I pinned the front of the jacket together so we could see what it will kind of look like when it's done.

Close up of the front panel. The straight stitch leaves the extra fabric (I left it there on purpose) dangling and in the way. This is going to act as a reinforcement later on, but right now it's completely in the way.

The left side and back pleat reinforcements. You can barely see them.

After I put in the straight stitch down the front panels, I decided to finish up the pleats so they wouldn't tear or stretch out any while I worked on the rest of the coat. I measured out 2-1/2" strips of just the cotton shell fabric and made fabric tubes. After turning them out, so the paisley side shows, I folded in the open end - it was sewn over under the machine. The panel was attached to the outside of the coat, as you can see. The top of the pleat is where the middle of the tube (horiztonally) is. When I attached it with a straight stitch, I went above the top of the pleat and below it. This adds extra reinforcement. Pleats are heavy which means that they tend to rip out easier if not properly reinforced.

(See #18) Using a 4B (very soft) pencil, I marked the inside of yesterday's front flaps that I pinned back. On the left side here, you can see that I've used the marking as a guideline so I could fold the flap towards the inside. I did this up and down both front sides. It took a lot of pins and it was a slow process. Once both were pinned, I put in a straight stitch down the edge.

  9. I'm looking for a boat that's for sale in Nicaragua. I'm willing to spend up to $15000. Must have cabin. Not looking for a fixer-up project boat, though I do expect to work on it before putting out to sea. Fiberglass preferable, but wood acceptable.
  10. I knew there had to be some pirate coffee out there and I found it. http://piratecoffeecompany.com/ http://www.adagio.com/signature_blend/blend.html?blend=21 Adagio Tea sells the 18th Century Pirate Blend Tea. Description: A blend of gunpowder green tea and rum flavored tea that will make you shiver your timbers. What more would a pirate want more then gunpowder and rum!? Yarrr!

The back, which was open for the purposes of a pleat, was folded in half and a rough straight stitch was placed over the edge. This will be covered up, just like the side pleat tops, later on.

I did a rough straight stitch over the side pleats. I measured the front which I had cut big in order to do this and I pinned it back. It will still meet up but it's ready to be fitted.

I've pulled the fabric aside a little bit so you can see the pleat.

I have one pin holding the pleat in place (horizontal - alongside the hand-stitching) since I turned the coat over. The back and the front line up since the pleat is folded under in a watteau pleat.

I went over these pleats with a needle and thread, hand-stitching it real fast before putting it under my machine. This was to eliminate the pins. The fabric was already getting thick, but the pins made it thicker. This helped a whole lot.
