  1. Sorry ya let ye down Blackbeard. I don't know of any literary origins fer the sayin'--it was just a piece of advice from my Grandpa.

He never completed grade school--such was the case back before World War I--and I know he didn't read much outside newspapers. Maybe he picked it up from Grandma--she was a school teacher.

  2. As me uncle Geezer Addams usta say:

Makin' it with a skinny woman is like ridin' a ten speed across th railroad tracks. It can be done without killin yerself; its damned uncomfortable; and yer liable ta break sumpin' in the process!

Ta quote Nigel Tuffnel: "The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin'--"

  3. Emergency! Emergency ! Everybody to get from Street!

Walt Whittaker: I'm sorry, I-- I wasn't trying to-- Well, I-- I was trying to kill you, I'll admit that, but it wasn't-- I mean, it wasn't anything personal.

Lieutenant Rozanov: Hmm... don't do it no more.

    From:

The Russians are Coming! the Russians are coming! :)

    Oh, and: "Klaatu Barada Nikto."

  4. Skippy hit the airwaves in the States in 1966 or so.

Ding ding ding. We're not talking about the same show at all! That's what I get for being a younin'.

*This* is the Skippy that I've seen. Skippy The Bush Kangaroo from 1991

oh yes, Wild America. Gosh, I love Marty Stouffer! Can I blame watching that show as a little impressionable farm kid as the reason that I'm the huge tree hugging hippie today?

In a way we're talking 'bout the same show. The 1966 version had the same theme song lyrics--I know: they've been in me head since me last post! The 1991 DVD is obviously a remake. Ain't the entertainment industry original?

Speakin' of "true wildlife adventures:" I remember Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom we kids had to sit and watch it every week. My parents thought it was educational--we also had to sit and watch The Ed Sullivan Show. Looking back--the wierd acts on Sullivan were more influential on my warped brains. But I digress:

When I was a lot younger, my family, living in Utah, went to visit some distant kinfolk in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Right across the Missourri river from Council Bluffs was Omaha--and right in the middle of Omaha Was the Mutual Of Omaha Headquarters building. For about two weeks, I had my little brother convinced that was the studio where they made the TV series and Marlin Perkins never really left Nebraska--It was all a big fake. My brother started refusing to watch the show 'cause it was all made up. He had quite a row with my parents, in which, of course I became the culprit. Dad didn't know how to yell at me and keep from layghing at the same time>

  5. Yeah, except Skippy the Bush Kangaroo was shot in the 80's not the 60's  I've seen the entire series thanks to Netflix & the little swab. I think I even mentioned here when the theme song was running rampant through my head.

"Skippy, skippy, skippy the bush kangaroo. Skippy skippy skippy, the bush kangaroo"

Great! Now I'm never going to get that back out of my head!!

Skippy hit the airwaves in the States in 1966 or so. I remember it well--it was part of that dreadful plague of friendly critter TeeVee shows of the 60's. I was in my thirties and in gradual school in the 1980s, so I don't remember much from that decade.

Rember Flipper? (talk about an annoying ear-worm theme song!)

Then there was Lassie (i know--it predated the 60's but it ran forever)

Gentle Ben--co starring Clint Howard (Opie's brother) and a black bear in the Florida everglades.

And Doktari, the adventures of an animal doctor befriending all Africa's wildlife.

That was fun--almost as fun as the good ol MMPI

  7. Well, I'd say yer in darned good shape fer the shape yer in!

All that goin' on and the moderatin' and all the work ye do fer us pikers in th' Pub . . .talk about a full plate!

All I can say is Thank ye fer everything, and may the new year hold plenty of blessings on ye. Th' Pub wouldn't be the same without Rumba Rue!

Happy New Year and Gud blessi thig!

  8. One of the best has gotta be Bob Newhart.

    His standup stuff is priceless.

The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart are the stuff of legend.

He also needs to be seen in Hell is for Heroes (a WWII drama), Catch 22as Major Major Major, AND as the ninja fighting exMarine in The Librarian: Quest for the Spear. The movie was lame  --the best parts were whenever Newhart was on camera.

Sometimes it takes a team. Remember Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner and the 2000 Year Old Man? Great stuff.

And then there was Bob And Ray. . . .

And as for James Coburn: He was at his best in Our Man Flint and In Like Flint.

    Rum

For the longest time I didn't like Rum, because just about the only stuff I came across was (Cue scary music) Bacardi!!

Then I grew up and left the Utah State Liquor Stores behind --- and --Lo and Behold! There were more kinds of rum than you can shake a stick at (if thats your idea of having fun)

Bilgemunky has a great list, But I would also like ta add the following:

Lamb's Royal Navy Rum, Whalers Hawaiian (the dark stuff), And ifn ye have a friend in England, Get them ta score a bottle of Captain Morgan Jamaica Rum (no relation to the American marketed spiced stuff).

Last summer I got marooned in Omaha, and All I could find was: (cue scary music) Bacardi! It was like Utah but flat. Eventually I did find some Meyers Jamaica Rum. Its pretty good.

And ifn ye are lookin' fer cheap, Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville brand makes a pretty fair gold rum--Best fer mixin with Coke or World Market brand Mojito Mix. (Best when th in-laws come by: tastes good, is cheap and mixes well, and you're not wastin' the good stuff on yer wife's dorky brother.

Bo I don't like spiced rums--they're kind of like spiced vodka (covering the kerosene taste of bad distilling) But what you're describing sounds like one of the few I tasted and liked I think it was called Admiral Nelson Spiced Rum.

  9. Ahoy !

Now this pub looks familiar-- Ray issit you? And who is 'at passed out in the corner (looks around) Who aint passed out in some corner?

Its been a while since I been in here--too much time away--long story.

Anyways I have this keg o Rum what fell off the back of a cart--so to speak-- shore is heavy. Any volunteers willin' ta help me lighten the load?

    Thought so! :rolleyes:B)

  10. Given the fact that this topic is one of those that will cause a war--like religion and politics-- the discussion has been remarkably civil.

    And I salute you all.

We were not there when Maynard fought Teach. We were not there when Kidd did the hempen jig. We did not sail with Morgan or Drake. We didn't man the guns with Lefitte at New Orleans.

We didn't try to outsmart Jackie Cooper. We never slid down a mainsail hanging from a dagger with Doug Fairbanks. We weren't even extras standing behind Flynn.

We all hold the Idea of Piracy in our hearts. It is the attitude--Pyratitude (mind the pun!) that means something to us.

In the real world I'm not much. . .a 50ish, overweight, underpaid, working schmuck, not even putting all his education to good use. By the standards of many I'm pretty much a loser. I'm not even much of a Reenactor --not hardcore or farby. I don't dress up to perform at renfaires. I hardly have any stuff (kit or costume) worth mentioning.

What I do have is an admiration of things Pyratical. Despite the historical negatives--yes, they were murdering robbing thugs-- pirates were something else.

They formed some of the first democracies in the Western Hemisphere. Leaders ruled by consent of the crews, and through their abilities. The crews themselves were castoffs from a society that treated them like scum. Under the black flag lay opportunity to rise above your station in life--and failing that --a chance to live in your feet and not on your knees. A chance I like to think I would have taken back then.

These days when we dress up--we all know it is just pretend.

But ain't it nice to be someone we really aren't, even for a day.

    I, I will be king

And you, you will be queen

Though nothing will drive them away

We can beat them, just for one day

We can be Heroes, just for one day

And you, you can be mean

And I, I'll drink all the time

'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact

Yes we're lovers, and that is that

Though nothing, will keep us together

    We could steal time,

    just for one day

We can be Heroes, for ever and ever

    What d'you say?

I, I wish you could swim

Like the dolphins, like dolphins can swim

    Though nothing,

    nothing will keep us together

We can beat them, for ever and ever

    Oh we can be Heroes,

    just for one day

    I, I will be king

And you, you will be queen

Though nothing will drive them away

We can be Heroes, just for one day

We can be us, just for one day

    I, I can remember (I remember)

Standing, by the wall (by the wall)

And the guns shot above our heads

    (over our heads)

    And we kissed,

    as though nothing could fall

    (nothing could fall)

And the shame was on the other side

Oh we can beat them, for ever and ever

    Then we could be Heroes,

    just for one day

    We can be Heroes

    We can be Heroes

    We can be Heroes

    Just for one day

    We can be Heroes

We're nothing, and nothing will help us

    Maybe we're lying,

    then you better not stay

    But we could be safer,

    just for one day

  11. Me old Grandpa had a 10 Ga double gun he liked ta load with rock salt fer more-or-less non-lethal encounters.

Mom used ta tell me he used it ta scare off boys he didn't like.

Grandma said ye could also use dry rice. It stung like rock salt and had the added hint of wedding!

Sadly, he never left any information on shot patterns of rice vs salt. . . :P
