  1. I must admit that I'm a recent convert and I would have once said why ruin a good thing by frying them... that was before I ran into a fried oyster vendor on Queen Street in Hampton, Va. Since then I am a regular at a local seafood eatery... my favorite... fried oyster sandwich with tartar sauce. ;)

According to the skipper on the Priscilla, a historic 1888 L.I. oyster sloop, oysters were once a cheap, nutritional and plentiful food for the immigrant masses. He also tells a story that the ubiquitous cardboard chinese food containers were first invented for shucked oysters take-out.

You could also try to rivet the bottom of the belt loop.

Cut a small hole in the backside of the sheath and the loop. Slide a rivet into the sheath and through the hole you made in the back. Use a piece of steel slid into the sheath as an anvil and set the rivet.

Also what you did with the linen... try it with a piece of leather, similar to a keeper loop on your belt.

  3. Wow, a really smart looker.

The Long Island Maritime Museum has raffled a small hand-built rowing dinghy for the past several years. I haven't won yet... :(

This year they switched to a wood kayak.

BCarp, any info on who crafts this dinghy?

  4. Greg -

Thanks for the photo link. Beautiful area to become a castaway but tough living without equipment and supplies. You've got to wonder who the old Scot was? Kinda made me wonder of George Burns in the movie 'Oh God'. ;)

    On to chapter 8 tonight.

  5. Glad you're enjoying it. I assume you mean it's at 96%, not 96% left? Otherwise you've got your evening's work cut out for you. ;)

    Ozgur

96% read, finished reading it last night. I thought it an enjoyable and entertaining read. Will the same characters be returning in the next addition?

  6. If you read the novel "On Stranger Tides" you discover that Blackbeard planned his death only to return to life in another body.

thanks I just bought it at a dollar store today!

Jake, ye be off on a strange adventure with that book. ;)

  7. Ozgurk's The Wrath of the Brotherhood is down to 96% left on Kindle. I hope to finish it this evening. An interesting read with many interesting characters.

At the Point of a Cutlass has been started as a daytime read as the Kindle washes out in the sunlight.

  8. Welcome aboard missy. All forms of sea creatures are welcome here.

There was a grand photo-op booth at Hampton Blackbeard's Festival that featured mermaids and our own Caribbean Pearl.

Be wary young sailor of wind and high water

the sea has a secret, the sea has a daughter

She'll swim along starboard and capture your heart

with a flick of her tail so soon she'll depart
