  1. Just saw the "behind the scenes" preview on Starz...as the voice-over guy blathered on about "attention to accurate historical detail" the clip onscreen was a close shot of a drill driving a Phillips-head screw into some ship detailing...just about sums it up, I think.

  2. The Alafia River Rendezvous is getting some serious looks from Jon and I. We are tentatively planning a week-long careening camp for next year and will be meeting up as a day trip this year. Dates for this year are January 15-25 (yeah, ten whole days) with public days on Friday and Saturday 24-25. As of now the meet-up is Friday the 24th.

  3. I've seen enough previews and still shots and read enough reviews to conclude that Black Sails is Hollywood doing what Hollywood does. I think this is the Pyrate version of Once Upon a Time and Neverland, both of them fun little pass-time television series. If we want accurate portrayals of Pyrates we're going to have to wait for The History Chann...oh, nevermind.

On the other hand, it may lead to another bump in the general public's interest in Pyrates. We'll turn the most promising over to the dark side of reenacting and living history. *Insert evil laughter here* Eh, Starz is included in my television package, so I'll watch just to see. Perhaps the worst that can happen is we see more scantily-clad Pyrate girls in camp...

  4. I don't know if these exactly count as "overheard" as most everyone heard them but:

"The Mercury Crew is so cool they fart rainbows!" Zatara Delavega (I think) upon departing the Mercury camp.

"It's made of wood...Morning Wood!" Said by Cannibal Chrispy of a certain belaying pin (makes one redefine "belaying", dunnit?) during the auction.

    "$69 going once!....$69 going twice!....$69 going all... night...looong!....Sold! for $69!" Same auction.

"it doesn't use batteries...that's what makes it "period correct!" Yet again, same auction.

"Because sometimes you feel like a nut...sometimes you don't!" Yeah, that was some auction.

  5. Go here for all the information and contact information: http://www.floridafrontiersmen.org/alafia2014.html Iron Jon and I (and a few others) are considering a week-long camp next year.

I'll take lots of pictures. Most of the camp is Rev War/mountain man/some First Nations. Some are wary of us pyrates, having seen too many Hollywood/fantasy pirate and are worried about us ruining the authenticity of the event. That having been said, the organizers would love to have an accurate camp.
