  1. I was also thinking of doing this. It's a shame I suck at sewing.......but.......it's fun to give it a shot!
  2. There's nothing worse than a bloody Spaniard soiling my seas with their snobbish filth! Bunch o' bilge rats, they are! This Irishman knows his way around a treasure galleon when he sees one.
  3. So check out what I've done with my blank! I went rummaging through a family member's jewelry stash (with permission) and found this rather fitting Incan/Aztec/Tribal pin that I decided to decorate my hat with! Thoughts? The pin itself is BARELY long enough to fit through both layers of felt, so i'm finding that the pin itself isn't very secure. Any advice on how to keep it secure 100%?
  4. Wow! Fantastic examples, that was exactly what I was thinking. Thanks for the pointers, Cap!
  5. GREAT cast is right mate. Did you watch via that link? Just trying to be a shipmate. I did, and currently am! They're just leavin port for the Caribbean. Makes me yearn for my garb for the upcoming fall Ren Faire. Still need a good vest, baldric, pistol and blade....and pants....oh dear. I have the fever as well lad, our next feat is May 18-20 Columbus, Ohio...so I won't be waitin' TOO long...anywhere near ya? (and that IS quite the list mate ) Hahaha not at all. I'm in Massachusetts. Got King Richard's Faire in September/October, though.
  6. So after some thinking, I've come to the conclusion that I'd prefer to wear it "Barbossa/Capt. Kidd style". AKA i'll form on side of the hat so that it's folding upwards and ....i'm putting way too much thought into this thing...
  7. Thanks for the advice, and yes I have seen that thread! Also, Pegleg, I do like it as is, but I'd really like to shape it into a cavalier style. I think it looks better on me head like that. Also a hat band is a great idea! I'll definitely be scoping out period paintings and photos of other's examples.
  8. and I'd like to give it a nice "cavalier flare". Any recommendations on how to make this look a little more authentic and piratey? Is there a way to make it seem a little more warn? Also, don't mind the tiki(s) in the photo...they're the only thing I could find to prop the hat...Oh yes and I got the blank for Townsend. Really stiff felt!

  10. So far, I'd say it's pretty awesome! Great cast, too!
  11. Boy PETA would have a field day with that thing...
  12. This thread has certainly turned into a plethora of knowledge. Fascinating! Loving all of this info!
  13. I'm no detective or professional historian, but I would assume both kinds would be used....however I don't think I've ever heard of a blunt-tipped utility knife....
  14. I have a tin whistle coming in the mail tomorrow, and I'm looking for classic GAoP tunes to play, along with some basic irish ones. Any good tunes that you all know of that I should learn?
  15. Bid it out?....are you saying there's some to be had on EvilBay?
  16. Totally jealous. Any recommendations of where I can pick up such a blade? I've checked out KultOfAthena, but that's about it.
  17. This thread is making me drool with envy. Please excuse me.
  18. mmmm...black powder flintlocks......Knife first, gun second.
  19. I honestly wish I had time for such ventures, but I'm either at work or i'm focusing on building up my own business.
  20. Did some sketches earlier this evening.
  21. Another Irishman! Right on! I used to be a part of a Civil War unit comprised (historically) of Irishmen!
  22. aye, a knife and a good pair o' pants was probably gonna be my next purchase. I already have a shirt and I ordered a blank felt hat today, along with a tin whistle!
  23. Thank you for the reply, William! Very informative! We are both on the same page then, regarding foreign weapons as trophies instead of battle-ready items. The reason I brought up this question was because, regarding my character, I was hoping to create a rather "salty figure". One who's been around the seven seas and has many a tale to tell. However, I'm still in the brainstorming section and am actually drawing what I want my character to look like (give or take a few items). I may be coming at this at a more "dungeons and dragons" type view, but it helps me get a sense of what I could add, or take away from my character. No rolling for hit points, I promise! Also the shillelagh is a good idea.
  24. This question came to my mind today as I am currently trying to create a character for myself. I don't mind straying from the "historical path" a little bit, but I'd like to keep it as realistic as possible. So with this in mind, do you suppose European pyrates might have come across and used middle eastern weapons such as the scimitar or some kind of short sword? I'm creating an Irish character, as I am decent at an Irish accent and find it to be very fun (the ladies love it, especially my own lady)...I also have a rather small budget right now and am trying to build up my kit slowly, piece by piece, for an October Ren-Faire.
