  1. I used to wear a pretty long goatee. It hung down to roughly mid chest and i wore it in two braids. I used to love it, and so did my wife. but alas my new role in the Navy prohibits facial hair other than a mustache, and since i cannot grow one very well, i go without :D

  2. I mean it's almost like when a person loses an arm and they still feel it..."ghost limb".

Well, I may not be infantry, and really the only time i ever Hold/fire a weapon is during qualifications, but i know one thing i certainly will NOT miss....

13 (count 'em 13) Bloody buttons on the front of my Dress Blues! Makes it difficult to use the head, be sure! not to mention other things!

  3. Shake that Man's hand for me, MrPirate!

As for me, I joined to serve my country, and the way I see it is such:

I dont like war in the least, but i see it as a nessicary(sp?) evil sometimes (hell without it, we would still be playing "God Save the Queen" at the Cricket World Series!).

As far as Iraq goes though, i think we have just been there way too long. What happened to the days when we told people "Ok, we have kicked the snot out of your army and your country, if you dont want it to happen again, you better straighten the hell up!" and left?

  4. Thank you all. I really needed this reminder as to why I put on the uniform everyday, as lately my faith in the people i serve has waned a bit after seeing the anti-war protest here a few weeks ago and how they treated the sailors and soldiers just tryin to get to work....

Salute to all of you as well!

  5. Well i know this much, as we have learned in our Naval History Classes in Bootcamp...

The Continental Navy was founded on October 13, 1775, before the official onset of the war. But from what I remember, the Continentals did not have any large men-o-war, and mostly had sloops and some brigs, so privateering would have most likely been lucrative buisness.

If my memory serves me, John Paul Jones was a privateer himself when he took the Bonhomme Richard to Brittan. If I am mistaken, please make it known to me....

  6. Both of these hats look very fyne, gen'lemen!

I will probably get mine from Cap'n Jack (already have too many projects to tackle). But if i decide otherwise, i know where to be turnin fer help!

a drink to both of ye! :(

  7. Have you ever read the one about the SeaBee in the Korean War who used his cutlass against some North Koreans? It's in Boarders Away, I believe

That really sounds like somthing a SeeBee would do. :(

I roomed with one when I lived in the Barracks here on base, and MAN those guys are more nuts than SEALS!

  8. Forgive me for comin in late, and a little confused, i have been on Vacation...

did you want this sword for Halloween? if so, sorry I'm too late.

If not, Hanwei by Paul Chen has a whole collection of Practical swords with blunt edges that are historically accurate for around $250 at the CAS Iberia website, but I have found them much cheaper from other sites. They do not have a cutlass, but they do have 2 Bascket Hilts (Broadsword and Backsword, and the baskethilted broadsword WAS the sword that ended blackbeard!), a Mortuary hilt, and others..

  9. Being an avid Cetacean enthusiast, I can offer this, the most commonly hunted Whales of the day were sperm whales and larger baleen whales like humpbacks and Blues.

Sperm whales tend to spend most of their lives in Very deep water where they can dive for giant squid, their favorite meal, not the coastal inlets and warmer caribbean waters that the most famous pirates frequented.

Humpbacks and blues also tend to stay in colder, deeper water, except when it is time to Calf, when humpbacks will seek warmer climates.

just an amatuer's research, if anyone finds anything different, let me know

  10. one of my favorites is The History of Pirates by Angus Konstam, it has great info, a forward by David Cordingly, and hundreds of color illustration. Makes a great coffee table book as well.

Not to Step on GoF's toes or anything, but you could always looks here, on his web site.

  11. I know about how the sight of the flag of the hourglass or red flag, etc., sent chills from sailors's toes to the uppermost hair on their cowlick, but if my intent were criminal and the target possibly armed, I'd fly a false flag.

It is my understanding that the use of the Pirate flag was to intimidate your opponent before you even met them. If you were sailing in a sloop or brig, and trying to take a heavily laiden merchantman, they have little or no chance of running from you, and most merchantmen were poorly armed (so is my understanding) so a fight might have been out of the question. Intimidation was your best weapon it seems. If they gave up, you could take your prize whole, rather than in splinters, possibly damaging the plunder and wasting your crew's lives.

  12. I am a Christian myself, but alas, it has never kept me from having to defend myself or somone I Love on more than one occation.

Grew up in a pretty rough neighborhood and I was always percieved to be a "tough-guy", even though I am really not at all. So people tried to make a name for themselves in school by picking on me, or picking a fight with me, and i may not be a tough guy, but I wont let people walk over me either.

And I suppose i might have a slight bit of a temper... B)

  13. I will say that the first thing I notice is whether or not her figure is Womanly. the number one thing i do not like, as pertaining to physical appearance, is a woman who looks like a 12 yr old boy.

Curves are of the utmost importance, I actually prefer a woman with cushion to a hardbody. but it all has to be proportionate.

I am also a Lover of eyes and lips, full and seductive, if you please!
