Great Lake squalls can be really nasty.

Come up suddenly and disappear as quick.

Many a square-rigger has been caught too close to shore during such a storm.

Here in Kingston, at the mouth of the 1000 Islands we have many great scuba diving sites on wreaks caused by the sudden storms.

From the air, you can see the sites. Most are on tips of islands.

Thank the Zebra mussel for clearing up the lakes and giving great visibility.

I’ve been caught on the water when a water spout has appeared. That’s a tornado on the water. We were safety boats for the big sailing regatta they have here every year (biggest fresh water regatta in the world by hull numbers). I instructed all the sailors (Laser 1s) to turn turtle and hold on. Luckily, the waterspout didn’t come to close.

That is an excellent idea!

I'll check them out this weekend when I'm at Sterling for closing.

Night of Jolly Rogering

Daytime's for swinging from the rigging and games in the sun, but the night is when pirates really cut loose. Join us in The Thirsty Parrot Tavern for our Night of Jolly Rogering.

An evening of bawdy Pirate drinking songs, buxom wenches, dangerous stunts, and enough laughter to fill your poop deck.

Your host for the Night is Zoltan the Adequate Pirate, who will present Extreme Acts of Stupidity (and maybe end up with a hook hand or two). Joining him will be several special guests, surprises, beer, ale, wine, and our own band of scurvy dogs that put the 'Buck' in Buccaneer.

You must be 19 or older to attend this closed party event (ID will be checked at the door), and all for a paltry $10 (plus regular admission to The Pirate Festival). The night starts when the festival closes - don't miss out, 'cause who doesn't like a good Jolly Rogering...?

After looking at other games on this site with the chest of PoE, I see that the black box/chest may be the retail stand for smaller packages for the coins. Doesn't really look like it in the pic, but it could be.

Then the boat he was going to give her instead got blown up.

Whoa....

This is a must for any period games where coins are involved...

And a nice amount of them. Not just a couple of each like I've seen at other sources.

Our history group plays Glückhaus. Another good gambling game we discribe as 'the mass transfer of wealth'. Always good at the pub.

We ran a day at a camp ground the last couple of years where we had a couple of boards going. The kids were right into it.

One of the things I found really enjoyably funny about the Tortuga barfight was Jack roaming about the place looking for a replacement hat, all the while being narrowly missed by flung drinks, bodies, furniture, etc. Much like Cyrano Jones in "The Trouble With Tribbles".

I was talking to my friends in the front office for the St. Lawrence II. They have desided NOT to go to the Pirate Fest in A-Bay!!!

The ship got a contract for a cruise to SE Lake Ontario!!!

Saturday was a rain soaked day. Still there were lots of people there in the thin little plastic poncho's that the faire had. The Pyrates Royale were awesome. They did some of their old songs and sounded fantastic. The gang that I was with got mistaken a few times for the band. We had to quickly point out "no no... they sing better than us".

Some of my most enjoyable days at faire were in the rain. As long as it isn't too cold, and your garb can take it, it's kind of fun. Usually just the die hards out. It's not good for the faire itself though. Less patrons....

I really hope the Pyrates Royale come back next year if they do the weekend again.

It's always interesting to be mistaken for cast. The Canadian faires are all relatively new with few in garb. I was always been mistaken for cast there. One year there was a children's scavenger hunt. They had to find the 'Captain in Black" and introduce themselves with a song or a magic trick. Soon I figured this out and kept pointing them to the cast member who was the real target. The 'Captain' and I had a chat at one of the pubs, and he said I looked more the part than he did. He told me what the next direction what the kids were looking for and was welcome to supply it. The rest of the season when a child introduced himself as part of the hunt, I told them the next clue. It was fun.

I recommend seeing the young lasses that pour beer and cider at the "Black Horse Pub" ( I think that was the name of the beer stand), it's under the balcony where the court comes out and banters with the crowd. Anyways, these girls would fill you mug up to the brim and still only charge the cost of a drink... even when, like my mug, it would easily take two of the regular plastic cups.

Ah yes.... They are fine group of lasses as you've ever seen.

Order the mead... you'll get most of a mugs worth.

Just a smile and undying devotion is all it will cost you

I've been at the faire for Romance weekend. Never really noticed much difference

Now... beer weekend (Amber Bock) is a good one

Of course, it's closing weekend too. I'll be there sunday for sure.

I hope the front office desides to have a Pirate weekend again next year.

I keep lurking in and out of the Pyracy Pub, but I'm back for a short while! ^^;

I just thought that I'd be nice enough to post some pictures of my best friend and myself in our pirate garb before we went to the midnight showing of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (I'm the Capt'n Jack-ish looking one).

And here we are about 10 minutes before the movie, 11:50 p.m.! (I played with the picture a little, making it more antique looking.)

You must have had much attention from the other patrons of the movie, lass. You and your friend are rather stunning in your garb.

Too bad 'Jack' has a waterbottle in his mit.

It was Flynn's other Pirate movie "Sea Hawk" that had the dagger in the sail trick right?

I was aboard her back in the early 90's when she was in Halifax.

I know they dismantled the sets, but maybe one day they will do another Jack Aubry movie and she'll sail on the screen again.

Did the Engineering degree thing at school, then working in a cube farm for 5 years. I did get to say I built trains though. Spent about 3 of those years traveling to projects in Ankara, Turkey and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. So it wasn’t that bad.

Then the market dropped out and it was time for a change.

Now I’m full time Navy. On a long term contract through our Reserve force.

Maritime Surface (MARS) Lieutenant. I’ve done tours as Ship’s Navi-guesser and will be off in the new year to play Operations Officer (3rd Officer) till the summer. All on our fleets Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDV).

Currently I’m a Staff Officer at our Defence Academy. Sailing a desk. It’s been 3 years, so I’m going a wee bit cabin crazy.

But it does let me work at my dream job.

Being a Reservist, I get to have some control over my career. Where I go and when. I take my sea time over the winters so I can stay home in the summer.

This summer I was hired by Mercedes-Benz Canada to be a driving instructor at a performance driving school.

I get to teach people how to drive fast cars that are $70k to $140k.

Not only that, I get to drive LeMans prototype race cars. They are 2-seaters, so I take clients around for hot laps.

The school also does a Formula One experience program. For $13k you too can drive a F1 car. We have the Benettons from 98 and Arrows/Lolas from 97. Six cars in all.

I have to use all my military leave to do the instructing, but it’s more like a dream than a job. I get paid to drive someone else’s cars.

It's too bad you can't make it across the St. Lawrence and down to Sterling on pirates weekend...we will be missin' ye. That's a nice set up...were the movie goers interested and respond well to you?

It was interesting.

There are people in this world that a canon going off next to them wouldn't even get a look.

I'd say about 80% of people stopped and cheered or watched.

20% tried to be polite Canadians and just ignored us.

Inside the theater it was crazy. People were cheering during the fight. Unfortunately, the radio station gave away that we were doing something before each show. Many people brought camera.... flashes everywhere.

The little kids were the best. We gave little gold coins to 'prospective crew', only if we got a really good "Arrrrr!". The kids loved it

They won't soon forget their time with the Pirates!

Here are more pics in the thead "what are you doing for PotC2" including a full pic of our space. The sails and cordage we got from the local tall ship really helped the look. That's the Briginteen StLawrenceII that comes down for the Pirate fest in Alexandria Bay NY.

It is a shame I can't make the pirates weekend. I've got two other events happening the same time. I'm already ducking out of our fencing groups next demo that is that weekend.
