  1. Just watched Black Sails season 1 on DVD

  2. I picked up Black Sails, season 1 on DVD. I was able to watch the first episode early but other than trailers had not watched any of the show. Despite many historical, equipment, and costume concerns expressed by the community I found the show very captivating! Very exciting, well, acted and very, very well written. Many episodes depicted a tension you could feel as you watched the show. Deep plots and with lots of exciting characters. The battles at sea were intense! If you have a passing fancy for action and adventure with a piratical theme give the show a try! I have been told that we will be able to enjoy at least 3 seasons of Black Sails. Anyone else watch the series have a few comments? We could mark some as having spoilers if you'd like to discuss individual episodes.
  3. Loved your topics shipmate! Nice you see you return!

  5. Figured all those ladies at JoAnn's would want a big dude to do all the heavy lifting...
  6. You are invited to a Halloween costume party and dress in your pirate kit. Is that "cheating"? I know another pirate, who puts on his kit and goes out to win multiple Halloween costume contests. His kit is about 80% hand made so he really does deserve some accolades. I have heard some call this cheating however and I'm interested in your opinion.
  7. Black Sails was renewed for a third season. Like it or hate it you get a pirate TV series for 3 years!
  8. and Johnathan let us know if you need crew to go on the account... A few here might be interesting in signing articles and embarking in the sweet trade!
  9. Time to pack up the cutlass and wait for spring.

  10. Time to put away the cutlass unitl next spring

  11. No I haven't had an exchange with Kass in years. I don't see her on these forums much anymore. I imagine she must be busy or involved in other things not related to pirates. I bet she does have a wonderful library of images!
  12. I've seen the Dover books online. Problem is that some of the images are of a more Victorian romantic bend.
  13. Time for autumn fun!

  14. Question for all: I’m looking for a few good books that show the fashion of the GAOP preferably with illustrations. Ultimately I would like examples of clothing worn not only in England and on the continent but also in the colonies, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. I know it’s a tall order… Suggestions?
  15. Brown County Renaissance Faire this weekend!

  16. May you enjoy onion rings and fried clam strips!
  17. Do we ever hear of Chaplains engaging in combat or were they exempt from any action even in emergencies?
  18. While I imagine that the clergy frequently followed the army to provide spiritual assistance since the middle ages when do we see naval chaplain appear in history? Was the position of chaplain around during the GAOP?
  19. If we did have the conversation I was drunk! Thanks Mission! It makes more sense to me now!
  20. Who really is "Captain Twill"?
  21. Just watched a little gem on Netflix. Not pirate themed but set in the same time line. Check out "The Day of the Siege". The invasion of eastern Europe by the Ottoman Empire! Very exciting!
  22. I was curious because I'm reading a novel (fiction of course) and its set during Queen Annes War. Mentions several men carrying rapiers. I believe I read someplace that early small swords did have a slight edge on the tip but as Daniel mentioned evolved into a triangular shape which prevented a cutting edge making the weapon only useful for piercing attacks (very fatal).
  23. At some point in the history of the sword the rapier was replaced by the small sword. Curious to know why this occurred. Was the rapier still in use by the GAOP or had it already been replaced?
