First and foremost, The Stranglers song "Golden Brown" is breathtaking. I adored it upon first listen in the early 80's. A true rarity and one of my best discoveries~ the group Dark Orange, their cd entitled "The Garden of Poseidon". Super rare, an import I gave a listen to at a cd shop years ago. I fell in love. I'm not sure how easy this would be for anyone to find, but if you love a combination of romamtic shanties and sea themed tunes, this is a true jewel. It's always my definitive summer sea dreaming cd.

Here's a wonderful collection of folk songs, both ballads and shanties, that were sung by the sailors who worked the Great Lakes during the age of sail. The book includes descriptions of the lives of these sailors (who often also worked as lumberjacks in the winter). The book comes with an accompanying CD of field recordings from the 1930s of elderly sailors singing the songs they remember from their working days in the 19th century: http://wsupress.wayne.edu/glb/gtlakes/waltonwj.htm Cheers, Hester

The Captain's Lady's quiet, but don't let that be decievin', Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe. If you piss her off you'll find out how fast heads go rollin' Way haul away, we'll haul away Joe. Ok, I've been wondering where a good place to find some sea shanty guitar tabs would be? Powertab ones would be great, but regular ones would work well too.

We shouldn't be surprised...with the popularity of the first moive...several well known Rockers such as BONO, STING and NICK CAVE are among the stars who have reworked classic pirate tunes and sea chanteys for a new album inspired by JOHNNY DEPP's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies. The big names join BRYAN FERRY, JARVIS COCKER, ANDREA CORR, RUFUS WAINWRIGHT and CHICAGO star JOHN C REILLY on upcoming double album ROGUES GALLERY: PIRATE BALLADS, SEA SONGS + CHANTEYS (corr). The 43-song album was the brainchild of Pirates of The Carribean director GORE VERBINSKI. He says, "I slowly became fascinated by the idea of a contemporary reinterpretation of the sea chantey. "I imagi…

During the summer me and buddy of mine recorded a song about Pyrates', it's not a sea shanty or metal song but more of a Caribbean groove with character's(Pirate voices) we created for a more comical adventure. This is in the works to be re-mixed and mastered. The first minute of this is our band of Notorious Seadawgs' trying to bury th'er treasure before the music kicks in, So ye bin warned. Would like yer opinions mates' Hope ye enjoy! http://www.guitaristworks.com/forum/files/..._final3_927.mp3

I beg the forgiveness of the group for this intrusion. If anybody is offended by free offers of swag, please don't read the rest of this message. I have been authorized by Dave Grossman, the author of The Two-Space War, to generate some cross-genre interest in his book. We want to mail a signed (first printing, first edition, hardback) copy of the book to a member of this board who might be interested. The idea is for you to then post a review for the board, if you find it readable. If you don't, you can always post a "yecch, don't read that trash" message here. No strings attached. No obligation. Hark when the night is falling Hear! hear the pipes are calling, Loudly and proudly calling, Down thro' the glen. There where the hills are sleeping, Now feel the blood a-leaping, High as the spirits of the old Highland men. Towering in gallant fame, Scotland my mountain hame, High may your proud standards gloriously wave, Land of my high endeavour, Land of the shining river, Land of my heart for ever, Scotland the brave. High in the misty mountains, Out by the purple highlands, Brave are the hearts that beat Beneath Scottish skies. Wild are the winds to meet you, Staunch are the friends that greet you, Kind as the love that shines from fair maiden's e…

From what I have been able to research, there are lots of songs circa 1700 or so that are ABOUT pirates, but precious few tunes that may have logically been sung BY pirates. My thoughts: Whaling songs and shanties are out. Possibly some few broadside ballads may have trickled aboard. For those British ships and men that went on account, possibly some songs popular in Royal Navy may have been sung, though it's hard to imagine men who are now wanted for piracy singing songs about hearts of oak and british tars. Any comments on the above or better yet a lubber line in the right direction from the august body of knowledgeable folk here?

These be lyrics fer me as-yet-unnamed pirate metal band. The song be about a man who is being hunted by a female pirate who only loves the sea, but has other...needs, and prays upon seamen an' then kills 'em later t'prevent complications. Here goes: "Gramercy fer the drink For it may be me last I'm on the wrong side o' an iron-hearted lass Now let me tell ye somethin' An' I ain't inclined t'lies It ain't worth yer life For a night between her thighs Queen of Deception Mistress of Strife She'll love ye all night An' then she'll gut ye wit' her knife Queen of Deception Mistress of Strife She'll love ye all night An' then she'll gut ye wit' her knife She's…
