So here's a little reproduction map that I've been working on for a couple of days. Certainly not the nicest one I've drawn but all in all I think it turned out well. It's 16"x21" on laid paper. The map is completey hand plotted, drawn, and inked with one of the main ou of period details being that I used pens with waterfast ink to prevent smudging should the map get wet. Comments and Crtisicm are welcome. It's been awhile. We're looking to start a sixth round of Pyrate Trading Cards. "Wot's that?" you call from atop the mainmast. A small simple sharing of artistic endeavors. And by small, we mean 'business card' size. Info: More info: Examples:

Many members of the Pub also make some kind of jewelry. Whether to sell or just for fun. I thought a place where we could trade tips, share works in progress, ask for help, or just hang around and talk jewelry would be nice. Posting pictures, either of your work, your workplace, or of what inspires you, is highly recommended! THIS IS NOT A PLACE TO SELL YOUR WARES! So, sit back, sip your coffee, and lets share our lust...er, love...of jewelry.

This is a custom made King George the Second Letter of Marque I have just finished making for one of the bretheren. It is 18"x25" like many of the original ones and has the strip of seals at the bottom like like original documents of the era too. It was researched as much as I could from actual letters or marque, royal charters and indentures to make it as authentic as possible. It is witnessed by William Pitt who was secretary of state in 1758 and George Anson who was Lord Admiral of the admiralty at this time too. All the signatures are actual reproductions of surviving examples. It is printed on a heavyweight parchment vellum which feels and looks as close to an…

Greetings, pirate arteests one and all! I'm currently putting together a second anthology of poetry, short stories, and artwork. This year's work will include both pirate-themed and scifi/fantasy-themed pieces. Last year's books has sold almost 200 copies and while we aren't getting rich it has been extremely rewarding, in so many other ways, to have my work in publication. For instance, Raising Black Flags, last year's book, will be featured at a book signing at the Texas Renaissance Faire's Pirate Adventure weekend! Four of the other poets and I will get to sit behind a table and sign autographs and sell copies of the book to that portion of the 50,000 people who w…

Started sketching and drawing again, when I was cleaning out the workshop I found an old atlas from the 30's. I used a combo of 2 old printouts of the Caribbean and the map of Cuba in the atlas to make this. It is on heavy paper and I used India ink on the old nib tip pens to ink it..... Bad pic, I had to use the phone... OK, got the camera to work:

Now that I have finally finished the "art room" in my house I have started painting again. Been a while but was glad to know that after 2 hours of practicing I haven't lost all my skill. Would like to work on some portraits for a while so if anyone has a favorite pic they want to send me I would love to paint a few of the pub members. No charge if you like the way it turns out and want me to send it to you. You can e-mail me the pics at csuttle3@gmail.com

I'm not starting a new journal round...been there, done that. This is a website that is offering a sketchbook/art journal challenge to about two-dozen artists, who will post pictures of their work, give tutorials, and talk about what supplies they used. The fun part is, they have asked anyone who wants to follow along with their own journals, to participate...in a non-official way. Here is the lowdown. Challenge For those of you who have blog sites, or web sites, here is a chance to post links to them, show off your work/writing, and get some traffic. There is one theme posted each month. Not too intimidating. You create a journal page/pages using that theme, post the…

Does any know what some of the old "pirate" maps would look like? What paper would they be? On how big it would measure or would it be more like a manuscript? Would it be in color or black and white?

The guidelines as quoted from Ransom back in the first or second round... This time we will be aiming for a (to borrow from Sailor Jerry) "Stewed, Screwed and Tattooed" theme. Symbols of the harder side of living either at sea or ashore. Anything having to do with drink, tattooing or piercings. While tattoos may still be up for discussion as to being period correct( Tattoo thread ), this is strictly for fun. Think tankards, rum bottles, taverns signs, tattoo designs, small beer, large beer, etc. Please aim to have your cards ready and sent to me no later than July 1st. so I can sort them and send them back at close to the end of July (some may bleed over to the fir…

Hopefully to begin August 1. What you need: Art book; usually 9" by 6" Ability to spend $5-$10 monthly to mail the journal to the next artist on the pub Live within the contiguous United States A commitment to see the project to the end The guidelines of the sketchbook rounds: 12 artists max. Books passed on the 1st of each month, gives each artist at least four weeks to do two to three pages. Keep the books fairly small - such as the easily available black, 9" x 6" ring-bound artists sketch books Any art work style/medium is fine. This is not "fine art" nor is it meant to be "period". It is a fun project with a pirate theme. Materials, as I said, can be a…

I've looked everywhere in the hopes of finding pictures I could use to put together my own pirate flag, but to no avail. I can't even provide good sample pictures for what I would like put together, with the exception of the well known crossed swords. So I'll try to describe it as best as I can. Basically I want the flag to have a wolf head centered, skull or not a skull, in the center of the flag just like on a generic Jolly Roger(skull and crossed bones). To the sides of the wolf's head would be two wings, preferably bat-like, kind of like Avenged Sevenfold's logo, but if the wolf's head is drawn as a skull it might look a bit more cool to have the wings be bone wing…

Okay, it's been over a week since I sent out the cards, so I'm going to go on the assumption that all the cards have reached home ports safe and sound. So, time to post some pictures, so everyone can see how much fun we had. Also, post a brief description of how you made them, in case anyone wants to play in the future. Here's what my dinning room table looked like the day I divided up the cards and goody bags, and had the mailing envelopes ready to go. Now, let's see some cards, guys!

The guidelines as quoted from Ransom back in the first or second round... This time we will be aiming for a "Lost" theme, or "Lost because of x weather" for the more ambitious. Please aim to have your cards ready and sent to me no later than March 26th so I can sort them and send them back at close to the end of March (some may bleed over to the first few days of April because of the sometimes slow postal service). So far we have the below list of volunteers (or voluntold in one case  ) I'll be cat-herding, I mean organizing this round by popular vote (which means no one else wanted to ) 1. Ahoy Mates!!! A bit ago I was contacted by a Pirate who's level of Spooky rivals that of my own t' create a leathern pirate hat that'd befit such a magnificent creature of the nyght... After many a fortnyght of consultin' and consortin' with th' darkest of powers "NyghtWing" was brought forth t' this here material plane through my hands... A menacing Vampire Bat looms from it's bow an' fixes it's dark gaze upon ye' with faceted black Swarovski crystal eyes... A suitably dark companion t' my own Skull Hat of Spooky Doom t' be sure... It has flown from here t' it's rightful owner, Batavia Bellamorte... An' upon her head may it bring a chill t' the winds an' darken th' …

I got a beautiful Williamsburg pewter tankard at a thrift store today. It is engraved on both sides. Has anyone ever tried to remove engraving before? When I look close, it looks like a bit of the metal has been pushed up and out at the edges of the engraved letters, so I'm wondering if it may be possible to somehow chase some of that metal back into the grooves. Barring that, is it possible to simply buff out the engraving? How about filling it in with silver solder or the like? I only paid $1.69 for it, far far below it's retail price, so I'd like to try to salvage it if at all possible.
