrel topic... didn't someone (like Patrick Hand) post a scanned image with directions on how to replace metal hoops with willow ones in that thread? Try this link... I think I managed to find it on my pocket device!
  17. You gotta get your story straight.... It was the year before you swear I wasn't there.
  18. I'll be there again.. it'll be my fourth year running on this one... which is a personal record I think.
  19. The location is no secret, I just am clueless as to it's proper name... as I have heard it refered to by a few different titles... but it is in Charleston Indiana, about 30 mins from Louisville KY
  20. Yes, same dates. No specifics yet, we are still working on the details. We wanted to have more information before saying anything at all, but between a small information leak and wanting to head off any bad feelings some may have had for not being told sooner, we had to post this sooner rather than later. All information will be revealed in plenty of time. Plenty of time for folks to have the time to make a fair and informed decision, but rushing details we don't have right now will not give folks a fair chance to make the best decision for themselves yet. Unofficially - I am skeptical about showers, running water is likely, open to the public: yes, but it will likely be low public attendance and a mostly self indulgent event for re-enactors have have fun amongst themselves. Glad you like the name (I'm partial to it as well), sorry you never made Paynetown... While we are losing the lake, we are trying to keep the spirit of that event alive in this new one... Just without the site working against the organizer(s). Thanks for the good wishes.
  21. This is an IMPORTANT Announcement concerning this event, please ensure this news is passed on to whomever you know it may concern. First the bad news (there is good news). The Indiana State DNR/Paynetown SRA have canceled the event. Basically after five years of treating the event organizers like crap, despite this event creating quantifiable extra revenue for the site, they gave the event the boot. So the event is canceled. Now the good news. Anyone and everyone who paid their registration will be refunded in full. Please give Nate a couple of weeks to get this done. This cancellation, did come as a bit of a shock, so please be patient. Now the better news. While "Pirates Of Paynetown" is canceled, Nate along with some of the other organizers and supporters of the "Pirates Of Paynetown" event are putting together an alternative event at another location. Because the event will be no where near Paynetown, and considering how poorly Paynetown handled this parting of paths, the new event will have a very different name. The new event will also vary in concept some. Because a new site at a lake was not readily available, the nautical angle will be lessened. Pirates will still be welcomed at the new event, but the new event will be all about all the "bad boys" (and "bad girls") of history. Pirates, bandits, rebels, highwaymen, etc. The proposed name for the event is "Brigands Grove". The event will still be a historic event, so a good effort on historical authenticity is still mandatory (as in the source for your portrayal needs to be better than a film, any film), but this isn't a strictly juried event. One downside, is the new site only has a stream. While the stream is big enough to handle smaller boats, some of the mid-size or larger boats, or boats with deeper draughts will not be able to navigate the stream. On the plus side, the new site is dramatically larger than the Paynetown SRA, and has a great deal more room, trees for shade.... And most importantly.... WILL BE FREE TO ATTEND !!! We are still working out some of the details of the new event, but it will be the same dates as Paynetown (this year), and still in the state of Indiana (just not on Indiana DNR land). The new location is about an hour south of Paynetown SRA, so it may be a bit of a longer drive for some (sorry about that), but it will be a shorter drive for most. More posts will be forthcoming as details are worked out. Please feel free to offer suggestions, as the new event will be for historical re-enactors, by historical re-enactors, on land and at a location that is both supportive and friendly to re-enactors!!! All feedback and suggestions are welcome, and if you feel you could contribute to help run this new event (although we have a pretty good size group helping already) please contact Nathanael (HistoryFanatic on this forum). Sorry about the bad news, but I hope you find the good news part as exciting as I do!
  22. I'll try and post a AAR later (like in the next few days)... but a HUGE congrats to Cheeky Actress for being this years contest winner for the trip to the Caymans! That makes the re-enactors two for two on winning! I couldn't be more proud of how well the varied re-enactors who have cone together over the last two years have done!
  23. Yes, that is my home address... As for pics, well there are none yet.... But as this coming weekend is an event weekend, and Lob will be out with his new toys, I am guessing come Monday or Tuesday there will plenty of pics.
  24. HUH? Because a pirate without treasure is like a monkey without a spatula! Lob's new armaments arrived either early this week, or late last week (I was out of town, so who can say)... And they are awesome! They fit Lob well, and are a rather striking matched set! If Master Alan would like to contribute to the monkey's delinquency, then who am I to object... In fact, I would have to support that idea %110!!!
  25. Capt. J, historyfanatic (Nathanael) hardly ever checks into the pub... In my experience, he also does not confirm registrations as he has to deal with dozens (if not hundreds)... But if you are really concerned, the best course of action is always to contact him directly via direct means, not a forum post. Thanks!
