Fort Zachary Taylor update for PIP 2007
Capt. Sterling replied to William Brand's topic in Fort Taylor
Thank you, most grateful -
Any chance I can get a current map "marked up" with general camp locations, fort, and seafront battle locations asap?? I don't want to rush ye William with the wonderful rendition I am sure ye will produce, but in regard to earlier pms it would be most helpful... We've already got something in the works but would really like to see it mapped out first before I pass it along...

Fort Zachary Taylor update for PIP 2007
Capt. Sterling replied to William Brand's topic in Fort Taylor
Not having seen the Fort, would this wall be facing the water to possibly include The Wolf in a gun battle with the Redcoats in the Fort?? -
Sounds like a cunning plan....

Damnation Rats, getting paid by the crown we may be, but we be out fer ourselves! after all need to raise a quid or two the wif be preggers over in Port Royal...
-
Oi Mistress Diamond, any chance of a period correct bug spray from our darling herbalist?
-
William, Sir, our crew is agreed, please put us in the Redcoat camp as pirate hunters, we shall fall out under Harry's command and keep you boys hopping...
-
No slight taken, especially since even simple fixes couldn't have been seen to since many of us were not "at home" to do so, but miles from where we actually reside for RF2. As to the bell and glass, it can easily be left at home for PiP if folks don't want it, it was just an offering as even Foxe said he could possibly see it being proper for such a camp... two less things to pack. And again, that is what the middies are for, they don't require watches but tend to their duties of keeping eye on the glass and sounding the proper watch. As to lack of discipline in pirate crews... I would find it hard to swallow that all crews ran amok at all times and yet folks like Bart Roberts were as successful as they were. Tis almost like saying all pirate captains were elected... Any way, this perhaps would be better suited for Twill not here...

^ one actually, daughter's bedroom... FBH likes Victorian, the office is just too chaotic to have a theme...and I am forbidden in the rest of the house.. < just started raining, so much for the garden, but now off to dinner or would that be out to dinner? V bore easily?

Will pm you William so as not to tie up this thread any further...

This is so perfectly put! I could not agree more... Well said Captain Jim!

^ Jumped aye, fallen no but would if a skit required it...nothing seems funnier to me than when folks in a hurry to leave the long boat, jump out into the water and a wave catches them off guard and fall flat on their face... Happened to one of the Lt Infantry once... still makes me chuckle... < mulching the garden,,, oh what joy... V house task you like least?

What is your scenario William for the weekend? Or would you like to start a new thread for this so people can share ideas?
-
No, I'm serious Pat, do you or any in the camp know proper hand to hand, sword, oar, what ever you can get your hands on to fight with? OF COURSE as long as the event coordinators are okay with this?? Other than the look of your camp, has anyone come up with a scenario for the camp? I.e, will you all just be careening, getting drunk, or would you like to post guards because you've been forced to put in for a cleaning in a not so friendly area? Would you have been on the alert for redcoats and pirate hunters, or does the camp feel that they are far enough away from the rest of the world that we don't have to worry about such things? Are you planning on doing strictly demos, for example talking one to one with spectators about the camp and why it is as it is...history lesson? Or are folks planning on Living History, where spectators that come through feel like they've been thrust back into the time frame and pirates aren't breaking out of character to give lectures... Just wondering where things are headed as well as how things will look...

Actually we were only confounded as to the actual way of striking the bell as we had come across several ways to do so, we even put it to Foxe, who did give us his input but actually said it was a bloody good question. The fun part was, none of us had watches, except the First Lieutenant, but then he had to be dressed in ACW gear... Poor Pete would go nuts if, when done speaking with someone, he noticed the glass had already run out!! In our crew the glass and bell is our middies responsibility... they did not come with us that weekend, neither did the travers board nor log book to keep track of things... which would have all been part and parcel with keeping the time. Remember, we're talking pendulum clocks, don't work well on a rocking ship... Marine Chronometers don't come around until what 1735 and not perfected until something like 1759... and as Mistress Diamond pointed out about getting a lot done in a very small space of time, after that weekend, we've come to the conclusion that the bell needs to be more stationary in the bell tower, because once struck it swings back on itself, striking itself out of time. As for the glass it works perfectly...the bell needs a tad more work, which actually may only take a pinch of the pliers.. and note I did say MAY have been included in a careening camp... and as for Pat and his blunderbuss, hmmm gives me a great idea for a scenario, if he's up to some hand to hand...

I had hoped as much, but I cannot tell you how many times I've seen them just propped up at events...

Night slipped by slowly remaining deathly quiet save for movements of troops and calling of the watch. Occasional howl of dog cast out for the evening disturbed the silence but the common sounds of late night wanderers and whores could not be heard. Most of the port had settled in for the night. Taverns would do poorly as only the faithful would bother the harassment of troops determined to find someone who did not belong, in order to put away a few pints. On board the Archangel, hidden beyond locked cabin door, Sterling could not stomach further meal. Port only was requested and look given, to emphasize want, forced Symms not to question captain’s choice. Much relieved was the old steward when only after two glasses, Sterling sent him away with demand that he extinguish candles prior to departing. Sterling lay still, the last of candle glow disappearing as Symms closed and relocked the door behind him. He did not know how long he stared out stern windows at star filled skies but soon rolled himself onto side. Once again facing hull of ship, he listened to steady tread of heeled shoes on decking above and simple sounding of six bells of the first watch. Fingertips inched forward to come in contact with smooth wood. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep.
-
And why on earth would they remove the wheel from the ship?? If you would really like to stretch it the bell MAY have been removed with the glass to keep the watchs going, as a careening camp would be more work related and guard duty may have even been posted if they felt the possible threat of being discovered and overtaken... but the wheel?

"There, there Mistress McKinney," Reiley soothed. "Let us concentrate on yourself and when you are feeling better we can have all the conversation you would like."

Straw hurried back the way he had come, stopping only once as red coated troop turned corner in opposite direction simultaneously with Straw. Soldiers came to the ready, halting in their tracks, avoiding head on collision. "Well if it isn't my mates!" Straw bellowed, a large grin spreading quickly. "Sorry I am to see you on duty this here night. I will have to be drinking alone then is it?" "Oi Peter," Sgt. nearly hollered in greeting. "Aye we be a sorry lot this evening for certain. Not a drop shall pass our lips for yet another hour." "Such a shame! Such a shame! I were wanting to treat each and everyone of you to a drink to me dear, departed Captain. God rest his soul!" "Tomorrow then," the sgt. declared. "And we shall buy the first glass in honour of your captain!" "Fair enough lads," Straw said. With a nod of his head, he was off again until safely aboard the Archangel once more. As gangplank was removed yet again, March cast controlled glance toward the ship’s Master. “Ye done it then?” March asked as he walked over to hear Straw’s report. Gone was happy-go-lucky nature as Straw bent closer to March and lowered voice. “Tis done. She be free of him now, the marriage is dissolved and the papers are in safe keeping with her own. Devareaux himself arrived just after I handed all over to the one they call Stockton.” March closed eyes a moment, subtle shake of head barely noticeable. “He would not listen to reason?” “No,” Straw replied. “He could not bare that she could not manage such a simple task for the sake of his daughter. He is certain that she does not love him and yet, he wishes her no ill will. This way she can honestly remarry when she chooses to. He believes he is doing what is best for her. I could not convince him to see otherwise. He‘s not well, Andrew, and after what Reiley just put him through, tis no surprise that he is not thinking clearly.” “He shall hate himself for it in a few days time,” March said with long sigh. “He already does.”
