1. Yes a very fun event was had..hopefully by all.

We have tons of pics to share and to be honest, it would take a couple hours to post them all, especially since it appears we can only post one at a time...What's up with that by the way?....However they are posted on the Forsaken site if interested.

I will however see if it's possible to load in bulk???

  2. I will also reiterate much of what is being said.

My first introduction came from use during a WIld West reenactment. Here, pyrodex was NOT allowed because it was proven to not fully break up and sometimes become a firey little spitball. Again, like I said... Pyrodex did not fully ignite and dissipate.

SO the Only choice that was acceptable was Goex or the "new" Elephant powder at the time.

AFter that one of my shooting pards in Cowboy Action Shooting, tried using the preformed and premeasured loads... I'm not even going to get started there!

OK so needless to say, we ended up plundering every gunshop and hardware store(yes some places still carry powder) in the area! You can also occasionally buy or barter some at Civil war events!

The last and in some cases the most practical is to get together with a buddy or two and buy a box or crate or how ever the sell it, then drive where you need to. You could also work somethig out with another reenactor who's not from the area but is planning to attend the same event.

    Just a suggestion

  3. I've shot 2F in both my flintlock and snaphance, it's a bit too course - I've always thought of it more as cannon powder. Given your piece though, the caliber and payload - it's totally understandable.

I think most of us here shoot 3F. Except for special cases, I don't think most of us use wadding during reenactments – makes a mess of the field and can become a potential projectile.

Just for the record, I'd like to reiterate what Mr. Stinky of the Tudor has said about wadding. It really becomes a safety issue especially with large charges. The last thing you want is a paper spitball shooting into a crowd.

I will however admit that we have used cream of wheat and florest foam for percussion pistols during civil war and wild west reenactments. Of coarse this envolves the safety percautions and staging/safety angles for the wild west events. We are however using light loads and the foam and wheat dissipate immediately.

  4. I have a Loyalist Arms 1690 doglock pistol in .64 calibre that I would like to possibly rework. It is however my first experience with a flintlock piece. I've had the lock out of the stock, and I've had the barrel out, and the ramrod holder out, and the butt cap off. I have not yet tried to remove the trigger and trigger guard yet though. Not difficult to take apart and put back together at all so far. However, I have not attempted to take ANY parts off of the lock yet since there are 3 different springs and I don't know what kind of tension they put on the other parts while trying to put it back together. I do not have a spring vise yet for the main spring.

Loyalist Arms told me the stock is made of rosewood. A friend told me that there probably were stocks made of rosewood back then. Any know? I would have preferred English walnut, but it was made in India, and I think rosewood is a more common wood there. Is a stock in English walnut just like this rosewood stock available somewhere? I don't know how to inlet a stock for the lock, so that could be very tough.

But anyway, what kind of reworking of parts do you suggest be done to this piece to make it look and function much better?

    -Tar Bucket Bill

By God Bill is that you??!

And though I usually don't pirate a man's thread, it's been waaay to damn long!

To be honest I thought you were fish food or lying in an alley somewhere with the rats knawing on man parts... I'm glad to see I was wrong!

  5. Hard to believe but it was in Key Largo, the Viceroy's and my home. Neither of us were involved, He left and I stayed as a member of the crowd to observe safety. After describing what transpired we both wanted a video of what happened to show others as to what not to do.

Neither of us were asked to work the event

That was without a doubt the best thing you could have done!

Regardless of the presentation and my envolvement, I have no problem stepping aside just to act as crowd control and safety.

I hate to be rude and group folks together... But as we all have seen, some spectators are litterally like cattle! It's almost like you need to herd them behind the safety lines and then even stand there to make sure the heard doesn't break through the gate! I've seen spectators just wander from the crowd into the engagement area, oblivious to where they are and some times not even caring.

BTW: the two folks I mentiond above had hearing aids told me they couldn't hear me yelling and were trying to find an open path through the crowd.

OK so watch this video and enjoy... er I mean cringe!

I swear I hear whiskey bottles falling to the ground and dueling banjos in the background!!

  6. Call me a stick-in-the-mud, but what is sharpened steel doing around spectators (historically-minded or Disney-minded) anyway? Maybe it is the old Boy Scout in me, but if I have a functioning tool unsheathed - knife or axe or sword - it is to perform a specific task. Anyone not directly involved in the completion of that task has no business within range of the tool, period.

I couldn't agree with Mr. Bottles more!

I fact in some cases, we're making the same point. SO I'll ad my two shillings since I'm up and can't sleep anyway!!

Just two wekends ago.. belay that! Three weekends ago I was doing an UNCivil War demo and I decided to peace tie my saber... Sure as Hell, while I was talking to the spectators infront of me a juvelile hand reach out from behind the crowd and grab the saber on my display. As I raced to retrieve said weapon (Remember even blunt objects can become a weapon, of which you are liable) I saw the little vermin face off with the rest of his ilk and attempt to draw the weapon.

Now in the past for my demos, I never really considered that anyone would have the nerve to attempt such a thing, especially with they're parents standing right there. But something in the back of my head told me that I should have that weapon peace tied and do so for eternity... And such was an juvenile, (yet serious)accident avoided. Never again will I allow such a incident to unfold regardless of the outcome.

Now being a stickler or not.... remember! All it takes is ONE civilian to be injured during an event and you may not only find yourself in court, but the event might fold due to bad PR and City repercussions... Or they just might not invite you back...

With that being said... we're all not perfect! Simple as that! We also try to make the public happy and include them, rather than exclude them. We also have our own personal level of safety that we live by.

In "some" cases..... you may see something that is insanely unacceptable and I would hope that someone would step in... NO! Run in and stop the situaltion before tragedy strikes.

Have fun everyone.. just be safe.

    Here's to you!

  7. Hail the Crewe,

    know me by my images below;

We'll either get along famously, or NOT.

    Mad Zan

    Love the pics Zan!

Especially the shot on the bottom!

Many a modern pirate can look the fop.. but I always thought that to capture the working sailor stands out above the rest!

BTW: I can't believe your slops look dirtier than mine in the pic below....I guess, I'll have to either do more work or just hit the bottle and wallow in more filth??

  8. 253766_227137453965811_100000086757713_971548_7007294_n.jpg

WAY out of GAOP but STILL a pirate - er, I mean privateer.

1586 Drake's Raid on St. Augustine, Florida. Jerkin by Liam, hand sewn breeches by ME! (my first completed piece of clothing)

    Excellent impressions!

It makes me want a matchlock!

  9. and for no apparent reason, a annoyingly flexible man with a monkey! laroon_0017.jpg

I hate it when this happens!

I guess sometimes you wake up and the wrong side of the bed???

BTW: try doing that in latchet shoes... I'd be making a face like that too!

  10. Sorry for multiple posts

anyway I found this modern picture picture with the title Soldier of the British independent companies in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, between 1698 and 1717

I think in early 1700s those bajonets were changed to better ones but it seems to me that soldiers in many colonies were pretty similar if they were independent companies and this modern image has red waistcoat :P and I guess that that is the tricorn with that white piping so I finally understand what it means ^_^

but here is said that there were green cuffs what ??????

I love to see where this post has gone in the last year or so.

In all actuality and though I cannot prove one or the other, this is exactly what I personally would expect from a milita.

I say this because I doubt that even though militas would like to emulate the regulars, I would think that in many cases they worked with what they had. Even similar jackets and hats or even just leather gear would be considered uniformity and well looked upon.

I'm also wondering if perhaps a wealthy individual would finance the venture and thereby pay for the uniforms and leather gear for personal status??

Oh and just for the record... This is what I based my original impression on... I figured that the brown coat (with removeable black coffs that I never got to use) and black hat with white trim is so basic that along with my waist belt and my ammunition pouch..(Thanks again my dear Mr. Bagsley!) I could use the jacket for multiple impressions or loan the equipment out as needed.

BTW: As many will agree, this guy even stands like me... Yeah I'm a slacker!

  11. THis is an excellent ono the 1st weekend of August!

I say this not only because myself and others who didn't make the last Pike will also be attending... But for the simple reason that we have the very best location with shade and grass and only a few yards away from the lake.

If you're not believin' me, just take a look at the picture below!

It's just as much fun as any far away beach. But at least here you don't have to worry about some big fish biting you in half!

Which is a good thing... or so I've been told??

  12. Well done mate!

I'm almost in every bleeding month!

BTW: the shore party image is stil the very best I've ever been in!

We should really start making plans for 2013!

I know you have some pics already... but we should also take to planning more during Pike this year!

  13. Yes this was a lit of fun! And though the rev war guys won...(and rightly so, IMHO!) as the Mad Dog barked, it was a tough crowd! But I will also say that the gibbit and the stocks made this the best display we've had..

But the truth be told, this isn't just a pretty pretty for the inside of a convention hall, by rather what we set up and live in for events!

By God, Tyburns Last Drop has withstood heavy rains and Port Washington tornados... of which we had as much fun during the storm as during the main event itself!

But as far as the convention, there was great people and it was a great event!

Even with a strutting peacock like Mad Dog being there!

  14. Just to make it clear... I am violently ashamed to have missed this event!

The only reason that any riff-raff in the area should miss this event, is if they were dead or in jail... And If you're in jail... you damn well better BREAK OUT!

Lord knows that if I can do it, so can you!

    ]

  15. If you've never attended an event in full garb before make sure to bring plenty of bottled water and sunscreen with you. It gets really hot dresed as a pirate during the spring and summer

As someone who's never re-enacted, I'm curious: why is this? Given that pirates had to live and work all day under a hot Caribbean or Red Sea sun as often as not, why would they wear very hot clothes?

Well, that question might be better suited to the "Captain's Twill" area, but it also applies here....

    So my two cents worth.

It depends on what you are doing. If you are going for a more pirate themed event or festival... Then dress for comfort and to be showy.

But for more historical re-enactment, then it would be more advisable to wear your waistcoats/weskits and if the temperature warrants your sailor's coat. People throughout history have dressed inappropriately by modern standards for comfort. It is remarkable what societal pressures apply to cultures throughout the world at various points in history. Even today there are plenty of cultures around the world that mandate full coverage despite the local temperatures and heat. Make sense?

I completely agree with my good friend Michael. I'll also add a couple suggestions that may have been mentioned because I'm too lazy to check all the past replies.

At faires, you have rules and laws for behavior that should be followed out of curtesy to the performers and the public. You really don't have to be historically correct, because to be honest, the typical faire goer won't know the difference anyway. Here is where you can be creative But NEVER and I mean NEVER try to take part in a skit or try to harass and or show disrespect to a performer. This is not your playground so don't crap in their sandbox. Bottom line is have fun, but behave yourself.

At historical events, you should tdo some research or get advice from the folks that have been trying to do more PFC

To be honest, there is no way that any one can do a totally "Period Correct" impression... (Get it? PC.) So in many cases we have to settle for PFC which if you read between the lines is Pretty F'n Close!

This means that you do what you can to make your impression as close as "practical" or "possible" without making youself miserable or breaking yoru bank. Rember this is suppose to be fun. So don't make yourself crazy trying to be perfect.

Now at historical type reenactments, you have two issues to address. Are you taking part or are you not. If you are taking part, you would expect the organizers to have prior knowledge of your impressions and behavior, which is more than likely why you were invited to begin with.

Make yourself as usefull as possible. Everything from staged fighting to helping crowd control so no one gets hurt is important.

Note: Spectators can totally be like cattle and have no clue where they are and sometimes don't enen care.

Anyway make yourself useful to the director of reenactors so that they know what you are capable of and how they can use you. Don't just stand around! Mannequins can do the same job and anyone can hold up a wall, so get involved. But be safe!!!

OK that's enough, and just for the record this is more that I have written in a reply for a couple years. So even if you think I'm full of it, these suggestions are exactly that. But if one of my suggestions help you, it was well worth the read.

    Take care and be safe

  16. I would rate this event as one of the most enjoyable I have been to in a very long time. Everyone seemed to have an awesome time (kind of hard not to, when just about everyone was blind drunk when we were not demo-ing in the park).

Pictures are abounding around Facebook, but I managed to edit down some of the video footage I got into this fun little clip...

I'm already starting to plan and plot ideas for this one for next year.... :D

  17. OK so I need aheads up as to who is going and what we want to do for skits and presentations.

We could do a simple servant auction

    Weapons and sword demos

How about a "FAKE" pirate trial.... as we all know pirates use to conduct fake trials for fun...with false witnesses and charges and all that guff...this could be a fun alternative??? Perhaps at the end, the REAL militia arrives and arrests everyone???

    Simple easy cheesy???

Anyway, Kathy is looking for numbers and an idea as to what we have planned....

Yep, just got the word... It's actually Aug 6th, 7th and 8th this year!!

Now I have to beg for a change of vacation time... Aaargh!!!!!

Hope folks can put it on they're schedules!!

    Rats

  18. Excellent!!

I'll float out in a barrell with my blunderbuss...that'll give us three boats!!

    Kinda?

    Getting closer to Ohio Santa!!!!

    When arrrr folks showing up??

    ...brownie bites!?!?!?!?

I'm hoping to put one or both boats in the water after work Friday. I'll be hanging around the ship after that.

speak up and let's see the list of brave and foolhearty souls??

Rats! Good to hear from you again!!!

There is a list of those from the Pub considering going in this post, but the master list has almost 60 names on it (which I can't fully share  ). That said, real life tends to trim the list by around 30 to 40 percent (in my experience with most events).... Which still leaves us with likely almost 40 folks coming!

So are you coming alone? Any chance you can drag young Chuckton with you? Or anyone else? It'll be great to see you again man!

    DSCF3205.JPG

Note to Rats - We have your barrel. If you do as we say it will not be harmed. Proceed to the Santa Maria event and wait for further instructions.

  21. I doubt that mags would make it. But I will try to drag the kid along...After all...we might run into some zombie Amish and need to throw the kid out as bait!!

Also my buddies Tar Bucket Bill and Blunderbuss Blaine plan to make it. And a couple others from the Russian 95th might make the trip also!!

contact me off line. I'm kicking around ideas for raffle items... I'll finally get to use my Bagsley Bag!!

    I plan to misbehave!
