  1. My sister got it into her head a few years ago that she wanted a tricorn for her birthday. Me, like a complete moron, told her I'd get one for her.

Despite all my hopes of her forgetting this, she's still determined to get a tricorn for her birthday (which is four days away). However, not being much of a tricorn-savvy shopper, I'm a little clueless as to what I should be purchasing.

So, can anyone point me to someplace online where I can get my hands on a tricorn that's under thirty dollars, but is of a reasonable quality? It doesn't have to be replete with shiny dingly-bobs - even a plain one would be just fine, just so long as it's durable enough to stand up to a fair amount of hat-type abuse.

  2. The PTC Ensign at Palm Springs...and look...Rob Lowe.

And either I'm highly imaginative this evening, or the lady standing to Lowe's right (our left) looks remarkably like O-Lan Jones when she was in Edward Scissorhands.

I've designed myself a pirate flag - you can check 'er out in tiny, spritely pixilated art in my avatar. It all started out as a ball-point tattoo I put on my ankle one day.

  3. I love bacon! It's so deliciously salty and flavorful. I could eat it every day!

...Actually, I do eat it almost every day. I'm also hypoglycemic, so it makes quite a good breakfast food. Why, this morning I had a bacon salad for breakfast!

Ah, bacon! It makes my mouth water just thinking about it! Fatty parts! Meaty parts! It's all delicious!

  4. A bit white, ain't they? They'll show every stain they've picked up, and some they haven't!

Oh, undies, are they? H'm... I should seriously consider making a pair for my Sims. You wouldn't mind if I nipped that picture of yours for reference, would you?

  5. I have yet to find a Pirates Flag Regulation Manual, but the production designer is appalled that they don't all fit the 3x5 type of format.

It also seems irksome to him that some are 20 feet on the fly, and some are 10 feet, once again alluding to regulations. Of course, many flags of the period were almost square. I also took the liberty of painting a couple of the flags, rather than sewing on the design. It's my opinion that this is correct as well on some of the more intricate patterns. As far as materials, I've used linen, hemp, wool, and yes, due to budget, some cotton. Let's face it, the industry thinks that all pirate ships are the Queen Anne's Revenge, and that all pirate ensigns should be of the size for a flagship. No dugout canoes, pinnaces, sloops, etc.

Bah! Conventional, uncreative lugs, the lot of them! And don't they realize that small ships are faster and make for better getaways?

Sorry about your Month from Hell, too. 'Tis a pity that problems like to gang up on a fellow like that.

  6. Because...

    -I'm attracted to water.

    -I'm a dreamer and a nut.

    -I enjoy hoarding plunder.

-Antique everything (clothing and technology, especially) fascinates me.

    -I'm artistically inclined.

After watching Pirates of the Caribbean, I researched real pirates and such. It still held fascination for me.

My fascination with pirates had gone down recently, though whatwithall the trailer to POTC2 being released, I was infected anew. Actually, no, I don't blame it on that entirely. It was, in fact, the non-piratical movie The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. I think that done did it.

Yeah, that definitely done did it. All it took was a Whitecliff-by-the-Sea and a Gull Cottage.

  7. Some gift shops sell replica coins; however, I'm not entirely sure as to how realistic they are. They looked to me like they were made from molds possibly cast from the real thing, but I don't think they sound like Actual Pirate Pocket Change when you try to jingle them. Still, if you found them suitable, you could take a hammer and a nail (or a drill, if you have one) and put a hole in one of 'em.

  8. ... Generally a reasonable price for solid gold or sterling silver is 6-12$ per hoop depending on size and embellishments. ...

Oy, that much? My card of three pair (various sizes) was about $6. 'Course, the price may depend on how much metal is used - gold vs. filler, overall volume of metal - though heavier earrings can be a pain in my opinion, as they can drag down on your ear uncomfortably.

I'd also like to mention that you can sometimes come across some awesomeosities at dollar stores. Not always, but sometimes. Or second-hand stores, although some of those lately (where I live, anyway) seem to want to charge an arm and a leg for their merchandice.

  9. Whatever the historical value, I would recommend making some of the flags a color other than black, if only to add some variation and - dare I say it - eye candy. Red would be my first choice.

Another thing I'd like to see worked into a pirate flag - an octopus or squid. Not only are they cool on their own, but people were right frightened of those, being as how they thought giant ones were lurking in wait to drag down their ships. In that regard, I think they'd make excellent pirate-flag material.

By the way, my sister wants to see a dragon and an angel on a pirate flag. (Vietnamese mythology; she's been watching a bit much 21 Jump Street, methinks. )

  10. That's an interesting method. When it comes to making ficticious maps, I just kinda start by making a bunch of jagged lines that become landmasses.

One thing about tracing over a map is that you're bound to get it looking realistic - EG, your islands're all facing the same way as far as length and width go.

  11. I about flolloped out of my seat when I realized Davy Jones has tentacles all over his face. I mean, not enough movie characters have tentacles these days! TRES WICKED! XD

Now, I'm sure some of you will think I'm right odd, but if Jack doesn't... erm, mutate into some kind of hybrid at some point, I'll be sorely disappointed. I'm hoping for some kind of angler fish myself. With little lights at the end of his beard-braids.
