I attended a lecture last night at the Minnesota Science Museum (currently hosting the Wydah exhibit) presented by Barry Clifford. Simply amazing to hear him spin his tales! Also incredible to think that he still has huge blocks of concretions that still have artifacts yet to be uncovered!! Who knows what secrets will be revealed in the future (Barry mentioned that his goal is to open some of these concretions before an audience)? Barry also brought the Teja Ba ring to join the collection on display! What I found most intriguing about the lecture was the work that Barry Clifford and his team are doing in Madagascar. They have discovered 3 shipwrecks near twin islands known as the Isle of women and the Isle of pirates along with a series of tunnels. One of the shipwrecks is believed to be Captain Kidd’s Adventure Galley. I imagine we will see some amazing artifacts brought into the light of day from that location! The Madagascar site was also the location for a recent TV special (I have no idea what channel). Me mentioned something about a 13th century crucifix from Paris as one of the items discovered! If you ever get the chance to hear Barry Clifford speak I highly recommend you do so. You will be both educated and entertained!

Of the current tall ships that are in operation on the rivers, lakes and seas, which ones would/ could have been seen during the Golden Age of Piracy? I thinking along the lines of the Lady Washington (although I'm not certain she is designed to exhibit the GOAP time frame). Most of the tall ships I have encountered tend to be designed to appear closer the the Napoleonic times.

I always hear rumors about the supposed "Anne Bonny and Mary Read" movie that is supposed to be made. If only that would happen.

I remember them pressing the tubers and making a flour which was said to have very little protein (compared to say wheat). It also appears in the series "Guns, Germs, and Steel" (now available on Netflix).

I have also heard of a series on Stars network by Michael Bay entitled "Black Sails". Finally something I might want to watch on the small screen!

If my knowledge is correct cassava can be toxic if processed incorrectly. The process of squeezing out the starchy material is also very labor intensive (but cassava is still a food staple in many parts of the world). I seem to recall an issue of National Geographic mentioning this.

Anyone heard about this TV Series called Crossbones? Supposed to be a pirate themed series with Blackbeard as a major character?

Is cavasa root the same as manioc?

When I was a child my mother used to make a paste for crafts out of flour and water. We used it for everything including paper mache. I just can't image adding salt a baking that paste would make it tasty.

Last night I watched an episode of HBO's Game of Thrones season 2. They had a scene with a lad having his foot sawed off. Now I know it's a fantasy but the sound alone was horrible (also the way the woman 'rocked' the saw to have it bite into the limb).

Come on Mission! Get a sword! You'd totally badass with small sword hanging from your waist! You could proudly state that it is your "lance" for bursting boils.

Does this mean you plan to take up the sword Mission?

Interesting that so many people like Captain Morgan. I rather dismissed it as being too large a distiller to create a rum that can be enjoyed without a mix.

Lots of small run rum makers are now selling product on a local level. Just curious what your favorite rum is to drink straight without ice or a mix? Mine? Goslings Black Seal.

I guess the concept is that it would start a fire and be very difficult to pick up and toss overboard. Anyone?

Currently reading Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson. It has a few chapters with pirates!

I seem to remember reading that Guy Fawkes was sentenced to be drawn and quartered after being hung (but not until dead). While he was being turned off the ladder he leapt and broke his neck in the noose, thus denying the public the show they had hoped for.

I've got to go with Rob Roy. You see some interesting elements in the last fight seen with Rob and Archie. Archie does a lot of hanging parries which are rather like saying "You are so out of your league! I can kill you anytime!" Rob holding the broadsword above his head and bracing with the second hand showing signs of fatigue. Brilliant!

So what is the difference between what is called a jelly, jam, preserves, or something like apple butter? Is it a difference in name, manufacture, or content?

Wasn't cavalry still using armor at the time of Napoleon?
