    Marion, Indiana

Mississinewa 1812 is the largest War of 1812 living history event in the United States. Sponsored by the Mississinewa Battlefield Society Inc, Marion, Indiana with the support of the Department of Natural Resources. It is a historical commemoration of the Battle of Mississinewa fought here on December 17-18, 1812. It's a step back in time to 1812.

[Great Lakes River Pirates will be in attendance.]

    About Mississinewa 1812 . . .

Military Encampments. Time travel through the days of the War of 1812 in the British and American military camp viewing the daily life of the War of 1812 soldier. Take a special tour of the British field camp. Ongoing demonstrations also include field drill, artillery firing, musket and rifle drill, battlefield medicine and surgery, and battle reenactments.

Indian Village. The culture of the woodland Indian dominates the largest reconstructed woodland Indian village in the United States. The picketed fort and the traditional long house are the center pieces for this glimpse of Indian life that has been on this site since 1752. Storytellers will captivate you with their Native American legends.

Rivertown. More than 140 merchants, artisans and food purveyors will delight you with their wares, demonstrations of 18th Century crafts, food and drink of 1812. Rivertown offers reproductions of many 1812 necessities including fine yard goods, silver and tinware, pottery, muskets and candles.

Wilderness Area. Life along the rivers and streams in 1812 is recreated in the longhunter, trapper, voyager, and wilderness camps along the river. Each camp features ongoing demonstrations of fire starting, open firing cooking and storytelling in this unique display of wilderness life. Don't be shy about inquiring into their lifestyle.

Food & Drink. More than 20 Rivertown food purveyors offer 1812 delicious foods ranging from English trap pies, barbecued chops, bratwurst, ribs and chicken, hearty stews, baked potatoes, and French pastries to fry bread and ice cream. The aroma will whet your appetite.

Traditional Crafts. Stop and visit with any of Rivertown's early 18th Century master printers, gunsmiths, tinsmiths, silversmiths, soapmakers, potters, blacksmiths, weavers, and other traditional craftsmen. All invite your questions.

Music, Song & Stories. Rivertown is filled with ongoing performances of music, songs, and stories throughout the weekend.

  12. isn't a minion a type of cannon?

Isn't it a small fish? Ya, know the name of the boat that the Skipper and Gilligan were on, the SS Minion. I guess that's why they had all those others on the island?

    Aye, I suppose you've got a point ...

    MINNOW + GRUNION = MINION

BTW - it's open fishing season on grunion on Cali beaches now, -- next time they should show up is June 22 - 25.

  13. I am sincerely sorry for my actions. No one should question that, however, was I REALLY the only one to have committed ANY kind of felony last weekend?

I’m sorry Thomas, but trying to lessen the impact of your actions by making unsubstantiated allegations against other people is a sign of how immature you are. Especially when by your own statements you have shown you are untrustworthy.

This is like the little kid claiming, “Well Billy stuck his head in the toilet too!” Whatever anyone else did doesn’t excuse your actions in anyway.

I don’t think we really need any further discussion on this point.

  14. Cap'n Michael and I made it up for Saturday only. A rare pirate event where one could wear their pirate coats and not swelter. In fact I was wearing my heavy wool cloak towards the end of the afternoon, and was quite happy for it.

We were warmly welcomed in the pirate camp with Black Hearted Pearl and Gary. Michael joined in the cannon show, while I manned my own little Canon and took many a shot. You can see them posted in the photo albums on the NQG MySpace (don't need to be a MySpace member to view them):

    http://www.myspace.com/no_quartergiven

(just click the word "pics" under the NQG cover image.)

We were invited for dinner with the gun crew. Boy ... what a dinner!!! Clams, shrimp, fried fish, and huge CRABs spread in a heap on spread out newspapers on the table. Also corn, biscuits, and Key lime pie for dessert. Richard is an AWESOME cook. We were so glad we came. And so glad Pearl and Gary invited us. Thank you.

  15. I didn't go this year owing to the end time of the event vis-a-vis where I live and work. Just can't get there until its basically over. The last two years I was taking time off from work to attend.

If there is a desire for more pirates to show up and drop some coin into the coffiers, I'd suggest this run 3 pm to Midnight, vs Noon to 9ish. I am not alone in this observation as I ran into more than one lad at Big Bear the next day that said the same.

Greydog, I know you are trying to make a helpful suggestion, and that is appreciated. However there are many restrictions that need to be dealt with.

The ending time for the block party portion of the event (9 pm) is due to the fact that the permits for blocking off the street expire at 10 pm. So the block party needs to wind up at 9 pm to give vendors the last hour to pack up and clear off the street before the blockades are removed. The party did not stop at this time though ... most of the party goers moved into Club 195, and some stayed much later in the evening, maybe until closing time.

I remember having this discussion with Evan last year, why the block party on the street couldn't last longer, and he was frustrated that the permits for barricading the street were only good until 10 pm, and we have to clear the street by that time. It's not like there is a huge lot of traffic on that street after 10 pm on a Friday night! It was city personnel that came and took the barricades away precisely at 10 pm, so it probably has to do with how late they are willing to stay to officially reopen the street.

True, having the event later in the day, or even on a weekend, would allow more people to come, and donate more money. However, the event organizers are working with what is available. The event needs to be on a Friday, because the hospital will not allow the actors to come visit the kids on the weekend. The owner of Club 195 (in Anaheim) donates the use of the facilities for free. The city of Anaheim gives street closure permits, but for only until 10 pm.

So pirates ... remember, IT'S A FREE PARTY, with FREE ENTERTAINMENT. Maybe one year wasn't as good as another year in some respects, but better in other respects. Still it was a fun time. I know it is hard for some people to make it, especially with traffic volumes on Friday evenings. Come if you can. Many did. If you couldn't come, maybe you can peruse the multitude of photos from it on MySpace and enjoy it vicariously. It's better to have the event with some people coming, than to have no event at all. Remember ... the main goal is to bring some cheer into the lives of DYING children, and to help raise funds for a worthy cause. And have fun doing it.

I for one would just like to say thanks to those who spent many selfless hours of their own time setting up the event (Evan, Viv, Matt, Sam, and probably several others I'm unaware of), and to the musicians who donated their talents for free (Pirates of the Black Swan, Doxie Chix, The Pirates Charles, Mommy's Little Monsters, ... did I forget anyone?), and to the actors and pirate characters who entertain the children and then came to entertain the pirates at the party though some had to leave early due to other commitments(Treva, Maxie, Vinnie, David, Marty, Scarlett, Talderoy, the Spanish Pirate, several Cap'n Jacks, and lots of others I'm sure I'm leaving out), and to the owner of Club 195 for the venue. Also thanks to all who donated items for the silent auction or just donated monetarily.

    --Jamaica Rose

  16. There were only 3 vendors and a band. Whilst the band was good enough fer modern pirates, I was a hopein' fer more piratey music.

You say you didn't arrive until 7 pm. The party started much earlier. The event started at NOON!!!!! There were piratey bands playing earlier in the afternoon, with lots of piratey music ... Pirates of the Black Swan, and Doxie Chix for example. The Pirates Charles played too (not sure if you consider them piratey or modern ... I figure they are both, sort of pirate Metallica. The band towards the end, Mommy's Little Monsters, was mostly modern cover tunes. So offering something for pirates and modern music lovers alike.

As for the lack of vendors, aye, we could have used more. I tried to help Evan by sending off messages to many of the vendors I know. But with the Big Bear Pirate Fair and Valhalla Renaissance Festival the same weekend, many of the other vendors I tried to recruit were off at those events. To get someone to come set up for a few hours of sales on a weekday afternoon is tricky.

The auction had been in the bar last year with quite a few items fer bid, me lady and I won a brunch at Marie Calanders, but this year twas outside. These were so well hidden [although in plain sight] that I ne'er even saw 'em till twas too late. Me purse was empty anyways.

Maybe you didn't notice the auction items at first. More announcements throughout the day might have helped. But as auction was drawing to a close, you couldn't help but notice them, for announcement after announcement was made, reminding people to get their bids in. True, maybe by that time it was hard to push through the crowds to see what was there.

Also the fact they couldn't take cash but only checks made out to CHOC (due to legal problems from some crazy lady the year before) made it harder. In this age of ATMs, people don't carry checkbooks around with them as much. I forgot to bring my own checkbook, and thus had to mail a check in on Monday.

True, last year's party had a few more vendors, but I think this year's party had much better offering of music. With the stage out on the street, but within easy view of the bar's patio, I think that really opened things up, rather than keeping the music inside the crowded bar.

Remember ... this was a FREE event (you didn't need to pay anything to attend), organized by an all volunteer crew.
