I think Hurricane has posted (or someone else) that a majority of the pipes found in Port Royal were red clay. As far as I know, there are no other red clay pipes for our period on the market. Opportunity? GoF

Here is a site that makes clay pipes for our period... or just about any other period as well. http://www.dawnmist.demon.co.uk/pot4.htm GoF

What do you think of "What do you think" posts?
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Beyond Pyracy
I guess that is my point with the "what do you think of" post in general. Its hard to tell whether someone really wants constructive criticism. And, even if that person (the one asking) genuinely wants constructive criticism, there are other post readers that may feel offended by the remarks made as too harsh or what not. And this post wasn't meant to ruffle feathers... but there are a vast array of ideas and interpretations of things in this forum. We have over 4300 registered users, and probably well over 100 active at any time so, while our common thread is interest in pirates, there are always many different angles and approaches being made. Lady Barbossa This post was not targeting you personally. The irony of the the two post topics aside, I rarely venture into Rabble Rousing, so, this post was not intended as a jab at you... ***** I just read your post and seen the pic. It obviously doesn't fall into the category that this post was addressing because you asked for opinions, got some constructive remarks and took them for face value, and responded to that criticism well. ***** GoF -
What do you think of "What do you think" posts?
Gentleman of Fortune posted a topic in Beyond Pyracy
Not stirring the pot or nothing... I always cringe at the "What do you think of my XYZ" posts (here and other places). Now really, if you cared what we thought, shouldn't you have asked before you made the purchase (or made the item or ???)? Its like the friend that, after dating someone for 6 months or more says to you... "Hey, what do you think of my boyfriend Mark?" when they are already head over heels with that person. The time to ask was 5 months and 3 weeks ago. Now, if I tell you the truth and say, "well, I can't get past the fact that he treats you like dirt and is a self centered sob", I only alienate me from my friend. So goes the, "Hey, what do you think of my new Pirate hat (for example)? and they post a picture of something like this.... It makes me really wonder if they want honest opinions about their hat. If they do, you gotta scroll past all the "Oh My God! That is the most wonderful hat I have ever seen" posts to put your two cents in that will turn you into the forums a-hole. Just sayin.... GoF -

Let me help... Interesting. Short jacket (is that a blue and white checked shirt underneath?) Slops (short style) or Petticoat Breeches with drawers or Breeches underneath. Definitely a scarf/handkerchief under his hat, and it looks to be a tricorn/cocked hat. Lots of goodies in the whole painting... Thanks! GoF

No, I don't have an update, but I was hoping somebody would. Since its no longer under water, and the post was getting lost, I thought I would start a new one (topic) and see if there was any new news. Anyone? GoF

Shoe Buckles and How to Fit GoF's buckles
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Thieves Market
Kevin Garlick made the ones in the picture. There should be a link to him on my site. They are made in the UK.... so the exchange rate and shipping to the US should kill you. There is more info at my webpage (you can follow the link in my sig) Best of luck Greg aka GoF -
I am getting some inquiries as to how these buckles go on the shoe. Here is the info/how to. http://www.gentlemenoffortune.com/buckle.htm If you still need buckles, check them out here http://www.gentlemenoffortune.com/footwear.htm Thanks GoF

Its good. This guy has nice stuff that comes up from time to time. I am guessing the reserve alone is going to be $1000 GoF

Correct shoe buckles... available soon
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Thieves Market
For the brass ones, if you put them in a plastic container, suspended above a bit of ammonia, the brass will react and really give them an "old" appearance. Don't put them in the liquid, just the fumes from the ammonia are enough, and it doesn't take too long. I'd start with about an hour... overnight and they will look about 200 years old! Greg aka GoF ps Thanks for the kind words... The crazy thing is, they really are hand made. -
hee hee... the hook is getting set! Out of Gas is my favorite episode... i think. I also like War Stories a lot too. Greg

You will have to excuse me, Mission, as i really have been out of the TV loop for about 9 years (see earlier post). But I can't help but wonder, what shows have been on TV since 2000 that you think are good? No really, this is not meant as a slam or nuthin', but I am curious what you like. Personally, Medical shows bore me, I never was (or will be) a Trekkie as i never really "got" star trek nor cared about any of its iterations. Cop shows are the same thing over and over (to me) and Reality TV is a show about people that I could care less about (so, I care less)..... 24 was interesting. It was a roller coaster ride, but season one was enough and I never looked back. What, in your opinion, have I been missing? no... really. Thanks in advance. Perceiver? Greg

Well it helps that Saffron is hot (or at least I think so... ) Anywhoo... Caraccioli, you better watch out, you are turning into a fan! I agree that Mal came off as kind of a prick for the first coupla episodes. But I chalk that up to taking a while before the characters fit the actors and vise versa. I am REALLY tired of River though. As far as the show goes, to me, she is the weak link. I haven't seen Serenity yet though... and I am debating watching it. I am sure its good, I am not sure I am ready to have all the loose ends tied up. Greg

Sorry if you have seen it before, but this is the kind of thing that shoots coffee out my nose. http://www.break.com/index/drunk_jed_trail...iler_trash.html Greg

Caraccioli I think that is why the series had some problems and was eventually canceled. I think its hard to build character identity in the first show, or even in the first 5 shows. But if Firefly doesn't do it for you, don't feel bad or disappointed. Also, you have to suspend some disbelief too for this to work for you. Its a low budget sci-fi tv series, so its not going to be polished and expensive like Star Trek, so if you get caught up in, "hey, why is that bum on another planet 500 years from now wearing Italian cammo coveralls?" you might end up missing what is good about the series. So force yourself to enjoy it for what it is, a western in space. You may see some stereotypes you have seen a million times before, but these might just be able to take you along for one hell of a ride. But if you don't like it, don't worry, they canceled it for you! Greg

FireFly: Inara or Kaylee
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Beyond Pyracy
My take on that scene was a little different, maybe I should view it again to make sure, but I don't think Kaylee was mocking him at all. She always has something nice to say, and is usually upbeat. I think she was trying to compliment Simon on his vast knowledge, but was left kind of speechless. The only thing she could come up to say (while dreamily looking at Simon) was "wow... thats so..... Historical". Silkie I myself am an unabashed Ginger fan and will admit it to just about anybody. But you are right here, I have not run into many, (maybe 1 in 100) that pick Ginger over Mary Ann... so you are right there (except for me). But good gravy I like tall women and lover redheads.... Which Ginger has PLENTY of.... mmmmmmmm Ginger...... Greg -
FireFly: Inara or Kaylee
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Beyond Pyracy
What a bummer to hear that about Kaylee... (Jewel). Which just goes to show that they are really nothing like their characters. I have only heard GREAT things about Adam Baldwin though. But back to Saffron She has the companion training AND she kicks butt! So what if she's a little psycho Greg -
FireFly: Inara or Kaylee
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Beyond Pyracy
Well, thats why there is Vanilla AND Chocolate (and Strawberry!). What is interesting though, is that on Mals "my space" he took one of those "which crew member are you" tests and it came out as Kaylee. Kaylee took the test, and her results were "Wash". Interesting, and while its no where near being a scientific test, it does go to show that the people who play the characters are probably nothing like the characters. Yes, but she said when she first came on board that she wouldn't sleep with You (Mal) nor would she sleep with anyone who worked for you (Mal). So.... Seems like you are gonna have to "pull" a Jayne and "If you want me, I'll be in my room".... Greg
