Oh, wet!
Still and all, an enormous amount of fun, weather and all. If you want to have a good time, you'll find it no matter what. I feel bad for the vendors who lost out on local business for the people that fled the event. And, of course, the producer of the show, who must have been very distressed to see the attendance gush away as the weather continued to be bad.
Me, I have a flooded basement that I have to go continue to vacuum out.

It was wonderful to see everyone again this year. No less busy for not directing, what with the hit and run singing and shelter singing and all, but still great to get everyone together again!

I am happy to say that Bounding Main will be performing at Port Washington Pirate Festival and we will have our new CD, "Going Overboard" available for sale.
If you can't wait you can pick up a copy on CDBaby or on Apple iTunes.
We will have copies of our Operation Share the Shanties CDs for the wounded US Military personnel that we'll be visiting in the Landstuhl Military Hospital in Germany in August. If you want to sponsor a gift CD with a personal message to one of our wounded boys you can do so any time during the day.
Plus we'll be singing a barrel-full of fun and exciting new songs!

Dean, will there be a gallery of pics again? and I was wondering if there could be a list of ships crews on the site.. give a little love back, so ta speak.. maybe a links site or harbor listing or something. I do see a LOT of pics and slide shows if you Google the name. People love ya!

Well, you'll have to bring that up to Sally, as I stepped off the committee this year because of all of the pre-event business I need to attend to for our little European tour in August.
As for the web site: last year and this year the producer chose to manage the web site herself, but she's also managing everything else about the event and may not be free to respond directly. I'd try passing on requests for the site to Scuttle Sally who will pass them on to the producer of the show.
We always post our pics of the event on our photo gallery, plus whomever else sends us pics. (It is Bounding Main heavy, naturally . . .)

There isn't anything on the website about local hotels or the bay cruises this year. Any one know anything?
Scuttle Sally has the info on the tall ship situation, but she's incommunicado very shortly for PirateCon. I don't know why they're not posting anything about the local hotels, unless none of them are sponsoring the event. The Holiday Inn refuses to sponsor because they don't have to, being so close they're guaranteed a full house. The Country Inn & Suites was purchased by new owners JUST before the event last year and they did NOT honor the comped rooms agreed to by the previous owners - so they're not friends of ours. We stayed at the Super 8 in Grafton and it was fine. There are other hotels within 8 miles of the site that are all reasonable and give you everything you need: a flat place to snooze, a shower and a place to stow your gear.

I've looked into getting a gig in town for that event but so far I've turned up nothing. I'll dig into it more after our trip to Europe this August, in preparation for 2009.

The review for the CD won't be in the Winter issue (it's on press at the moment) nor will it be in the Spring issue (reserved for PyrateCon band music). . .but it WILL be reviewed and appear in the Summer issue!

I have no news on the event, as I'm no longer involved with the committee, but I did hear an interesting snippet of information: The Port Washington Pirate Festival has become the town's second largest event of the year. This is impressive, as the venerable "Fish Days" has been a fixture in Port for decades!

The census is winding down, and the number of Bounding Mainiacs is approaching 400. Wow!
Going Overboard, Bounding Main's latest CD, is scheduled to be finished The second week of December! This is our most collaborative work to date, and includes a few original songs, a few live takes, a few ballads, and lots and lots of fun! We have worked hard to make this our best CD yet, and we sincerely hope you are pleased with it.
We distribute via CDBaby, but it takes them about 30 days to process new CDs, which means you can't get it from them before Christmas, so if you want to order a copy directly from us, write to me a maggiehannington@hotmail.com and I'll email you an order form.
As soon as I have the CD's in hand, I will send your very own copy/ies out to you! Shipping time should be about 3-4 days, but in this season, you'll want to give yourself lots of time. I will send out an email, confirming when I have sent your CD. (If it seems to be taking a lot of time, feel free to contact me to make sure I have received your check.)

... is there a Forum or some chat list somewhere for the "Entertainers" (bloody well hate that word) to discuss about Port Washington? Variety of reasons, I suppose.

There is a page on Tribe: Port Washington Pirate Festival. The discussion is moderated by Bilgemunky.
I like Tribe okay, but it goes down pretty frequently: be warned.
As for terminology, could we not gather all people attending in a visible fashion, actors, reenactors, variety acts and musicians as "Participants," versus "Guests?" That's not official, just a suggestion.

Lady B, and all of interest: I have worked at the Minnesota Ren Festival for the last 5 years as a member of the cast. I have also worked at the Sioux Falls south Dakota Ren Faire and Bristol Faire as a guest performer. What I do is mostly interact directly with the patrons including children (I have a game called "The Hurricane" that I set up for kids ages 2 to 10 [of course we don't exclude anyone, I've had adults play]). I also do stage combat but that may be out of bounds for Port Washington (laws and such). It appears that my group "the Pyrates of Portobello", may not be attending Sioux Falls this year so I thought it may be fun to offer my services to you folks in Port Washington. I lived in Milwaukee for over 10 years and still think of Wisconsin as home. And I can place a couple of folks from the lists here on my resume if you need character references. Just an idea, it's okay veto as I imagine you get plenty of help.

Greetings, friends. Dean Calin here. I stepped out of the entertainment director position for 2008 as Bounding Main is running its fund-raising campaign to travel to Festival Maritim in Bremen, Germany in August of 2008.
I saw that it was recently announced that Tom Charney, who played Captain Joseph Cotton, the hero of the scenario, has stepped up to the position. I know he will do a wonderful job.
Any inquiries about the festival, whether vendors, entertainment, accommodations can be directed to the festival producer, Kim McCulloch at admin@portpiratefestival.com. She will relay inquiries to her staff as is appropriate.
As of this date I am not aware of any performance groups that have received confirmation one way or the other for 2008, including Bounding Main. If we're hired back, I look forward to seeing everyone again - and perhaps this year actually having a little time to VISIT with people!

Taking a few members of the crew to the Bristol Faire on August 11th and maybe the 12th. Any chance we'll see any of you?
Bounding Main will be performing just a few miles away at the Kenosha Days of Discovery-Tall Ships event. This won't be as immersive as the Port Washington Pirate Festival but there will be tall ships and sea shanty singers such as David HB Drake, Tom & Chris Kastle and, of course, Bounding Main. You can see the event schedule here.
Bounding Main WILL be at Bristol the weekend of August 18-19, and it would be wonderful to see our friends from the Pyracy Pub out there!

Port Washington - a charming little town, and then there were PIRATES!
Mary Diamond - thank you so much for your very kind words! You folks were all so amazing. We may have had thousands of locals, but the reenactors were the real "color" that splashed the fun and amazement around. I have to say that so many of you had such incredible garb! Sterling's personal affectations are above and beyond! So fun!
Wasn't that "Pirates Meeting Room" set incredible? Joel Telaco's team from MoonHowler did a lot of the set dressing, that being one of the best pieces. I'm only sorry we didn't get a chance to take advantage of it.
May I please post your images from your post to our Photo Gallery? I will credit you, of course (PM me if you want me to use your mundane name.)

I'm still decompressing after the event.
Thank you all so very much for coming out to this festival. I hope you all had a good time - despite the weather! I apologize for not being able to spend more time visiting with all of you, but between the scenario shows and my own shows with Bounding Main I was hard-pressed for a spare moment. There was so much else I wanted to do and the time just raced by too fast.
I'd very much appreciate any feedback you'd care to offer.

I've been doing a lot of research on this topic for an article for one of the two extant pirate magazines.
Strictly speaking there are NO pirate sea shanties. To be a stickler for the history, there are maritime songs still around that date from as far back as Elizabethan times, but they're not "shanties," per se. The sea shanty form dates after 1840 and ends about 1930. (Richard Henry Dana wrote about maritime work songs in Two Years Before the Mast but never referred to them as shanties.) The golden age of piracy is generally considered to have run from about 1650 through 1720; there is no overlap between the two sets of dates.
But certainly there were still pirates between 1840 and 1930 and as all pirates were sailors they would have sung shanties themselves during that time. Interestingly, since we've seen that sailors tunes are often taken from the shore and given a maritime treatment, the musicians aboard Teach's ship were as like to be playing rustic versions of Pacabel and Scarletti tunes as anything else!
