I am a Lakota Sioux from South Dakota.I am a tribal dancer,I'm also an artist and work with leather, painting, sculptures and beadwork. The picture I use as an avatar is my actual photograph.<br>I'm very educated in Native American history and happy and proud of my heritage.
  1. SilverWolf grins somewhat at the pirate before him."Was'te kola"!Then turning back to his pipe while enjoying the warmth of the fire.Thinking of the buffalo hunt season coming up soon.
  2. A tall dark native sneaks in through a back door.Silently he makes his way toward the fire place.Rolls out a blanket and sits down to warm himself.Pulling out his pipe he loads it with tobacco and reaches for a stick and lights the pipe.Waving the smoke over his head and shoulders slowly. It's a peaceful place to relax and get to know some of the pirates in the room.
  3. I know that RumbaRue. Nor am I trying to be rude or inconsiderate of your views and observations on Native Americans. And like anything else there are people who are not really Native American but, portray themselves at the Pow wows and away from them as such.Again I'm taking it all in as if I were sitting in a classroom full of pirates.Listen and learning and doing my own research to compare and come up with the history behind it all. As I stated in the first portion of this topic.I plan on getting all I can from you,the internet and any other resorces I can find to gain some knowledge on this topic.I really do appreciate the patience shown here in helping me better understand.I'm getting it I think so far.I'm also having fun talking to you about it to.Thanks!
  4. Let me say and make it very clear to you that I as an individual do not have negative feelings toward the white man for his trespasses of the past.I do what I do to tell the other side of the historical facts from our point of view.I have many white friends to many to name and number. There's really no need to try and "defend" what's going on in this forum.I already understand that it's done in "fun".I already mentioned this. It may be entertaining for those who watch the dances but, again my people do not dance to entertain the crowds. We do it to "educate" people of our ways and culture. Another thing nothing I do comes from something I "think"is accurate.I can not vouch for the people you are talking about by I can vouch for those who belong to the Lakota Counsil of the Eight Tipi tribes.I do not wear bells and trinkets. All of my outfits are home made from scratch and are 100%authentic.You can not come to these conclusions by something you saw someone else do.And yes we also sell jewelry that is from this century as well. After all this is American and that's how most make a living. There's nothing in anything that I've posted here that says that I've accused any of you of being REAL pirates is there? No.I'm looking at the real pirate history to get an idea of who "THEY" really were. That's just how I am as a person.Isn't it wise to look into things before one jumps in with both feet first? To me it is wise.I never get into anything that I haven't looked into completely.I appreciate the comments and point of view though. And by the way I am and have been taking in everything that's been posted here.I also look at it from a historical angle to.
  5. In my research of pirates this is what I have come to as an explanation to my questions on the meaning of what a pirate is. A pirate is someone who robs at sea or plunders the land from the sea without commission from a sovereign nation. One who preys on others; a plunderer. One who makes use of or reproduces the work of another without authorization. He or she uses a ship for this purpose. Favored ship for most pirates was a sloop for it's speed and easy mobility. Am I right in my conclusion and understanding of pirates?
  6. Is there anything else I should know about pirates?
  7. Not a bad explanation Blackfoot and Cap'n Bob.That almost scrapes some of the bad treatment that the Lakota and the rest of the Native Americans had to endure when the European nations first landed on this continent. The name "Sioux" is a French rendering of the Ojibwa word nadewisou, meaning "treacherous snakes." The name was never meant to be a compliment since the French were at war with us at the time. Before we had always referred to ourselves as "An Alliance of Friends." In the Santee dialect, “alliance of friends” is spelled and pronounced, "Dakhota," in the Yankton dialect it is "Nakhota," and in the Teton dialect, it is "Lakhota." Today, we the Lakhota live primarily on the Rosebud, Pine Ridge, Lower Brule, Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Reservations. In addition, thousands of our people have moved off the reservation in search of better education and employment. Contrary to movies and popular belief, we the Lakhota are not history. We are very much here, struggling to keep abreast of an ever changing world. And, although we willingly take steps forward, we will never forget who we are and where we come from. Quite a different story from the pirates life and the reasons for becoming a pirate but,I'm begining to understand the concept here and can in a way relate to the reasoning behind taking up a carreer as a pirate.
  8. I went to the page you sent me to oderlesseye and it was very informative.I'll note that title and see what I can dig up from it. I would like to also thank those who've made an attempt to help me better understand.I am learning slowly but, with some hard effort on my part I will prevail and come to understand more.
  9. Pilamaya orderlesseye,I will go there next. Your dead wrong about that.We do NOT recreate the dances and customes of the people. We perform and live them as we do in private away from the publics eye.Though I understand what your saying and how your comparing the two. We have our pow wows even if no one outside of our people attended. In fact we've always practice them in our personal lives and among the people first and foremost. I am learning from this topic and will continue to research on my own as well as with your help. Name a few so I can look into it personally then.
  10. Intertainment is the main focus so far here. That much I've understood clearly.I tried the first link but,it is a broken link that does not work.I also tried the second link and it seemed to go along the lines with what goes on here. How to act like a pirate seemed to be the theme. With a gathered collection of places to go to learn how to act like a pirate. I can see why someone would want to be interested in piracy but,I'm not able to gather any facts on actual pirates in history. So far all I've heard is that pirates were just common thieves bent on robbing and stealing.Either at sea or land.So the romance in my eyes here is though there are no stated facts about pirates,it's just fun to act like one right?
  11. I can by imagining along the lines of your point Patrick however,I was born a Lakota Sioux. So my knowledge of my people is very accurate because our history is handed down from generation to generation. So when I speak of something from the historical view it is all factual. I think you've explained this community very well for me.As far as how everyone interacts with each other in postings jokes and sharing views on piracy. What I'm gathering from most of the answers to my questions here is that. You really do not know because the facts you have about piracy is someone elses version of pirates be it,reading a book, watching a movie ect.. I have many questions about pirates and that is why I started this thread. To read first hand from you who have a love of pirates. So far it seems most of what goes on here is just based on the love of piracy and your all trying to share what you learned from each others point of view on piracy as well as interacting with each other.
  12. When did pirates first come to be?I've viewed some of the photographs of your members. From the looks of the clothing it has to be the colonial era is that not so?
  13. This is a whole new world to me my friends. It's like learning something while reading it in a native tongue. My questions may be very elementary to you who have been pirates for a long time.Just as if you were to try and learn my language by trying to read it and learn it through your native English vocabulary. It's not that I do not know how to read and understand English,it's that I've never heard or seen this kind of place before about pirates.
  14. I have tried to read some of the post but they do not make any sense to me.
  15. With your help I think I can become more of a pirate over here.Perhaps if some of you would brief me I can learn from you.I know zero about pirates but wish to learn.
