Avast there shipmates, Be there any of ye swabs out there what as knows all of the words to "Farewell and adiu to you fair Spanish Ladies". Cos Oi knows the tune and the first line, and it's been running around in me'ead for days, an it's driving me nuts as Oi dont know the rest of the words. Arrgh!

Contuary to popular beliefes. The ditty "Sing a song of sixpence" was actualy a coded message used to recruit pirates fer black beards crew. Here be the lyrics an thier meanings. I was in Colonial Williamsburg, VA a few weeks back for work and during my afternoon off I stummbled upon a used bookstore called "Mermaid Books" in the basement of one of the shops there. There were just stacks of old books and I came across this perfect collection! Salt Water Poems and Ballads by John Masefield and illustrated by Chas Pears published in 1916. Great condition! One o' me mates at work be wonderin' if there be any rowin' songs out there...He says that he knows plenty of "rope hauling" songs...but was wonderin' if there be songs of the rowing variety...or if there even is a difference. I was thinking about pyratical love songs, and t'be honest, I couldn't think of many. The only one that really comes to mind is The Water Is Wide, especially the James Taylor version. Of course, Mari Mac is also pyratical, and I *guess* it could be considered a love song... Any thoughts?

Ahoy pirates... Me mates and meself down here in Santa Fe are starting a sea song group. We plan t' sing fer fun and money, mainly going to the Plaza and singing for tips. Only problem is, Santa Fe is hundreds and hundreds of miles from any major body of water. So I'm trying to think of a really good name for the group that is piratey and deserty all at the same time. (We're thinking of having a sign next to the tip jar that says "help these poor landlocked pirates get home to a ship...") Any ideas?

Just a wee reminder of the NW Folklife Festival, held in Seattle each Memorial Day weekend, the largest FREE folk festival in the world. There's plenty of sea music all weekend, and parties to go with it, but the best chance to hear a lot o' music in one place will be the sea chantey concert. It'll be Saturday, May 29,from 2:00 to 6:00, and will include such greats as "Pint and Dale", "The Cutters", "Constellation's Crew", "Broadside" and "Shanghaied on the Willamette", to name but a few. Not really looking for shanties as such, just lively, upbeat piratey type stuff that you could dance to (If you'd drunk enough bumbo, which I'll also be having, since finding out it's an authentic pirate drink.
