  1. This may be my greatest peeve of all! I hate it when I am driving in the left lane, already going 5-10 mph over the speed limit, and someone (usually a male barely into his 20s) comes up from behind me at over 80 mph, flashes his lights, expecting me to either 1: increase my speed to match his, and thereby increasing my culpability in breaking the speed limit) or 2: get into the right lane, so he doesn't have to inconvenience himself by obeying the law and prevailing speed of traffic. I would love to be able to talk to him, to hear his argument for my breaking the law so he can drive the speed he feels like driving

Aye Aye to that one! I had a guy in a corvette pulling to the left to flash his highbeams in my side mirror! What a jerk! Left lane does not mean "however the heck fast I wanna go".

  2. The GAoP is the period between the end of Queen Anne's War (I'm fairly certain, it was one'o'them Dutch wars) and basically the Take-Down of Blackbeard when Spotswood decided to make himself King of the Pirate Killers (and spent about a year convincing the Real King that the Take-Down of Blackbeard by Virginians was totally legal-he actually had no real jurisdiction in Ocracoke or anywhere thereabouts.)

I'm sure you're all aware, but just to re-iterate, the Golden Age of Piracy started with all of England's Caribbean Privateers who were given letters of marque against the Dutch, French, Spanish, etc. because of all the wars over colonies there were dropped when all the wars ended.

Sort of like if WWII ended and nothing was done for the returning GI's. You get a lot of pissed-off professionals.

  3. Nav tools on a ship...Who knew?!

Yeah, when it comes to documented pirate ships, the only thing Whydah's got on the QAR is that they have a big old honkin' bell that says "WHYDAH" on it. Take THAT New England!!

    (oops, I'm sorry. didn't hurt ya , did i???)

  4. As a sailor and history student and enthusiast, I invite you to my party!

I am starting up a "maritime culture" reenactment group focused on the maritime heritage of North Carolina. As the home of Blackbeard's last stand, how can we not have a crewe??!!!!

All my members will be highly encourage to learn to sail (aboard my 22footer) and learn about the maritime activity in the area from 1750-1780. I don't say "pirate" group because the labels around here are kind of flimsy...not all pirates were pirating 24-7, it was more like "seasonal" work. And take a look at Gov. Eden, everything gets flimsy legally around here!

But don't be fooled by the titles...we HAVE FUN!

Our first activities will be to investigate pirate events IE Blackbeard festivals at Beaufort, NC and Hampton Roads, VA, and Charleston Harborfest. We will also be building a boat (not too big, not too small...well, small enough) in hopes of inspiring investors in an even bigger project...more info on asking.

My contacts are sestable@ncsu.edu and phone # (919) 463-7611. We welcome all reenactors and aspiring reenactors from NC and surrounding states (but be assured of the drive from NC...)

Thanks so much and hope to hear from you!

    Betsy
