Aye Aye Here's to the man who's #1 in the #2 buisness. Happy Birthday Mate

There is a very good thread here that deals with pilots and all they're variations. Scroll down its called pilots on ships what did they really do. In general pilots were as JoshuaRed described however there were variations of this almost all of witch are enclosed in its two pages of replies.

Don't tell that too PETA they'll try and sue the desendants of those reponsible for any profits said actions might have generated.

My God she's almost as beautifal as I had imagined (long time fan of the novels) As to her size rember her active service life ( that of her real sister ships that is) was ended with the arrival of american built super frigates So large she could't compete. By god we might not have finesse but the U.S. Navy has always been willing to give a good lesson in the application of mass force hey!

The ships from the golden age of sail and beyond sometimes came with sweeps. (as seen in the P.O.T.C.) but in general were rarely used. Often it was found more effective in a calm to use the boats instead of the sweeps. Also only the navy and pirate ships (presumably) would have enough men to man the sweeps as most merchant vessels carried as small a crew as possible. (Often lacking the man power to fight both sides at ounce.) The great ocean going frigates were however about as big as ships with sweeps could get and most of the ships twoard the end of fighting sail didn't carry them as ship size was just too large for them to be effective. However ships the size of say the Royaliste would have carried them till the end of thier service. (If you like a bit of fictional refrences there are several mentions of sweeps in Patrick O'brien's Audbrey Mautrin series. Praticulary noted for Lucky Jack's distain of them and prefrence for pulling with the boats.)

I can relate to this in a slightly wierder way I have no fear of hieghts when in an airplane or a deer stand but put me on a ladder or the top row of a pair of bleachers and my knees get so weak I find it hard to stand. This leads me to think that its not the heght but the lac of control that gives me the proplems. I'm scared when on a rollercoaster or on a mountain but standing on a roof I framed out or climbing a deer stand I built gives me not a quiver........go figure I chalk it up to just being odd!

My primary way of studing history has to date always been to come to a mean understanding as I have yet to get involved in reinacting(working on it though) I haven't made the detailed study of specific periods that has been done by several others here, however I have come across several more general ideas about medicine from the general time frame and wonder if anone could set about correcting any flaws in them? 1 Medical knowledge in the middle east was at least in terms of infection more advanced than that of the west through out this time frame. 2 The massive number of ambutations performed by surgeons of this time period were not neccasarily due to a lack of knowledge as the wonds recived by a large slow moving ball were much more devistating to bone than today's lighter higher velocity rounds..... my refrence on this is civil war era but the same would concevably hold true for earlier fire arms as they for the most part were very heavy by todays standard and moved at much slower velocities.

1 Talk to Hawkins native of the U.K. and Travel agent ( connections mate connections) 2 As I understand it there be some replicas (full size) of the golden Hind and then of course you wouldn't wanna miss H.M.S. Warrior 3 Get lots of pictures and post em I ain't never been no closer to England than the history channel.
-
But of course me mate. I watched a show on the history channel about the wind Jammers last night and saw something I couldn't belive. The last ship what fought under sail was called the Sea eagler ( think I misspelled it means sea eagle) Damned German count used her as a long range commerce raider in WW I. The Kaiser thought he was insane till he started sinking enemy vessels. Course then 'm pretty sure the first guy to take a merchant ship wilst in a canoe was considered a might daft at first too.

WHY SAILORS ARE SUPERSTIOUS. It is bad luck to set sail on a Friday. This was a much held belive and a reason to raise your premiums until the turn of the century (1899-1900) "In 1894 a scots merchant and ship owner in liverpool became incensed at haveing to compensate his captins and crews for laying over unti l saturday. Nor was he excited by the prospect of paying outrageous premiums to greedy insurance company owners. He decided to explode the old wives' tale once and for all. He ordered a ship built. Her keel was lais on Friday and christened the friday on Friday. A captin was even found whose name was Friday. Then after loading an expensive cargo on board and refuseing to insure it, the Scots merchant waved farewell as the good ship Friday sailed off bound for New York. The good ship Friday and her intrepid crew were never seen or heard from agian." From Clive Cusslers "The Sea Hunters" chapt. 2 So Royaliste you be stayin in port today mate??

I've been looking for a long time to find plans for old style sailing boats in the 12' to 17' range. I love the lines of the boat Captian Jack made his entry on in P.O.C. but I dont know about the square riged sail. Was this a movie adaptation or did small boats of the time use the square rig as opposed to the lateen sail? Would this be harder to learn with as I am just beggining in the art of sail? And most importantly where can I get plans for such a boat? As to the question many of you must be asking (Why is this moron trying to build his FIRST SAIL BOAT? ) Even though it'll propably cost more this way I figure I can peice it out over time instead of makeing the big leap right away and besides how beter to know ones ship than to build it? Looking for all the help I can get and thanks to ye in advance mates

My father used to tell me at one point in his early years you could tell what part of a state someone came from by thier accent.....now it takes a southerner just to tell one southeren states accent from another and to be honest with you I for one am sad to see even that vestage slipping away. I kinda like me rebel accent ya might say.
-
Thanks Hawkyns as always good advice and I am glad to have it.
-
If I may throw something out here I ounce read that accents change very quickly and although I am not sure about this I think I recall refrences to English mirth at the American accent fairly early on in the colonial period. Also hawkyns I think the Carolinas aren't the only place with that praticular accent as most of the deep south is of Scotts Irish ancestry and or African witch brings another question to the fore front what was the accent of a black pirate like?
-
My brother and I load his reproduction colt navy from a powder horn ( or given it's size more of a flask) that has a measure attached (ie a door blocks of the measure from the supply) I havent really given this part of the process as much thought as I should have untill I read this thread do you think we should change from this method and go to a seperate measure?

AHHH a newbie question for ya mates. I'm currently getting me kit together and need it to pull double duty as much as possible. I plan on splitten my time between a Confederate commerce raider and a pirate from the 1700's I need to find some good refrences as to me clothes for both online any ideas mates? I plan on oing for a gunners mate in the confederate side of things and a simmilar rank in piracy proper. If I can I'd like to make few changes in the transition. HELP PLEASE!!!! Thanks in advance.

I live just the other side of the Savanah river Studley and although I haven't got my kit together yet when I do I'd love to hook up sometime.
