Forming Re-Enactor Umbrella Organizations
Capt. Sterling replied to Dutchman's topic in Captain Twill
Yes the Fort at Pip chooses to do that and I believe, again correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that is what they were attempting do at Paynetown, and so far, pirate events do that, but it may not always be the case..and as Hugh stated, just because the event does chose to cover us, doesn't mean that the injured party won't go after us as individuals... -

That's bizarre. I notice awhile back you tried to quote me and you quoted yourself. Strange problem you have there. Yeah tis all Stynky's fault...him and his new toys....besides I just like to hear myself talk, no one else will listen to me any way...just ask Maddogge... -

Again Mission that is your choice, but for others and I haven't come across any pirate events YET that don't supply the insurance to cover those actively participating...it may be something in the future that we will all need. When I started AWI all the events we attended or even heard about required individual units to have their own insurance...with the horses, we had a very pricey insurance and with my younger brother taking the field as a trumpeteer, we had a special million dollar umbrella just to cover him... my dad could afford it, but there were other units as individuals that couldn't... I believe there was a blurb a bit back on the Pirate Brethren (and feel free to correct me if I am wrong) that dealt with the thought of being prepared for if events no longer feel they can afford to cover everyone and didn't Nate have problems funding the insurance needed for Paynestown this year? If the crews were insured by a umbrella group, each individual's costs should be less than if a crew were doing their own insurance... if we all had insurance then folks like Historyfanatic may not have had an issue having to come up with insurance himself... sure it would be nice for events to continue to cover us, but what if they feasible can't? -

and Hugh, we can always pick the weapons up after hours... and yes, for what its worth, again, just for an example, the first BB meeting was in mundanes or for the regiments that had them modern blazers with regimental crests and ties, along with gray flannel trousers... -

sniggering...honestly Hugh? the gent attempting the organization might only want to cover the east coast, because what are the odds of east coasters regularly going to the west coast? now that is not to say that for insurance purposes he might not be wanting to grow that large and he might even want to start out including the entire country... but first he needs to hear what folks want and he's open to suggestions... -

Well it just happens that a person on the east coast is attempting to try such an organizing...why not open up such a suggestion on the west coast...? no one is stopping you... -

Here! Here! agreed, along with large quantities of rum and absinth (sp) but after hours... we all have enough baggage to bring to the table without being intoxicated to start... and then again... we might make better sense three sheets to the wind... -

Good point Ransom... perhaps this should be whittled down to an East coast item only? Perhaps a west coast foundation could follow suit IF the east coast foundation actually works? -

My reply to Callenish... I agree Hugh...but what makes it work is being able to shift through the baggage with folks that are willing to communicate...it is wonderful to be able to ask, "what do you mean by that?" with the hopes that everyone will eventually be heard and understood. Baggage or not, everyone should be able to contribute and sit down together to try and make something work...will we make something perfect? fat chance... but we can always try and I am sure there will be disagreements but certainly there will be things that we can all come to agreement on, so we implement those items? For anything negative person A might come up with, person b might actually have a positive solution that person A never saw...and vice versa, person B comes up with something so bloody sunny it make you puke, and person A's negativity can point out that certain aspects won't work...so you find the middle ground and implement something that might not be pefect but actually will provide something positive in the long run... there are always bugs to work out... -

My reply to Mickey... Understood... why not find a place that is sort of a middle ground that would make traveling somewhat more equal to those that want to get involved in the meeting? I personally would suggest making it, its own "event" so that there is no other distractions going on at the time... for example, the group is making head way and then all of a sudden has to stop the meeting to go out and fight a battle...snigger...we would be getting no where probably very quickly... Just for an example, the first British Brigade meeting was a weekend meeting which concentrated only on that... -

Hmmm and then again, when the British Brigade had its very first meeting, reps were sent to that meeting from every active British unit at the time...we all sat down and discussed what we wanted and how it could be worked out... maybe that is what Dutch needs to do... a mini continental congress.. -

And I guess with the insurance, it become an issue when there are enough of us without it and all of sudden we need it... -

Mickey, again good questions... all I can say is ask Dutch, he wants to sit down with folks and get their input... And aye, we can understand some folks have had bad past experiences and that can cloud our judgment on future things,,, the same way those of us who have had good experiences can cloud our judgment thinking everything will be all right and we can miss the possible problems that might arise in the future as well... so the only thing I can suggest is make a phone call and talk about it...or better yet, sit down with Dutch at the next event you are at together and talk to him...he is willing to listen. A lot of us are willing to listen... the thing is without the talking we will never be able to weed out the problems or come up with viable solutions (which in the long run may or may not work, but again, can't fix it unless we all know there is a problem in the first place.) -

not individualism ... I was referring to Colonel's disease...a disease where one person thinks they know it all and dictates to everyone else how it should be.. Individualism should never been nipped in the bud... and sorry to hear of your bad experiences with other groups...unfortunately human nature being what it is, some people just don't play nice... -

Ah see now there lies the rub... Dutch is trying to organize a foundation that would open up and include even more groups that are currently getting shut out, offer them the help they might need to get up to speed with other groups, provide access to research that we might not be able to find on our own, along with possible insurance that might not always be provided by events to cover all our backsides...etc...etc...along with big toys that no one group might be able to ever purchase on their own... granted you get someone in the mix with Colonel's disease and there will be issues, but what's to say we can't nip something in the bud when it starts to rear its ugly head? -

Good question... the British Brigade worked great for us when we chose to do the AWI.. why are we still not there? Got tired of doing AWI..just got bored, as well as got married and supporting 4 horses is no longer feasible with two kids... so went and did numerous other time lines, all worked fine just have more fun with the GAoP time period strictly because the time frame is more interesting to me and always has been... now that there is an option to play in this time frame, I switched... I still have friends that do AWI and they are still very active with the British Brigade and still very happy with it..for insurance and networking it always used to be a great tool... -

I don't think anyone said any events had to change. And people have said they would opt out of events that they felt they would be ill suited for. And others still questioned those decisions. Which I think brings us right back around to the idea that each individual's involvement and degree thereof is a personal choice. Assuming why that choice was made, or assuming that there was no choice, just ignorance, is what I think many are trying say is damaging aspect. assuming anything is usually just leading to trouble, unless someone happens to guess correctly when they assume... boils down to what you are saying though... people read into things, form their own opinions and sometimes make the choice to attempt to judge correctly what the other person is trying to say or attempt to do without going to the other person and just plainly asking... "I don't think I understand where you are coming from, mind discussing it further?"
